can someone explain the Bridget lore to me and why trans folx still champion Bridget as a good trans rep?
i only have tertiary knowledge and played a couple of the GG games, not all of them.
so Bridget was born in a village that had the superstition that twins of the same sex was bad luck, so he was forced to dress up and live as a girl with a girls name.
i played some version of GGX2 that had Bridget in it. i do remember that in his dialogue, he would repeatedly correct people that he was a boy, like he was annoyed they were calling him a girl. so despite looking how he did, he was still annoyed at being viewed as a girl.
and now in Strive, Bridget decides he is happy to be a girl and live that way. so effectively - he was forced to live as a girl by his parents because of a village boogeyman - he hated being a girl for several years if not his entire upbringing - and now recently accepts it.
i can understand the people who view Bridget as not being trans, or groomed into being trans by his parents, or at the very least, just not a very good trans role model because of his backstory.
so why do trans/ally people on twitter still insist that its not a creepy, bad image for a trans character? i still see some of those people try to refute that his backstory doesn't matter or something because Bridget accepts he's a girl now and thats all that matters so that makes it all ok and valid 🙂

Daisuke I think really let down long term fans there. He designed it as "what if a cute boy, instead of a cute girl", so any sort of "trans was always the plan" bullshit doesn't hold up. He was always "he" pronouns despite having myriad gear parts, but I would accept "them" if it wasn't such an ideological thing vs the more accurate element of gender being the last thing on his mind (though he did become more human thanks to his surrogate father figure in Kliff ). Rather, it was all vague implications about living as your true self and Ky's struggle with being a Gear and being accepted etc. So of course some people took other stuff away from it - such as it being a discussion of what it means to be a man, that Bridget could for instance still be a guy but if he was used to/comfortablein his crossdressing habit then fine he could just do that etc. So this went back and forth a long time and this is where I blame the devs - they could have come out and settled it early, but they let it be controversy marketing and making other excuses for ambiguous writing, deciding finally "we rather have online trannies FOR our game rather than calling us horrid transphobes"
