For a long time, if you wanted to get published in china you had to give tencent basically 90% or MORE of all your profits in order to get published on their platforms. This is what gave birth to the insane p2w mobile/mmos of the time period, and unfortunately taught other countries that they could get away with charing players thousands of dollars for bullshit. CCp started getting directly involved in the gaming industry around 2016 and thats when big projects started being made without tencent frickery.

Korea sacrificed their indie/single-player scene for a multiplayer one. There were some singleplayer korean rpgs way back in the early 2000's but those haven't been made in decades. There's some new indie guys like Project Moon (ironically they had to sell their soul to mobile gacha to stay afloat) and such and you can find some other indie games like Skul but for the most part Nexon and whatever else have been dominating the online space for quite a while. I guess Ragnarok and Maplestory can sorta count as hits. And some niche stuff back then like Combat Arms, Soldier Front, Talesrunner, and all those other games on ijjigames or whatever.

However thanks to the ubiquity of clone PCs they EVENTUALLY rose to absolute dominance worldwide. But it took longer in the far east because DOS/Windows PCs were fricking AWFUL at non-latin languages. It's the same reason why iPhones are far more important to the Japanese than Android phones, because for the longest time only apple gave two shits about complex languages. You'd see more macs than win9x PCs, but partly that was because apple made nice compact all-in-ones that fit the japanese lifestyle far better than an oversized beige box.

AAA publishers are targeting PC because they need western revenue. the domestic audience only plays handheld and mobile games now. of course this also leaves a minority of core gamers in the cold, so they've also been building up a niche PC community. but it will never be mainstream.

Yeah I agree there was a lot of points in history but in my lifetime 9-11 was the big one. From my memory America was generally a well liked place before that and Europe wasnt flooded with Arabs and the Muslim world had some sense of modernity with Gaddafi and Saddam keeping the peace in secular govenrments. There was no big Anti America movement in America which meant the govenrment wasn't dividing the movement up into identity politics and making them fight each other instead.
