Messmer as I already stated is the child of Radagon and Marika most likely. I wouldn't be surprised if he killed all the giants at the Mountaintops, he is called "The Impaler" after all, see their impaled chests? He may have fallen to the Fell God's influence or something (see: him using fire) and is now pissed off at Marika after she conquered all the kingdoms.
There's a location currently in the game called "The Impaler's Catacombs", maybe that place has some clues.
