Translators and localizators don't actually speak Japanese very well. If they did, they would go into far more well paying industries to use their skills in, such as corporate and law and similar settings, where Eng<->Jap translators are always extremely desired and incredibly well paid.
So why do these people who barely speak Japanese opt to do these jobs? It's partially because they're people who barely know anything about japan but love japanese media. You know, tumblr freaks who keep reposting anime but claim to hate traditional gender roles in anime, etc. These are the types of people who localize these games. So obviously what they do when localizing is they just change shit to fit their ideals for what western culture should be.
They also barely speak Japanese, at best they speak it on the level of a preschooler, so a lot of sentences and messages are changed entirely because they simply dont understand. They run shit through a machine translator and go off that.
If you want to play games or consume any other Japanese media through anything but a western cultural lens, you must either:
>seek out a trusted fan translation that you trust understands japanese well and doesn't add bullshit
>learn Japanese yourself and be sure

These words are synonymous. There isn't a clear reason it was done, but it might have just been a translation from the remake JP script, not a copy from the original EN script, and the translator just chose a slightly different word with the same meaning. Unless you're comparing every little piece of the original script to the remake, how the frick would you even notice? This is a far cry from removing or changing the meaning of content.
