the special levels are good, the atmosphere is good, but I don't like the gimmicks, and would have preferred more traditional mario upgrades like the fire flower, star, big mushroom, etc. or even mario 64 upgrade hats.
Banjo Kazooie will never be good. It will be forgotten in twenty years while people jerk off to Sunshine. Seethe. Yooka Yaylee is what the OG Banjo Kazooie team went on to make.
26 years later and it's still not forgotten. Banjo is on Switch Online, got added to a game that sold 32 million units, and has upcoming romhacks like Nostalgia 64.
Are you talking about Smash Bros? No one bought the game for banjo and Kazooie. Rare replay sold like shit, Nuts and Bolts sold like shit. They only added them as DLC because DLC inherently targets a devoted minority
of all the 3D Mario games ever made, Sunshine is the only one where basically every level of the game has the exact same look and aesthetic. It's a very strange thing. In addition to that, while fludd can be a cool movement gimmick at certain times, it feels terrible in other places like combat during bosses. It's still better than most games, but it's probably the worst 3D Mario
I'd argue the limitation of the entire game focusing on a tropical resort forced Nintendo to be more creative with the levels than last Mario games which basically limited themselves to
-grass
-sky
-snow
-lava
-haunted house
-dessart
Sunshine has
- lush environment with lake and hill as well as village (something to show off the power of the GameCube by having far more in one level)
-Ancient mountains
-theme park
-tree village
- haunted hotel
There's only one level that's a basic beach and it has more creative ideas than most of 64
It's probably nostalgia. I used to rank it higher than sunshine as well but after actually replaying both the base game and ds version I realize it just hasn't aged that well. Very shallow game.
Best part of it is the bossfights and boss levels. Something the DS adds up on.
64 is fun if you have OCD. I completed and it wasn't worth it. Completing something like Super Mario World or Galaxy 2 is far better because there's actually a significant reward.
Sunshine really doesn't do all that much worse than 64. At most imo they should've saved the special vacation outfit Mario has as the final reward.
Because it's good, but it's different.
Super Mario Sunshine is a really weird sequel to go directly from Super Mario 64: all of the flood mechanics, the very specifically vacation and Isle Delfino setting, I guess in some capacity the Bowser Jr plot, all that kind of thing. But then that was a reoccurring theme with the Gamecube: Luigi's Mansion, Wind Waker, Nintendo just kept releasing all these games that weren't bad, but they weren't what the 'fans' thought they wanted and they still complain endlessly about it.
Not that the fans were entirely wrong; the mechanics, setting, and content, established in the N64 games were just so fricking strong I'm sure it was quite a whiplash to go from finally seeing the mushroom kingdom, or Hyrule, in 3D to now you're running around spraying water on an airport strip or whatever.
Granted, I fricking love all those games, so that's me. I didn't grow up with Mario 64, nor Ocarina of Time; my first Nintendo games were literally Pikmin, Luigi's Mansion, and Super Mario Sunshine, so the cultural clash is somewhat lost on me.
Because it’s not finished. And because the game didn’t beat players over the head with how busted the spin jump was so most people walked out thinking you had to use FLUDD to get anything done compared to long jumping everywhere in 64.
>Ranking Galaxy 2 over Galaxy
Maybe you have an argument gameplay-wise, but Galaxy had the better aesthetic overall and I would argue it has some of the greatest visuals of any 3D Mario game to date. Every time I go back and play it I have to remind myself that it is running on hardware that is essentially an overclocked GameCube with more RAM, it's simply just that dazzling to me.
It’s a severely flawed game held up entirely by its atmosphere and nostalgia. It’s still better than most games. It’s just the worst 3D Mario. Odyssey is right there with it.
No, I'd argue the levels themselves tend to be interesting and fun despite jank and poor execution.
- The bossfights are more dynamic and engaging than 64
- there's a lot of interesting and memorable levels such as the one where you have to maneuver around the goop covered village without flood, or the one where an entire hotel acts as a puzzle and you have to figure out how to hatch Yoshi and get into the swimming pool, or even the one where you push watermelons down the beach avoiding birds.
Inb4 moronic homosexuals show up blabbing about how Super Mario Galaxy is actually the worst game because "you have less control over Mario" and Odyssey and 64 are best.
Cubies who grew up with the game and had nothing better to play love it, while people that did not grow up playing it have actual standards and recognize it as the worst 3D Mario game.
1/5 of the game's shines are from random blue coins in addition to the 100 coin/red coin missions that 64 had. Sunshine was rushed just like most of the GameCube's library.
Because the game has really high highs, and very low lows. The people who love it can forgive the lows, and the people who don't love it can't
Completion is not required. There's a ton of original content outside of blue coins.
Also you exposed how disengenous you are. Odyssey is far worse completionist wise and way worse at spamming hard to find collectables and copy and paste missions. Sunshines main walkthrough at least consists of original content
Event based gameplay? The game is still built around events occuring both in the hub world and in levels. I do think it's sad they removed the bosses from the Delfino plaza however
mario would do piantas favors to earn sol coins response to pollution and other natural occurrences. the only thing that comes close is flooded dolphino, and that goes away once you enter corona mountain, exit or beat the game
Do it from a standstill, not while moving. My point is, no one gives a shit about how the animations transition smoothly from one to another, that's for normalgay sports games and AAA goyslop. I want a game that is fun to play
Because it’s boring. It’s just not fun to play. Mario’s movement is hampered by his water jetpack, not enhanced by it. That is why the special stages are the most fun to play, even if they forgot to add a long jump.
Galaxy 2 doesn't have as many memorable levels as Galaxy 1. There's too many quick galaxies that are easily forgotten within seconds of finishing their one off puzzle or gimmick.
Galaxy 1 does a better job of evolving the formula 3D Mario created by taking its time to explore galaxies and tell stories within them similar to how sunshine did so with the different portions of the island, or 64 with Bob Omb Battlefield. This makes levels far more engaging, interesting and memorable.
>memorable
Stupid reddit homosexual. The game is an actual fricking Mario game and not a walking simulator like Galaxy and 64. People like you should be put into reeducation camps.
Super Mario Bros 3 didn't just throw players in one random radically different environment after the other. It took its time to explore worlds and the unique mechanics they offered.
Dessert
Water
Pipe world
Clouds
Huge island
Don't forget that it also told stories with the environments. A good example of this being the snow fortress having a tower that leads up into the clouds. Or in the case of Super Mario World the woods maze being solved by a level solution.
Mario has always focused on exploring different environments and telling stories through them. This isn't unique to 3D Mario and the only Mario games to not follow this trend are Galaxy 2, 3D Land and 3D world
- boss fights
- certain secret levels
- best missions in 3D Mario outside of Galaxy. Basically any mission in Serena. beach, the theme park, (outside of the one with the buggy camera) or the tree village.
>best missions in 3D Mario outside of Galaxy
There are no good Galaxy missions. Every single Purple Coin challenge in Galaxy 2 makes Galaxy look like amateur hour. And it introduces them in the first hour of the fricking game.
Again, anyone who thinks Galaxy is better than Galaxy 2 either never played Galaxy 2, or is a fricking moron.
Collecting things isn't fun. Galaxy and Sunshine allow you to do more than mindlessly collect things. In both the collecting is usually withheld to filler missions or completion which is appreciated.
If I wanted to play Banjo Kazooie I'd get a lobotomy first so I could enjoy it and then I'd play Banjo fricking Kazooie.

You can't refute my argument. Mario always focused on missions over collecting things. Banjo Kazooie made these missions significantly easier and more mindless and put the focus on collecting things. Other 3D platformers followed suite with Banjo as it was easier to do than developing unique individual missions.
Mario Sunshine returned with a focus on missions instead of following what everyone else was doing. People got upset at it for doing so.

Sunshine has a game structure problem. While there’s duds for different players in every 3D Mario’s level and mission catalog, normal completion in sunshine requires doing every shadow Mario. The final boss level and fight are shit in sunshine too.
None of you have played Sunshine. You watch YouTube essays and assume you know everything about it because they choose to hyperfixate on the Pachinco machine and random glitches you'll almost never encounter.
Also be aware the switch version is broken and has more glitches
>smooth and precise controls
I couldn't agree more, very smooth as the edges of every platform vacuums Mario to his death if the slightest tip of his boot doesn't land perfectly in the center.
No, I've played the original on GameCube and switch is far glitcher. This is a fact. Super Mario 3D All Stars uses an unpatched unfinished version of Sunshine which is why you could originally see development blocks before they dropped new patches. Basically Silent Hill situation where Nintendo didn't preserve the original finished game and instead preserved an earlier and buggier build. https://youtu.be/lXhOlaJjQ9I?si=bUFD24ZI2ImgLWxA
>smooth and precise controls
I couldn't agree more, very smooth as the edges of every platform vacuums Mario to his death if the slightest tip of his boot doesn't land perfectly in the center.
I really liked those parts of the game where they took away FLUDD and made you jump across blocks in space. It would be nice if they made another Mario game centered entirely around that mechanic.
Sunshine still feels like they put the most effort into giving missions a "story" moreso than any other 3D mario, which makes missions like the village inferno or beach turtles really memorable.
Yeah because they literally went movie mode and made everyone speak in cutscences. Every single one of you advocates needs to be killed. With extreme violence.
>hmmm let's have players collect these key items >how many should we require to get to the final boss? >you know what, frick it, let's require every player beat shadow mario instead
They honestly should have just mandated all 8 main shines on every level, at least then it'd make sense
1. Movement with FLUDD just isn't as fun as regular Mario movement. There's a lot of stopping to spray shit or hover into place or charge up the jet nozzle that is counter to the constant forward movement you expect from Mario.
2. Aesthetics in the levels are too samey
It isn’t, it is bad. The people who “like” it were 7 when they played it. Would be no different from me liking the first TMNT side scroller. However, zoomers are incapable of critical thinking and tempering their bias. They can’t rightfully call this game shit and then say they like it despite knowing they shouldn’t. They would rather try and revise history. Tell a zoomer to wipe their ass and they will just mock you for touching your own booty hole. Suggest a bidet instead and they will mock your use of a water gun to clean yourself. Nothing can be said to make the zoomer take steps to not reek of shit and leave crusty doodoo flakes wherever they walk/set.
The truth is that tendies actually like brainless easy games like Super Mario Odyssey. They have been seething about blue coins because it actually ruined their childhood
Blue coins aren't necessarily the worst by themselves, but wish there was better tracking of which you have collected and which you haven't. I think that's the main issue some players have with them.
Because you have to complete episode 7 in every level to beat the game. As a result, Shrine Sprites are quite literally useless to collect, which trickles down to coins and blue coins being useless to collect. The goal is beat the episode as fast as possible and then move onto the next one. Exploring isn't rewarded. Exploring is utterly useless. When I was a kid I had no idea about having to beat episode 7, I just thought you had to collect a shit ton of sprites to trigger the Volcano. Then I found out and it tainted the game for me. Sometimes ignorance is bliss
the special levels are good, the atmosphere is good, but I don't like the gimmicks, and would have preferred more traditional mario upgrades like the fire flower, star, big mushroom, etc. or even mario 64 upgrade hats.
Because terminally online morons want every 3D platformer to play like Banjo Kazooie and they sperg out when it doesn't.

it is not fair
Event based gameplay? The game is still built around events occuring both in the hub world and in levels. I do think it's sad they removed the bosses from the Delfino plaza however
mario would do piantas favors to earn sol coins response to pollution and other natural occurrences. the only thing that comes close is flooded dolphino, and that goes away once you enter corona mountain, exit or beat the game
Mario can still do them favors to earn blue coins. Try the fruit mini game.
that means they repurposed what they had into padding. what it should have done is give the island's currency for doing those chores
Seems like a useless mechanic. Maybe originally they'd integrate costumes as a reward for the currency?
Because the truth becomes blatantly clear once you get into a special level that takes away your FLUDD, Mario just controls worse than Mario 64
I don't think he controls worse. The game is just much harder than 64 which I appreciate. It brings Mario back to his roots
That last sentence is absolutely untrue and nonsensical
How? At its core the special stages are pure Mario. Platforming centered challenges that introduce different mechanics and gimmicks.
Surprisingly enough does a far better of translating 2D Mario to 3D than something like 3D Land or the walking sim that is 3D World.
Mario 64 has less responsive controls though. Try a side flip in both. Or a spin jump
64 doesn't have the spin jump.
The side flip feels uncanny in Sunshine, as Mario simply snaps into position and performs the jump. It’s all done automatically.
Turning around feels uncanny in 64, as Mario simply snaps into position and turns 180 degrees. It's all done automatically.
That’s not true, you didn’t play the game.
Do it from a standstill, not while moving. My point is, no one gives a shit about how the animations transition smoothly from one to another, that's for normalgay sports games and AAA goyslop. I want a game that is fun to play

super mario sunshine but fully complete and with no filler (like 64 and galaxy are) would have been the best 3D mario hands down.
Sunshine still feels like they put the most effort into giving missions a "story" moreso than any other 3D mario, which makes missions like the village inferno or beach turtles really memorable.
Agreed.
Yeah because they literally went movie mode and made everyone speak in cutscences. Every single one of you advocates needs to be killed. With extreme violence.
You've never played the game and you have no idea what he's talking about. Go shut up and jerk off to Banjo Kazooie autist
I've 100%ed every Mario and you're wrong.
Even super Luigi galaxy?
I couldn't bother with that.
Is that Galaxy with all green stars?
no it's galaxy but more slippery
>slippery
That sounds gay, bro.
Autism
israelite.
Is that blood on top? Fricking GC era was a bit unhinged it seems... You would never see that in a Mario game noeadays (these days).
Blue Coins autism
Boomers couldn't appreciate kino because it wasn't exactly the same as MUH 64
>hmmm let's have players collect these key items
>how many should we require to get to the final boss?
>you know what, frick it, let's require every player beat shadow mario instead
They honestly should have just mandated all 8 main shines on every level, at least then it'd make sense
It just needed to be SM64-2, the water cannon gimmick was not needed
Literally every anti sunshine argument itt boils down to 'it wasn't Mario 64'.
The israelites murdered JFK, bombed the USS Liberty and bombed the Twin Towers.
1. Movement with FLUDD just isn't as fun as regular Mario movement. There's a lot of stopping to spray shit or hover into place or charge up the jet nozzle that is counter to the constant forward movement you expect from Mario.
2. Aesthetics in the levels are too samey
It also doesn't help that you have to constantly recollect the fricking nozzles in every single level you visit.
Take your meds.
The truth is that tendies actually like brainless easy games like Super Mario Odyssey. They have been seething about blue coins because it actually ruined their childhood
Blue coins aren't necessarily the worst by themselves, but wish there was better tracking of which you have collected and which you haven't. I think that's the main issue some players have with them.
>le skill issue
what is it with nintendo and getting the most fundamental mechanics wrong
The Nintendo Difference™
Because you have to complete episode 7 in every level to beat the game. As a result, Shrine Sprites are quite literally useless to collect, which trickles down to coins and blue coins being useless to collect. The goal is beat the episode as fast as possible and then move onto the next one. Exploring isn't rewarded. Exploring is utterly useless. When I was a kid I had no idea about having to beat episode 7, I just thought you had to collect a shit ton of sprites to trigger the Volcano. Then I found out and it tainted the game for me. Sometimes ignorance is bliss
It's an adventure game, with 3d platforming elements.
>Game has very noticeable glitches and bugs
>It's still one of the best Mario games ever made
