Why the frick did they decide to release a fire emblem game in 1999 on the SNES?

Also general "games released on their console's deathbed" thread I guess.

Because the plan to make an N64 Fire Emblem failed miserably and this was a consolation effort.

What ultimately became Binding Blade for GBA was originally planned for the 64DD as "Maiden of Darkness" with Thracia as a side-project, but between the hardware shift and Kaga's increasing discontent for Nintendo, it never came to fruition and Thracia ended up getting the development focus.

or maybe Kage get his lazy bum, localizing western release and work on ultra console as honorable employee.

they could have waited a two years to release it as a GBA launch title, would have been more successful than on a dead console

Wasn't R&F released on SNES because it would have reached more players than porting MM8 to the N64?

it sold better than most N64 games. the strategy fan base still had super famicoms and this game probably cost nothing to make.

The commercial cartridge release was actually in 2000, the version of Thracia released was essentially a promotional item given through magazines for download on an obscure add on. It still sold a decent amount considering how the super famicom was essentially 2 generations behind and it was sandwiched between the launch of the PS2 and a bunch of high profile RPG releases on the Ps1 like FF8 and 9 and DQ7, added to the fact it probably cost nothing to make.

the answer to any "why would developer/publisher bother with [game for console late into its life cycle]" is why wouldn't they? yes, some of you had chowderhead parents who thought "the new console makes the old one obsolete, let's sell it," but largely most of us kept them. and despite a loud minority of graphicsgays that have persisted over the years and ever still evade the rope, most of us would still buy a game for a previous gen console if it seemed good enough. which, it usually did, because late-life-cycle games are often remembered for having a good deal of polish thanks to dev experience as opposed to rough/often experimental launch titles

Thracia experienced a ton of scope creep during its development cycle since the original idea was to rush a smaller game solely for the Nintendo Power flashcarts. Also the individual cartridge wasn't released until 2000.

How are the pre-GBA Fire Emblem games? I mainly played the GBA ones and haven't touched the others even though the remake on the DS interest ed me.

Thracia is still the peak of the series
The first 2 are ok as pieces of museum, they can have some charm, but they play very slow and inventory management in 1 can be annoying
3 is a solid entry, and includes a remake of the first game that fixed the slowness and changed the inventory management (also removed a few mediocre maps due to constraints)
4 is a love it or hate it kind of game, the huge maps are great but it's like they forgot to put enemies in there. otherwise it has some cool unique stuff that can make it worthwhile to play.
the games made by Kaga, the creator of the series, after he left Nintendo, are all better than his Fire Emblems except Thracia

Are there any definitive translations for the SFC games? It looks like a total mess on RHDN.

Why are modern "gamers" like this and what are they even doing on this board?
