Misery and suffering builds character and is amazing for constructing a good atmosphere in fiction. There's a reason nearly every single great work of fiction has elements that make you feel down, because it's a piece of the puzzle required to draw out a balanced range of thought, compassion and emotion out of you. The most effective way to get you invested into a character isn't to coddle them, it's to put them through hardships and then observe them struggle and overcome them. That's hero's journey 101 writing tips.
