Why is this considered an RPG if there's no character creation and only varying degrees of a combat build? Do morons really think an open-world and skill tree equals an RPG?

Not my problem, sounds like you got filtered by the greatest video game of all time. Someone post that Witcher rollin image again, I need to roll for my wife yenn this time.
Because it has choices and consequences but like geralt always has the same personality regardless
it's just a marketing term for consumers like so they know it has cut scenes where you can select from one of two options that decides what the next cut scene will be and that's all. some people are really into that
quest design
Not this type of thread again.
RPGs do not require character creation, moron. By your logic FF7 is not a RPG.
Correct, ff7 is a jrpg
a Japanese RPG.
And the Japanese have their own unique take at the genre
have a nice day. Right now.
The J in JRPG stands for joke, as in Joke of an RPG
Dragon Quest Monsters Joker?
Yes. And Japanese RPGs are not real RPGs.
RPG = role playing game
you're role playing as geralt of rivia
nobody called half-life an rpg even though you're role-playing as gordon freeman
Mass effect is a pretty similar game and it's no coincidence, the first Witcher was originally a hastily modded infinity engine game which was created by bioware. CDPR basically tried to make a medieval bioware game with the witcher series, the problem is CDPR has no idea what makes a game an RPG. Since CDPR is Polish they have nothing but second hand experiences with western RPGs, this is very similar to how basically all japanese games, including JRPGs are hastily reverse engineered western games without understanding what made them an RPG. This is why CDPR claims the game is an RPG and not an action game, well that's only half true, the other half is for marketing purposes.
The Witcher III has:
>Choices and Consequences
>Romance Options
>Dialogue Choices
>Different Builds
>Editable Armor/Weapons/Potions/Foods - i.e Inventory Management
What else do you need? It's a RPG in every sense of the word. Meds, now, contrarian.
The entire point of a western RPG is it plays as if you're getting guided by a DM, not a ride to next cutscene simulator
No, that's your idea of a RPG. Computer RPGs are not Tabletop RPGs.
again

Again

Based low IQ moron, have fun baiting I guess
I accept your concession that at the core of the RPG is a simulated guided DM experience at home by yourself and that riding your horse through an empty open world to get to the next cutscene is not an RPG
this must be the weirdest headcanon with regards to what defines a genre ive ever seen
How so? it's apparent to anybody that actually knows what they're talking about that the quintessential goal of all RPGs was to create a virtual experience to take place of the imagined one during tabletop sessions, meaning the DM, or the game designer, should play an active role is responding to the player's choices
Is Bastion an RPG then?
Yes because you play the role of bastion
>is some shitty no name indie game an RPG
never heard of it
simulator
>Witcher 3 is over 120 hours long
>Games has 13 hours of cutscenes in side
>This means 87,5% of the game are gameplay
>12,5 % are cutscenes in ingame graphics where you still havve decisions to take
I hate people who didnt play a game yet shit on it for no appearent reason
OH NO NONONONO false narrative bros? its over... he exposed us for being low IQ baiting morons
>over 120 hours long
the main story is actually about 40 hours long so 25%+ of the main game is cutscenes
Kek OP is still too moronic to check the WIkipage fpr RPGS
Or lets ask ChatGPT like the zoomers do today
Is Witcher 3 a Role Playing game? If yes Why, if No why?
Yes, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is considered a role-playing game (RPG). Here's why:
-Character Development: In The Witcher 3, you play as Geralt of Rivia,Throughout the game, you make choices and decisions that shape Geralt's story and affect the relationships he forms with other characters. You can also customize Geralt's skills, abilities, and equipment to suit your preferred playstyle, allowing for character progression and development.
-Open World Exploration: The game features a vast open world that you can freely explore. The open-world nature of the game allows for non-linear gameplay and gives you the freedom to choose how you want to approach different quests and challenges.
-Quests: The Witcher 3 offers a rich and immersive narrative with a multitude of quests. These quests can range from main storylines to side quests and contracts. As you progress through the game, your choices and actions can have consequences, affecting the outcomes of quests and the overall story. The game's emphasis on storytelling and player agency is a key characteristic of RPGs.
-Character Interaction and Dialogue: The Witcher 3 places a strong emphasis on dialogue and character interaction. Throughout the game, you engage in conversations with various characters, make choices in branching dialogue trees, and negotiate outcomes. Your decisions and interactions can impact the relationships between characters, as well as the course of the game's story.
-Role-playing Mechanics: The game incorporates traditional RPG mechanics, such as leveling up, acquiring experience points, and allocating skill points to enhance Geralt's abilities. You can also craft items, use alchemy, and equip different weapons and armor to tailor Geralt's playstyle to your preferences. These mechanics allow for character progression and customization.
You have stats to manage and improve via build, gear and potions. You have builds that can focus on at least three distinct areas of pure combat, magic and alchemy. You have lots of quests, exploration, crafting and economy to participate in. Of those quests, nearly all of them have some degree of choice and consequences, leading to different outcomes and results. The game has multiple endings that hinge on your choices from earlier quests. W3 may not be the best RPG nor the best action game but its hard to think of many better ARPGs.
Kind of agree. If you can’t self insert, its not an RPG. I don’t want to play as this old gay with gray hair
RPGs aren't about self-inserting, they're about role-playing.
that's the same thing
No. A self-insert is a character that has little to no personality of their own, and so you project your own personality onto them. Role-playing is stepping into someone else's shoes. This character isn't you, but you're acting as them.
roleplaying is definitely not playing any game with a scripted character
terrible bait
roleplaying is the game responding to your decisions, especially personal ones like build and appearance, or stat choices
No its not, you can play the role of a character without that character being you
>Shitty swords
>No helmets
>Shitty, Dark Souls knockoff combat
>Shitty nameless generic NPCs
>Shitty characters
I still don't get whats so special about this
It's the greatest video game of all time. Unironically. No baiting whatsoever, there is not a single game that has as much credibility as TW3 to call itself the GOAT. It's the pinnacle of Open World and RPG design.
Trolling is not allowed outside of >>>/b/
Open world games are trash and Witcher 3 is an action game with some stats, not an RPG. Try again.
It's the greatest RPG of all time thoever. And a game cannot be a RPG unless it's open world henceforthalbeit. Alas, low IQ peons cannot understand...
Final Fantasy XVI tease
>WRPGtrannies when they level up their speech to a 100 and get to skip a fight
EPIC ROLEPLAYING
It's not an RPG, it's a PRPG
more like PPrpg amirite
Just let normies think they're hardcore RPG nerds for once, it's not often they get out from the Fortnite/Dota wheel. Let it go, just this once.
But even my hardcore RPG fans sisters in good faith over at Codex have it in their top 15 RPGs of all timr
Codexers are massive hypocrites so it's nothing surprising. Try to make a thread there about a niche hardcore game and it'll get minimal traction. Bring up anything mainstream and people will talk and play, even if the same people were pretending for months that it's the worst game to come out, ever.
