one reason for its popularity is its got a lot of novel value being a type of game which normally has nowhere the level of budget that it has, meaning the graphics, dialogue, and stuff in general is more fleshed out than anything else like it made recently
but yeah it doesnt seem that amazing. it seems kinda neat 4 hours into it with all the branching story lines, i started out as a paladin wanting to be holy, now all of a sudden im an oathbreaker who feeds off of evil or something and i happened to also rescue a goblin from a prison in a village and went deep into some goblin keep and am now leading an assault of goblins to destroy the innocent village
im new to the genre though and i have a feeling a lot of huge flaws will begin to become more and more apparent to me the more i play, ive seen weird things in the game that seem like bad game design and i feel like its foreshadowing me becoming increasingly disappointed with the core gameplay, probably mostly the combat or things relating to inventory and stuff like that

exploring with mouse and keyboard is a fricking pain.
i plugged in a controller and suddenly it felt like a totally different game, left stick makes you walk around and right analog stick lets you move the camera around all like a normal game except you can move the camera much farther up or down which i cant do with mouse and keyboard
with m/kb i cant directly control the character to walk them around, i have to click somewhere on the map. i cant seem to make the camera follow a player, i cant even click the minimap to make people walk somewhere. you have to constantly move both the player and the character and even if you could link them it would still be lacking the way i can control the character with the gamepad controller
what the frick is this shit? the game isnt even on consoles yet and they have this whole totally different control scheme for gamepad which is very fleshed out albeit has its own weaknesses when it comes to combat and inventory management as you would expect but thats because a mouse is just easier for that shit. but i cant control my character like this with mouse and keyboard. and switching between them requires pressing a button on the new input device and waiting for the game to freeze for a second and unfreeze

It’s as close to 5E PHB as you could get in a game, it’s very well done. And with proximity initiative it’s literally as fast as TB combat can be - if you’d played the game you’d know that often turns happen simultaneously essentially.

Elden Ring and Cyberpunk are RPGs, no matter how much you cry about it. Action RPGs are as much a sub genre of RPGs and cRPGs are and frankly, I have no idea why you'd argue about Cyberpunk of all games. That game might be a buggy mess, but it's as oldschool as it gets in terms of its design philosophy. If Cyberpunk isn't an RPG, then neither is VTM: Bloodlines or Deus Ex.

I've never played an MMO with drop-on-death exp, stat modifiers that you dump points into, and real-time combat that relies heavily on collision timing and parrying/blocking mechanics. Elden Ring is really inventive for an MMO.

I smashed Kagha’s face in after she threatened to have a snake eat a kid, and then made her gypsy problem my problem and threatened to kill them all if I don’t fix it. She proceeded to tell her druids to kill women and children (which they did) - the game now blames me for this despite not doing anything besides killing Kagha before you could’ve found evidence that she’s bad and kill her (snake handling around kids and threatening genocide apparently aren’t big enough clues!)
All in all it’s a net positive, as far as I’m concerned i’m still lawful good (and as a bonus you lose all the worst companions + goblins are unironically more well mannered than the “good guy” NPCs)
