Most of them didn't learn bug moves that actually inflicted damage. Only beedrill who happened to be part poison. It's possible you could make the argument that since bugs are so insignificant that the Psychics simply would be ignorant of them and hence why they can one up the Psychic type.

Gen 1 psychic was OP as frick. However they fricked it up when they tried to balance it later on.
Psychic should be be combination of wizard magic, super intelligence, and sci fi mental abilities.
They should destroy fighting, mind over matter, and likewise resist the most "physical" smashing and bashing types, mainly fighting, steel, rock.
They should have no problem with the darkness, or ghosts or bugs.
