Thieves are pure dodgetanks in this game, they're meant to be there and are wasted in the back. Griffon knights are pretty effective at dodgetanking too but not as much.
NTA, but yeah. Their damage falls off hard by the end of the demo ( level 10+). I just gave mine acrobatic boots and his only source of damage is poison proccing
generally classes that can equip shields because those give a big guard bonus. warriors like lex are pretty okay since they can equip shields and protect from ranged units. alain is a good frontliner because he has self sustain and can equip a shield. knight cavalry are decent frontliners too because they have a guard skill built in and can equip shields. the only class that cant equip a shield but can still be a good frontliner is thief. gladiators are too inconsistent and vulnerable to high damage classes like sellsword and counters like knight to be consistent frontliners. gryphon riders are an inbetween of knight and thief but something like a sellsword can just randomly 1 shot them if they don't miss so I tend to keep mine in the back.
the class is valkyria. mom has the same class and you play her in the prologue
leader effect is take less damage from ranged assists. no class trait. 2ap 1pp base (+1pp from shield in the prologue). seems to have slightly less pdef than legionnaire (hoplite advanced class), high atk, high mdef and medium base guard rate and low initiative (20 at lv48). can equip 2 medium shields
class's base skills are:
1ap, 100 potency st (singletarget), advantage vs flying (truestrike, ignore 50% def, +50 potency)
1ap, 100 potency st, unguardable, advantage vs armored (ignore 50% def, +50 potency)
2ap, 50x3 potency st, unguardable, ingore 50% def, +1pp on hit
1pp, 150 potency st, truestrike, counter upon being attacked by active skill, potency increases as user's hp decreases (up to +100)

But there is, there's a Prioritize for every kind of damage-modifying class trait like Armor, Infantry, Scout, Magic and such. I have Rolf set to always target Fliers and Scouts first.
I can only see two outliers, Gladiator, which would be absolute shit if you could specifically target it and the extra damage Fighter has against Archer which you wouldn't be able to reach by prioritizing them since they are always backlane, every other interaction seems to be covered.

Not perfect but this is what I did. He buffed Hodrick who went last. Unfortunately they only gave us two conditionals so it'll never be 100% precise. Gotta make sure it doesn't say "priority" in the description
Post your entire team comp. It might not even be possible with what they gave us to work with since stats targetting are considered priority rather than forced.
He's one of the faster units to get benched. Maybe bring him out if arrow assists are giving you trouble. But usually it's magic you have to be careful of.

There are two reasons why. The first, for why things get changed at all, is because the people localizing Japanese media tend to be the people that weren't able to succeed in getting a job in the western games or cartoon industries, so this is the only outlet for their (bad) writing at all.. The second, related to why changes occur like making women "strong and independent" or shoehorning in their personal politics goes deeper. While Japan and the US share a lot of vaguely similar interests in entertainment, and Japan since the post WW2 American occupation resembles American culture on a surface level, the two countries are very different politically, spiritually, and socially. The result is that when you have a highly political translator (which is relatively common due to the politicization of the western entertainment industry and western liberal arts academia), who we've established is reject that couldn't get a real writing job elsewhere, look at a Japanese work, they'll be offended and feel as if they need to "fix" what they see as wrongful outdated ways of thought which are perfectly normal in Japan.

with the current classes and equipment available in the beta, i think your best bet is to use your own shaman to debuff their initiative and pp and then use a knight with a column aoe to hit them in the backline
southeast of cornia, near fort lonteria is where you get the unique shaman who also unlocks the magic sigil mechanic (infinite exp grinding battles, but limited to 5 times for the demo). fort lonteria itself and the nearby fort zelkova has generic shamans

That's the thing, localization became a thing in the first place because some of the very early Japanese games brought to the west in the 80s had very flat writing that didn't appeal to western audiences.
But when the meaning of scenes, characters, plot points, or themes are outright changed / added that's when a line gets crossed.
yeah japanese tends to overuse canned phrases which gets really jarring in english if you translate it the same way every time. seeing 元気そうで何より as a greeting for the hundredth time will become boring in the context of a story meant to entertain, even if it might be said in a slightly different inflection. that being said, localizers should try to at least keep the vibe of the source

Battles being automatic was a fricking mistake. Not because the rest of the gameplay isn't interesting enough, but because the battles are where the visuals and the style of the game shines so they shouldn't be disposable/optional cutscenes. And interactivity adds a lot. After like 5 battles per map I'm just kinda over it and just skip to the results screen. I don't like the fact that I feel like doing that but it's the truth.

Stats seem to be a function of class growth + preferences. Josef might simply not be an offensively oriented character period.

yes. you basically build teams/units in such a way that they combo off of each other in ways that would be impossible to do in real time action gameplay. It's a strategy game, not a tactical one, so it's about planning ahead rather than adapting on the fly
A lot of the battle gameplay has to do with setting conditions for who to target and when abilities are used alongside with creating combos and shoring up weaknesses in your squads. Effective used movement and who you deploy and when are also large parts of battles.
Let's be honest, the Japanese writing is fricking terrible too. Japs just can't seem to shake the most eyeroller of fricking tropes. Like when Alain and Lex are sparring in the opening sequence, they call each other by their first names in the first sentence they speak just for exposition's sake. I bought the very first game of it's kind like this: Ogre Battle. I would have bought this game, but I'll just get it for free later. These unnecessary missteps in a world where I've got amazing games in every direction means I don't have the immediate desire to pay for it. It's not sexy enough like Dragon's Crown, and the translation reads like college student and not a true writer. Any writer who wrote like that would be roundly mocked and disregarded as having any skill. Writing of this level doesn't advance the art form of video games. If anything it is regressive because of how 1-dimensional it reads.

The growths can be the same, so far only Lord is the only truly unique class, you just get the unique character before their generic class counterpart generally.

For example, Alain costs 50 honor to promote which as far as I saw is the most expensive promotion.
You gain +1AP +1PP on promotion and an extra equip slot that varies based on the unit (So some get shields, some get an extra accessory, swordmaster gets a second weapon), no level requirement
It also gives you additional skills that you otherwise wouldnt get as you leveled. I think level 15 is the end point for what base classes get level wise

I don't think its terrible, but a lot of it is long winded and unneeded. So far anything that can be remotely homosexual has been subtle. Like there's an angel character that seems real close to a cleric. And even then it's shown that a lot of males go head over heels for the cleric.
Still not entirely sold on swordmasters. Hopefully they'll get more class-exclusive swords with cool effects like the one Melisandre comes with. I'm also not sure how their promoted skill, Meteor Slash is better than the pre-promote Keen Edge. The latter does more damage per AP, the fact that it's allows for two separate attacks means that it can trigger more ally passives, it's also true hit and buffs crit rate more. Keen edge (assuming crits are x2 damage) = 200 damage per activation, 400 total since it costs only 1 AP
Meteor Slash = 40 x 9 = 360 in one activation
I guess if you REALLY need someone dead before they can act then sure, you'd use it. But it seems more like a side-grade to me.
there are some buffs that only buff 1 action like gambler's coin and dancer's bracelet. in that case, you might want to use meteor slash instead. there are also defensive skills like swordfighter's own parry and valkyria's lethal hit block that only work on 1 hit that it can bypass. and as you've figured, sometimes it's better to 1 round somebody. it's not a straight upgrade but it shouldn't be
now this is way more exciting for swordmasters since they can finally take advantage of their high evasion instead of being cucked out of a parry because they didn't get hit

IMO my biggest issue with a side-grade in this game is the fact that you're going to have to set up contingencies in your tactics menu to account for it. That's fine and all except for the fact that they only allow so many lines (nowhere near enough IMO). It's true you can use separate presets but navigating the menus in this game has been quite troublesome for me despite having spent more than 20 hours on it. I still make the wrong inputs all the time.
my guess is that you will build for hyperoffensive teams that all use their 2ap skills to 1 round the enemy before they can take their turn. taking more than 1 round is fine if your team has built-in defenses but it might be fun to have a squad that has literally zero defensive units and just 6 dudes with insane initiative and blast all their 2ap skills at once

This is really degenerate when you remember that Melisandre always goes first and so can instantly nuke any annoying high evade enemies in the enemy squad and generate PP on the side.
The overall game plan for the promotion seems to be, use your weaker 1 AP attacks to soften the enemy and then blow them up with Charged Meteor Slashes.
2x Keen Edge would be 100% + 200%. assuming that criticals are 1.5x at base.
The alternative would be 100% + 360%.

generally classes that can equip shields because those give a big guard bonus. warriors like lex are pretty okay since they can equip shields and protect from ranged units. alain is a good frontliner because he has self sustain and can equip a shield. knight cavalry are decent frontliners too because they have a guard skill built in and can equip shields. the only class that cant equip a shield but can still be a good frontliner is thief. gladiators are too inconsistent and vulnerable to high damage classes like sellsword and counters like knight to be consistent frontliners. gryphon riders are an inbetween of knight and thief but something like a sellsword can just randomly 1 shot them if they don't miss so I tend to keep mine in the back.

The second, related to why changes occur like making women "strong and independent" or shoehorning in their personal politics goes deeper. While Japan and the US share a lot of vaguely similar interests in entertainment, and Japan since the post WW2 American occupation resembles American culture on a surface level, the two countries are very different politically, spiritually, and socially. The result is that when you have a highly political translator (which is relatively common due to the politicization of the western entertainment industry and western liberal arts academia), who we've established is reject that couldn't get a real writing job elsewhere, look at a Japanese work, they'll be offended and feel as if they need to "fix" what they see as wrongful outdated ways of thought which are perfectly normal in Japan.

That's the thing, localization became a thing in the first place because some of the very early Japanese games brought to the west in the 80s had very flat writing that didn't appeal to western audiences.
But when the meaning of scenes, characters, plot points, or themes are outright changed / added that's when a line gets crossed.
yeah japanese tends to overuse canned phrases which gets really jarring in english if you translate it the same way every time. seeing 元気そうで何より as a greeting for the hundredth time will become boring in the context of a story meant to entertain, even if it might be said in a slightly different inflection. that being said, localizers should try to at least keep the vibe of the source

Battles being automatic was a fricking mistake. Not because the rest of the gameplay isn't interesting enough, but because the battles are where the visuals and the style of the game shines so they shouldn't be disposable/optional cutscenes. And interactivity adds a lot. After like 5 battles per map I'm just kinda over it and just skip to the results screen. I don't like the fact that I feel like doing that but it's the truth.

yes. you basically build teams/units in such a way that they combo off of each other in ways that would be impossible to do in real time action gameplay. It's a strategy game, not a tactical one, so it's about planning ahead rather than adapting on the fly
More akin to squad management on a battlefield. Placement and Soldier types etc.
A lot of the battle gameplay has to do with setting conditions for who to target and when abilities are used alongside with creating combos and shoring up weaknesses in your squads. Effective used movement and who you deploy and when are also large parts of battles.
It's like a mobile game, think granblue or blue archive.

I bought the very first game of it's kind like this: Ogre Battle. I would have bought this game, but I'll just get it for free later. These unnecessary missteps in a world where I've got amazing games in every direction means I don't have the immediate desire to pay for it. It's not sexy enough like Dragon's Crown, and the translation reads like college student and not a true writer. Any writer who wrote like that would be roundly mocked and disregarded as having any skill. Writing of this level doesn't advance the art form of video games. If anything it is regressive because of how 1-dimensional it reads.

For example, Alain costs 50 honor to promote which as far as I saw is the most expensive promotion.
You gain +1AP +1PP on promotion and an extra equip slot that varies based on the unit (So some get shields, some get an extra accessory, swordmaster gets a second weapon), no level requirement
It also gives you additional skills that you otherwise wouldnt get as you leveled. I think level 15 is the end point for what base classes get level wise
You spend HONOR points that you can accumulate from quests and sidequest/deliveries/etc. Pretty much the same stuff you use to increase size+amount of your unit formations.

Recruitable characters are almost always helmetless for character distinguishing since they tend to use the same model/sprite for the rest of the class design otherwise.
That is unless the character specifically has a custom design that doesn't match up with any generics/named characters of the same class.

Still not entirely sold on swordmasters. Hopefully they'll get more class-exclusive swords with cool effects like the one Melisandre comes with. I'm also not sure how their promoted skill, Meteor Slash is better than the pre-promote Keen Edge. The latter does more damage per AP, the fact that it's allows for two separate attacks means that it can trigger more ally passives, it's also true hit and buffs crit rate more. Hopefully a cool sword that afflicts burn intrinsically (does not expend AP to inflict burn) comes along and proves me wrong. I'm so sick of swordmasters being shitty.

Keen edge (assuming crits are x2 damage) = 200 damage per activation, 400 total since it costs only 1 AP
Meteor Slash = 40 x 9 = 360 in one activation
I guess if you REALLY need someone dead before they can act then sure, you'd use it. But it seems more like a side-grade to me.
there are some buffs that only buff 1 action like gambler's coin and dancer's bracelet. in that case, you might want to use meteor slash instead. there are also defensive skills like swordfighter's own parry and valkyria's lethal hit block that only work on 1 hit that it can bypass. and as you've figured, sometimes it's better to 1 round somebody. it's not a straight upgrade but it shouldn't be
now this is way more exciting for swordmasters since they can finally take advantage of their high evasion instead of being cucked out of a parry because they didn't get hit

IMO my biggest issue with a side-grade in this game is the fact that you're going to have to set up contingencies in your tactics menu to account for it. That's fine and all except for the fact that they only allow so many lines (nowhere near enough IMO). It's true you can use separate presets but navigating the menus in this game has been quite troublesome for me despite having spent more than 20 hours on it. I still make the wrong inputs all the time.
my guess is that you will build for hyperoffensive teams that all use their 2ap skills to 1 round the enemy before they can take their turn. taking more than 1 round is fine if your team has built-in defenses but it might be fun to have a squad that has literally zero defensive units and just 6 dudes with insane initiative and blast all their 2ap skills at once

This is really degenerate when you remember that Melisandre always goes first and so can instantly nuke any annoying high evade enemies in the enemy squad and generate PP on the side.
The overall game plan for the promotion seems to be, use your weaker 1 AP attacks to soften the enemy and then blow them up with Charged Meteor Slashes.
2x Keen Edge would be 100% + 200%. assuming that criticals are 1.5x at base.
The alternative would be 100% + 360%.

There are a couple sexualized guys. But it's far more common on the women. But it's also not like all of them are. The designs are appealing, but rather understated for Vanillaware all around.

So last night I sorta got tunnel visioned and lost the latter half of the hag witch recruitment mission. But today with a fresh mind I went in and did some changing and boom, loaded it up and beat it.
I'm probably too small brained for the final game but I'm getting it either way since I'm enjoying it.

That mission was easily the hardest one for me out of the ones I did, that final corner is absurdly well guarded.
Last night I tried to brute force it and lost like twice. Once because they took my main base and the other because I kept throwing my units against their defenses.
Granted I was also DUDE HIGH LMAO so my thought process wasn't the best to start with. This morning however I withdrew some units, made a team with the hopilite to crush the barricades and killed those towers. The time limit really puts a damper on things but I should learn to put less of a focus on that.
If the demo timer runs out can you replay it by deleting it and starting a new file? When it comes to gear what's the minimum I should purchase upgrades? Like I won't be getting every weapon that gives a +1. Should I focus on like +3, +4?
