The DVD player shit is such a zoomer cope, I don't know anyone that bought it as a DVD player, actually I've met people who didn't even know it could play DVDs.
It sold well because Sony had the best dev support, which attracted lots of third parties, and PS1 was the winner of the gen before. That's all. The rest just made it even more successful.

so we have reached the point where zoomers who werent alive during that generation have rewritten history so that the PS2 now is a trash console without any games

the n64/ps1 schism caused a lot of third party devs to leave nintendo - as a result the PS2 ended up having way more third party titles than the cube

95% of the time this just meant it had more shovelware, but it also ended up having some of what would become the biggest hits of the 2000s for normies - GTA, shooters, and licensed sports games

for comparison imagine if games like fortnite and apex legends were exclusives in 2018 - whatever console had them would certainly have won

        Anonymous

I can't believe people are still parroting this lame line of, the PS2 only won the console generation because it was a “cheap DVD player”. New flash, DVD players were already pretty cheap at the start of the 2000’s and only got cheaper as the years went on. You don't sell 155 million units of a console, because of an included DVD player (that the Xbox had no less). It has always been, and always will be because of the games. Stop rewriting history to fit your narrative.

It's still an amazing price for an GameCube. If I would of saw that at Walmart back then, I would of bought it. It doesn't change the fact Nintendo was desperately trying to sell units.

It flopped because Nintendo was moronic, it didn't lack quality of games. It's one of Nintendo's best platforms. Focusing on sales as a sole indicator of quality is one of the worst things you can do for yourself. Whether it be individual games or consoles.

I was underrated. Not perfect, the small disc size and lack of online connectivity was short sighted, but the games, even by today's standards, were really good. On top of that, the system was very portable. small size, has a handle, easy to set up. You could even use the gameboy player to play gameboy games on the big screen. It was the perfect system to bring to sleepovers/parties for millenials at the time.

I agree but the Wii port was June 2007. If you wanted RE4 in 2005 it would be worth a GCN on its own.

Every time RE4 gets a port, something new is broken

GC –> Wii — Lower polygon count inventory items from PS2 port

GC –> Wii –> Xbox 360 — Broken and missing effects, bad mapping conversion for ALL the models of the game, missing sound reverb effect.

GC –> Wii –> Xbox 360 –> UHD — Animation and sound issues, black pickup screen, bad optimization with lots of performance issues in some computers

The PS4 version is just copy-paste of the “HD textures option” from PC Ultimate HD. Only a few extra character textures were improved for PS4/Xone.

Also some enemies behavior issues if I’m not mistaken. But I’m not sure in which port…

Still aside of resolution the GC/Wii and UHD with HD Project are the best versions. It has the best color palette and lightning and have bloom to the fire effects.

Resident Evil 4 HD Project removes terrible looking PS2 version assets.

          https://www.re4hd.com/?p=5281

          >WEAPONS and other item MODELS: The models used for all post-Gamecube versions have less polygons than the original Gamecube version. It seems they kept (perhaps by accident?) the low-poly versions from the PS2 port of the game. I restored and even improved all of these models. There is a limitation with these models that crashes the game if the file size of certain files are larger than the original, but I found that there is some dispensable data that can be removed from the .bin files (the 3D models), and even entire .bin files that are unused in-game

well part of that was because the ps2's architecture was as fricked-up and nightmarish to develop for as the ps3's, the vaunted "emotion engine" was basically pasted together with a toilet paper roll and vomit
