Because GamesWorkshop is fricking moronic and only gives the IP to literal who studios that turn it into something garbage. Only good 40k game from recent time would be Mechanicus and that is literally just Xcom.

Or maybe good games studios don't want to work on a trashy IP like this and accept whatever terms gw gives them.
      gw isn't commissioning these games.

      Anonymous

      WRONG
This is not what is happening. GW doesn't choose or seek out anyone. It's the other way around. Only literal whos want this license. If some bigger dev would want it, they would reach an agreement, like happened with CA. But no big dev has any need to share profits with GW. Any big publisher can make IP out of thin air and via marketing sell millions. Literal whos need some license or else nobody else would bother with their shovelware. If they get any Warhammer license they already have dedicated consoomers ready to spend money on their product. Those devs would rather use Star Wars and Lotr if they could, but they can't. So they have to resort to Warhammer

GW is not at fault here at all. And their approach is actually preferable, because so what that 9 out of 10 games are turd? I will simply not buy them and instead play that one that is good or at least promising. If not for their approach there would be no Vermintide. And even Battlefleet Gothic and Mechanicus are fun.

Sega and Relic was probably the biggest publisher/developer on Warhammer before DoW3 happened. Now CA's probably the biggest.

Relic hits gold and just stop, like how Creative Assembly stops making kino action game like Spartan: Total Warrior.

Wouldn't it be more amazing to join and support teams of eccentric Skitarii and their Secutors overseers instead of generic Cadian radio lady? Space marine is so fricking bland it's like plain white bread with nothing on it.

          Anonymous

That's the point. Space Marine was designed for people who dont know shit about 40k and wanted to play something cool, so they made the story as bland as 40k can be, which is still pretty interesting if you dont know much about it or not at all.
I remember interviews with Relic and GW shit at the time, and its why they picked UM as protags instead of Relic's own Blood Ravens, since the UM are designed to be newbie friendly on the TT as well from a lot of standpoints
But yes it probably would have been more interesting and thematic for actual admech stuff, but people might have been too weirded out by it, so I can see why they played it safe and went with the Cadians who are the cookie cutter UM equivalent in the Guard

            Anonymous

also this was back in 2011, long before GW had solidified any kind of design or solid theme for the Skitarri in particular. So GW might have even mandated not to have any designs for Skitarri. Remember this was in the early 2010s so GW was probably a lot more anal and less collaborative than they are now with say, CA and TWW3

Yeah. Stuff like Halo is an exception rather than the rule, many sci-fi properties arent too mainstream compared to how many cool sci-fi games/movies/books there are that in comparison barely anyone knows about in the cultural zeitgeist

the warhammer franchise fricking sucks. They ruined it. They gave away that license way to easy and now there is no quality in anything. The base boardgame fricking sucks and is more expansive than ever with less detailed figures to rip you off more. The games all suck. Dawn of war tried to be a moba and was a stillbirth. All warhammer games are fricking dogshit.

    I have a theory.
I think GW actively discourages and doesn't allow really high quality 40K games because they might detract from figure sales. Now you may think "Well anon, that sounds fricking moronic, that goes against everything that they teach you in Marketing 101", and you'd be correct. GW has shown many times in the last few months they're run by incompetent suits that have no idea what they're doing.

That, or talented devs simply no longer give a frick about 40k or are unwilling to put up with GW meddling.
