localization has never been the enemy. they have only either left games unaffected or improved them. censorship for local regulations and consulting overseas publishing companies has done far worse damage. it cant be reversed by fan patches or learning a new language.
i also will always believe souls is made worse by the difficulty. it shouldnt be mixed with rpg mechanics. sekiro is the best in the series for gutting the rpg shit. from should make games like sekiro, and if they want various weapon types, just give the player multiple characters with different mechanics like dmc5.
if they want to make the rpg mechanics work better, they need to make the games a lot more readable (clearer attack windups and better hitboxes like sekiro) and actually try to balance all of the options. maybe they could make a mode called the "we actually gave a shit about our vision" mode with these improvements.

i do play a lot of games though. the only real difference i notice between japanese games and western games is that japanese games tend to be more linear and story focused than a lot of the western games that i play. like i was geninuely shocked at how many cutscenes yakuza 0 had since I was just a expecting a simple brawler game.

I thought OP's image implied western AAA vs Jap AAA which I would argue goes to Japan since western game companies dropped the ball hard the last 10-15 years. Japan as well, but not as much. The issue for me is too many AAA western games are too focused on being cinematic instead of just being fun, and then they just do generic open world collectible shit instead of doing interesting level design that's built around the gameplay mechanics. Basically they play it too safe. Not to say Japs don't have this same issue when you look at shit like the Yakuza and Souls games. It's just not often enough you see big devs taking risks and doing unique/novel shit anymore

The last good western AAA game in my opinion was Doom Eternal even though I found that the upgrade system made the game too easy. Also Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order even though it's just a souls clone.
