People were continually buying new switches during the lifetime of BOTW so new players were buying the game over a longer period of time than TOTK. By the time TOTK the switch market was saturated and anyone that wanted to play it most likely had done so within 1 month of release
After Covid lockdowns, Casual gamers became more interested in FotM style games. Buy a game, play it for a month, never touch it again. This isn't to say that the individual games died out immediately, necessarily. There have been a few games that lasted a tad longer, however most games just sit and the next FotM game is released and the cycle renews. The best recent example is Palworld. Fun game, had million players, but if you look at it now its not even a whole percentage of the playerbase left. They've all moved on to the new shiny game that released (in this case, a split between Helldivers, Granblue, Tekken; which itself is dying, or whatever.) Come another 2 weeks from now, and Those will all be on life support while FF7R2 takes the spotlight, which itself will only live in spotlight for a few weeks.
I don't like it, because it makes it so if you're not playing a game day 1, you're missing out on potential discussion and multiplayer experiences. I've been waiting for Hogwarts Legacy to go on sale so I can play it, because FRICK spending $70 on single players games, and when I do get to it, do you think I'll be able to get a full thread here about it? frick no.

It would be silly to say "actually I think Google is dying," but you do have to correct for the fact that search results for things like game details have degenerated massively since 2017.
At best you get a video you have to scrub though to find what you're looking for, but often it just comes up empty unless you add "reddit" and someone there has already answered the question.
I think a lot of people are starting to actually use websites like websites again instead of relying on search engines to collate information for them.
