Level design is too linear. It's more in line with 3D Land.

This, the game is just fundamentally different from both from a design perspective.

Stiff controls and linear level design.

      >waggle shit
      >pointing at screen
      >no momentum
      >dogshit controls
      >green stars are worse blue coins that boot you out of the level
      >mario moves at 25% the speed he should
      nah

Being linear is not an inherent criticism. At that point youre just complaining that that game isnt what you want it to be. The more limited controls are tailor made to a more linear platformer with more focused level design compared to the sandbox mario games. They aren't gonna give Galaxy a mario 64 movement when the levels aren't made for it.

I'd argue the levels in 64 aren't very well made for the movement in that game either

        Anonymous

i know, but giving you limited controls will make the game less fun to play, the platforming is too simple, its just jump at the thing at the right time. the reason people like 64 and sunshine so much is because it has a really high skill ceiling, even though the games are not that hard.
the proof that nintendo figured this out is that mario odyssey also has more advanced movement stuff

        That wasn't a criticism, it's just a preference.

No "space theme" conceit like 64 had the typical mario level theme + peach's castle, Sunshine had the tropical vacation theme, Galaxy had floating beans in space. Gay as frick. Also UR MR GAY

This game definitely deserves the bing bing wahoo criticism. It's made for literal toddlers. You could've easily spent your entire childhood without being able to beat Super Mario 64

    >to 64
as much as I love Galaxy 1 the game is way too linear while on 64 you pretty much can frick with the whole level from the go most of the time
    >to Sunshine
anon nothing will be as bad as Sunshine, Galaxy has earned a place on the shelf with the good Mario games which is all of them, except Sunshine, obviously

Sunshine is fricking garbage. Not even for Mario standards, it's just a horrible game.
Whether or not 64 is better than Galaxy comes down to personal preference, but if you think Sunshine is better than either, you might have brain damage.

Nobody but Cubegays (the ones who still argue that it was "the last great Nintendo console" instead of the first mediocre one likely because they grew up with it) say that Sunshine was anything but trash. 64, both Galaxy games, and Odyssey are all better than Sunshine.

for me it's the noticeably worse camera system. There's one level where you have to lead a bullet bill to break something and the camera reliability screws up every time.

    >removes all camera control for some reason
    >shitty wiimote gimmicks like steering the ball you’re rolling on, being a fan to push a bubble, or having to pull on a star to fling mario
    >half the bosses are stupid tennis matches
    >extremely floaty controls, to the point where you can just wall jump and sp N to the t over anything by despite the level clearly trying to make you use a spring or power up to do it
    >hallways in space, so rather than an intriguing level to explore in a 3D world, it’s just a set passageway with a static void around you to funnel you from point A to point B
    >powerups like the fire flower are on a timer for some fricking reason
    >comet missions to pad out the number of levels
    >the only interesting power up, flying mario, is restricted to maybe two levels you can use it in
    >so many boring “find the 5 pieces to make a star cannon” sections

It takes away the freedom of movement in exchange for a more complicated linear platforming experience except it's still piss easy until you get to late game

The gravity mechanics are rarely put to any use to the point where they may as well be non existent. .

Each level is split into little chunks with cutscenes in between each chunk that slows things down

    The spring powerup sucks balls.

Yeah I remember back then every fricking last thing had to be orchestral because it was taken as le epic genre for le epic games.

The most fun I have with Mario nowadays is local multiplayer with 3D world since its fun to throw each other off ledges or frick around in general.
