Don't forget the fact that you can't even do anything with builds until you grind a million skills for all the classes (building your mercs matters more than your own character) first. Game would've been cool if I played it around the time it was current, but you can hardly justify blowing so much time into it now that it's a ghost town and mostly just about pulling groups so your mercenaries can kill them while you try to feel useful.

Probably true but its a very very low bar at the moment.
I preordered it, played it from the release for a few years and honestly over time it just got worse.
Pros are that the world is very pretty, tons of things to explore and loads of dynamic events. It's mostly casual and comfy to run around doing stuff, no constant gear treadmill.
Cons are that it is very grindy, especially if you want to do endgame crafting.
Once you explore the world it starts getting kind of stale and repetitive.
PvP is pretty shit and any balance is destroyed by the new classes in the expansions. Also no world PvP or competing for resources.
95% of the cool item skins, especially new ones, are web shop exclusives in a game where skins were supposed to be how you progress your character.
The amount of items you loot gets a bit overwhelming, especially because you have to unlock additional bag slots with real money.
Introducing mounts was a mistake, they look out of place and let you skip loads of stuff in the old world in unintended ways.
Speaking of looking out of place, many skins dont fit the overall game aesthetic and loads of people have the MLP/troon aesthetic.
Not sure if this is still the case but PvP and dungeons were completely abandoned for a very long time with the exception of fractals.
Loads of specific items are locked behind living story chapters, which if you missed them have to be unlocked for real money.
Overall its an okay game to mess around in, but it has loads of issues too.
PvP is rigged. There is no competition, just RMT that Anet is in on. WvW much the same, somehow people care enough I guess. So it's a moot selling point. Raids are also sold for RMT, that's about as much as I have seen in raid finder. Endgame is fashion, but all the cosmetics are cash shop.

Let's be honest the game just needed a gear treadmill. Masteries just don't fricking work at getting people excited to play. That and the game needs less filler spells. So much of the abilities are completely useless in 99% of situations. Combat is still fun, but no reason for it to not be better.
Also needs a more challenging open world. Not hardc0re le epic gam3r shit, but certainly needs more sense of danger. The open world leveling and exploring is the best part of the game by far.
Story is basically dogshit. Mmo writers are just not it. But the vibe of the world is really feels expansive. I love how many structures and interesting things there are in the world. They serve almost no function but really make it feel alive and real. The random events are seriously great too at doing that.
The troony shit is way overblown, considering you'll only encounter it if you give a frick about the story. The worst of it comes from the tumblr tier player base. It's not completely infested though. Just mostly.

It's wierd to me that it doesnt take long to get end game gear and since theres no further stats to pursue theres little else to persue in the game besides glamor, yet they release so few new armor sets/skins.
Legendaries were meant to be the long term grind but its boring grinding extremely long for just one item as opposed to having new armorsets to find in dungeons released every few months to look forward to. And having the materials for them being sellable and therefore linked to gems and real money just incentivizes devs to make grinds miserable to tempt people to open their wallets

This game made me physically cringe multiple times, it's quite impressive given my tolerance to it. Besides rather bad story it's a decent game underneath. Combat is good, some raid encounters and fractals are cool. Game used to have tought and somewhat challenging metaevents but those got nerfed or powercreeped to appease farm efficiency obsessed crowd.

I tried so hard to enjoy this game. But it's impossible. Not sure how to explain this but all the content feels "fake", "artificial", I'm not trying to use meme words here just explaining that it doesn't feel like WoW or FFXIV or OSRS where I feel like I'm doing real content. Also saying that GW2 is the most wallet friendly MMORPG is the biggest bullshit ever. GW2 has the biggest upfront cost, and after shelling $150 on expansions you'll realize you barely have character slots or inventory slots or bank slots. I think you only start with 2 fricking rows in the bank or maybe 3? Its fricking ridiculous, you feel like a subhuman. Combat isn't very good. I like the exploration and most of the world, but hate the combat, hate the specialization system and I kind of hate how it's become more sci fi than fantasy but that's personal preference
I played Guild Wars since 2006, and unlike a lot of people who hated this game for being nothing like GW1, I gave this game a fair chance and played on and off for almost a decade before finally quitting for good last year. Here is an unbiased honest verdict on the pros and cons
Pros:
>The big battle zerg vs zerg mode, despite being completely ignored by the development team for the entire lifespan of the game, is incredibly fun if you're into big battles
>The mounts are the best mounts in MMO history and its not even close. Towards the end of my time playing this game I found myself playing the beetle race content more than any other content, it's legitimately a great racing game
>You don't have to spend 12 hours per day grinding to stay up to date with the meta like a lot of MMOs demand you do
Cons:
>The current development team is maybe the worst AAA development team I've ever seen in my life. Last year when I finally quit the game, the lead balance designer (a troony of course) admitted that he not only started playing the game a few years ago, but also has never played some of the classes that he is in charge of balancing. This is a microcosm of the entire dev team
>Even though you don't have to grind 12 hours per day to keep up with the bare minimum, the game still encourages you to grind every day like a job for anything other than the bare necessities
>The game has been in a content drought for over half a decade now, they keep repeating a vicious cycle of saying "we know there's no content right now, but that's because we have an expansion coming" and then the expansion comes out and is severely lacking in content. Rinse and repeat to this day

Last and most importanly

It was purely cooperation between players, just pure fun, no sweaty tryhard competition for loot like most MMOs. But now that the game is old and dying, half of the maps are flat out empty, even with the megaserver thing trying to get everyone into the same server. Running around an empty map, soloing content that was clearly designed for groups of adventurers, is a horrible dreadful feeling. The game in its current state (or when I last played it) is incredibly lonely and it suffers from a declining population even more than most MMOs do. It really just evokes a feeling of pure sadness nowadays, knowing how good it could have been but was squandered by devs who don't care and don't even play their own game

The chaotic moronation of it is why I enjoyed it. It fit in well with GW2's casual pick up and play appeal. You don't have to spend 3 hours prepping for each war session, you just hop into the map and group up with the nearest blob and then shenanigans happen. But even WvW felt old and lifeless by the time I quit. Outside of the first hour of reset night, there were never high enough populations to get queues.

I played way back during the original/vanilla and basically grabbed the 2nd and 3rd expansions simply for the frick of it when they arose, but missed on the most recent (Cantha,Dragons?) one - I've thought about giving it another try, but I am concerned of a lot of stuff mostly with monetization.

When I played ages ago one thing I couldn't fricking stand was the "dye system". The actual "unlocking" of the dyes account wide was fine, but the problem was

Gear has default look. Then you do something to apply another color, skin/appearance etc.. to it, which now is "Gear, Cloud White" or "Gear, Edgelord Sword Skin". Not this piece of shit.
GW2 had "chest slot, dye 1 2 and 3" independent of gear. So you'd get a brand new shirt or whatever and it would just take on the colors of whatever was in the chest slot dyes, so its like EVERY new gear you got would have the same color/pattern until you manually changed it?

There was a color called "dye remover" which I though oh good, it would just be the "default" look for each item. NOPE. It seems to be a garbage shit brown . Why can they not get this right if they seem to focus so much on having skins, customization and all that shit? Like it takes a lot of fun out of getting a brand new item and wanting it to look "like it did in the example, icon, or even item mall" and you have to manually frick with it - IF you even have the proper colors dyes to get it ot that point (which all cost in game or premium currency etc).

Reasons not to play: If you care about story in any meaningful way avoid it like the plague. Cookie cutter stories or dumb character decisions with no explanation are plenty. This game also has the most aggravating part of writing where something is unknown/creepy and then the game will just spew dialogue on how it works or marvel tier quips ruining that feeling. The game has content that might just be abandonware, an example are dungeons. I needed to do a dungeon for a legendary item and I couldn't find anyone willing to do the one I needed for months
Reasons to play: Gameplay is really satisfying and smooth for an MMO. PvP is also surprisingly fun.
I stopped playing after the final Heart of Thorns living world updates. This could all have changed for all I know, but I can't bring myself to play again because of the maddening dialogue/story.
it only got way worse. i lasted until the expansion they released last year and the writing was so awful that it made me quit, even though i was never super bothered by the writing before that.
Shame, looks like the writers were able to avoid being fired during that fiasco when an executive came back. I really don't understand why its so hard for these people to write a basic consistent story when it comes to MMOs.

No subscription fee, free story updates, and never feel like I'm too underpowered from missing out. The lack of "immediate" rewards from doing stuff does kind feel bad though, but you just have to adjust to the expectation of everything being a long term thing.

If you're diving in new, you're gonna be lost. Say what you want about WoW, but the general story, characters, races, gameplay and progression (no matter what you chose) makes sense.
This game had me lost from day 1. I didn't know who I was, the backstory, where I was, what was really going on and, when it came time to fighting, it just mashing buttons and you flip between two (ranged/melee). I had no idea if I was doing anything right or not. With WoW, it's clear.
I never did figure out how the power upgrading system or whatever its called works and what gear helps or not. It's all confusing.

Classes are flexible and the build crafting is crazy, with it about to get even crazier in August when new expansion drops

The event system, while pretty basic in the core game, is a fantastic way of making the world feel alive and in the expansions it only gets better
It is definitely worth checking out at least. And it doesn't fall into the "it gets good after 100 hours" trope. By level 20-30 you will have a feel for the game and be able to judge whether or not you want to keep playing.
