Its been awhile for a long time, but it was just a handful of weirdo freak pedo's who did it back in my day and it was all done in secret. RPing is now normalized with zoomers and its full on millions of them and they even stream it.
This is similar to how back in my day anime was for freak weirdo losers and now its gone mainstream "le nerd culture"

back when I was like 10-13 me and my friends were basically just as into roleplay on SAMP

People used to roleplay all the time on the old internet, it was one of the main ways to exercise your imagination when text-based MUDs were considered cutting edge. I remember doing an Aes Sedai roleplay from Wheel of Time where you had to roleplay as a female because there are no male Aes Sedai. I’m trans btw
Pretty confident even Friendlies are RPing. Oldest form of RP I can recall to is either HellMOO or SS13. It's somewhat cringe or passe now that newbies can just use voice chat instead of chatting or /me actions.

If you've played on "roleplaying" game these days like in GTA online or gmod, you know these people don't actually roleplay, but treat it as a competitive game instead
