Mauville had so much less content in RSE than in ORAS

because thats what big cities are. a big shopping mall.
Also in the originals it was an empty shit. The redesign gave it so much personality. Although it always felt like some kind of dystopic hellhole

It looks nothing like a city. You have never been in a city if you think thats what they look like. It looks like a mall.

Lumiose did a decent job of emulating what a city looks like. And that was even in the same generation and on the same hardware as oras.

no real city looks like lumiose. are you crazy? and if anything mesagoza is the closest

Lumiose is literally based off paris and its functionally a very scaled down mini version of it. Its also like 5 times bigger than mauville so its a much better representation of a city.

And Mesagoza is literally based on Lisbon + 1 Barcelona building. Your point?

    >oras mauville does way too goddamn much, they just couldn't contain the cancer that was lumiose to one game

I love Mauville in RSE. The stretch between Verdanturf and the water to the east of Mauville is the best place to grind. Going between Slateport and Fiery Path is also a kino stretch to grind on.

they needed a hub city but lumiose 2.0 would take too long to make and they forgot lilycove exists

This is easily my least favorite tweak made in ORAS. Mauville's new design doesn't align with Hoenn's theming at all. Why the frick is there a giant manmade hellscape adjacent to a tropical rainforest and an active fricking volcano? Hoenn is supposed to be a region where the people coexist with nature and play by the cards they were dealt. Of course the fact that ORAS released during the collective brain-rot that is Gen 6 is to blame for this. GF didn't want the departure from shitty Kalos to sovlful Hoenn to be too drastic, so they made sure to include plenty of Gen-6-oriented brain-rot features, like trying to emulate Lumiose City in the form of the 'new and improved' Mauville. What a fricking joke.

Keep in mind they also turned the mini-dungeon that was New Mauville into a single square room.

      ORAS fricking sucked overall

This. Watson in the original mentions that he gave up on converting the city, fitting with Hoenn’s themes of tradition and connecting with nature, and implying that the cost of such a conversion would be too great- either to the environment or to the city itself. He later requires help to shut off his generator because all of his plans were environmental hazards.

One of my least favorite ORAS retcons was this though
      >neat yin-yang theme with Hoenn having an active volcano on the land side, and a dormant one filled with rainwater on the ocean side
      >Sootopolis also has a duality with Mt. Pyre, with both being oceanic mountains with ties to the natural passing and reincarnation of spirits in the planet, as well as one being a prison for Kyogre/Groudon should they rampage and the other a sacred ground for holding their control orbs safely
      And then,
      >ORAS shits on the Sootopolis lore, turning it into “DUDE this place was created because it’s where the MEGA METEOR fell and opened up a fissure where MEGA ENERGY pours out allowing Rayquaza to turn into MEGA RAYQUAZA as foretold by AZ’s MEGA prophecy!!!”
      Fricking abysmal.

Gen 5 started the trend of Needing a Trademark Meme City like Castelia and Lumiose and Mauville as it was just wasn't gonna cut it even tho it was the most logical candidate.

The thing that gets me about them choosing Mauville of all places is that Lilycove has all the hallmarks of being a "landmark" for the region without all the bloat (like Goldenrod being the big city in Johto to contrast all the rural sticks and oldschool architecture).
    >port town, so people can come and go here easily
    >place where Master Contests are located (RS), or where Contests happen in general (E)
    >Department Store to get all sorts of goods you can't get elsewhere
    >Safari Zone is the route east of it, attracting more tourism and revenue
It only makes sense. Even the Japanese anime OP makes the point of Minamo (Lilycove) being an important locale.
What's more annoying is that Mauville is a relatively simple town to drive home the theme of Wattson fricking up his plan of modernizing and making New Mauville which also ties into the "living with nature" feel a good chunk of the region like Fallarbor, Fortree and the water towns have. Turning it into a successful mall city misses the entire point.

mauviles only boon is that its a fly point right smack in the middle of hoenn and has routes in all four directions meaning its gonna be traveled to extensively. ORAS shouldve leaned much harder into this, but im not quite sure what. maybe making new mauvile a fully fledged dungeon? its supposedly a reverse skyscraper carved into the ground so it couldve been so many neato things.

the city that mauville is based on had a lot of large-scale development and reconstruction in the last 10 or 15 years. ORAS is a remake of RS, but also plays around with being a pseudo-sequel to it on a meta-textual level (e.g. the dexnav model numbers, some throwaway dialog about things having occured 10 or however many years ago, etc.)

the reason mauville got upgraded and not lilycove or any other city you want to pick is very obvious – mauville's irl counterpart, kumamoto, got a major upgrade, that none of the other cities experienced.

      >Turning it into a successful mall city misses the entire point.
no, you've missed the point of how they do things. if you wanted to make a game design argument about why mauville isnt a good choice for an upgrade, that's a different discussion, but you're arguing from an in-game lore/world-building perspective, and yet you're missing the point of how that world is put together in the first place

because it was better than just a regular old town with 4 buildings plus it builds on lore from the original games.

Honestly? Because it's a city with 4 exits in the middle of the region, they could either work and do some good coding to work like in Gen 3 or justitfy the loading screens with a "story reason" and that's what they did. I fricking hate this city now, too big and is anti-comfy, loading screens up the ass to go out, next floor or to the garden in the middle, looks like shit too.

It was a nice change and I like how it set it apart from the originals as a different experience. It's why it's better than BDSP. It was a reimagining of R/S not a remake.
