Because the characters acted like they were in persona instead of smt, which was annoying if you weren't into that. That being said, gameplay wise it improved on literally everything from IV, and I feel like people forget that when they say its absolute shit.

God in SMT is not a character but some exterior force to the universe. The demon masquerading as God is himself just another demon, just one that has gamed the system really hard. >The axiom is not God, is a force

              >if you think irl religions think God is a Zeus-style skyman, then you are mistaken
Many irl religions give their major God a physical appearance that can be easy to understand rather than an abstract force.

The Axiom fits the definition of a God better than big yellow floating head.

The demon named "YHVH" very much does represent the real Yahweh worshipped by Abrahamists, the force above him is more of an abstract philosophical concept akin to the Monad.

            Anonymous

I think you may be either confused as to what the Abrahamists actually believe or what gnostics believe
            > Monad
Which is the true God in Gnosticism, Nirvana as an example of an atheistic supreme reality that isn’t supposed to be God, the monad isn’t Nirvana - the monad is God. However, abrahamic religions see YHVH as that philosophical abstract monad, YHVH is accepted as the unmoved mover Plato talked about in Catholic philosophy.

YHVH is an egregore that is formed out of the surface level aspects of YHVH in abrahamic religion and the law ideology, YHVH in SMT comes from human perception

              Anonymous

The belief of the Abrahamists is secondary, the setting of SMT is closer to Gnosticism than, say, mainline Christianity. Yahweh is not the highest force of reality in it, and is explicitly identified as the Abrahamic God.

                Anonymous

Yes, but the word ‘God’ doesn’t just refer to ‘God’ in abrahamic religion but the concept in all religions that have a supreme God. A Sikh will say the believe in ‘God’ and the whole ideology of Sikhism is ‘there is no Hindu there is no Muslim’ that is the true religion is found in all religions that worship a higher God, the same God. A Hindu Shaivite will call Shiva God, not just a god, but explicitly God.

                Anonymous

Yeah, but the Axiom as in SMT is not a personal deity in the way most religions imagine. It is more akin to Brahman, though that exists separately. I think the implicit anthropomorphism of the term "god" as used by people is just the issue here, otherwise I'm not arguing anything.

                Anonymous

Brahman is still called God, it’s just a pantheistic interpretation of God

As I said the thing I would explicitly say is not God is something like nirvana, but I think the axiom passes as falling under ‘God’ and some Christians see God under that way

                Anonymous

I think use of the word "God" for these forces is inappropriate, but it's ultimately irrelevant. I just don't agree with it because the word is so closely tied to the concept of Sky Daddy.

                Anonymous

That has more to do with your biases concerning abrahamic religion than anything else, if you really study abrahamic philosophy than God isn’t supposed to be ‘sky daddy’ beyond surface level representations. You fell for the biggest occult blind there is

                Anonymous

I certainly have animosity towards Abrahamism, but whether their theology ends up with a Sky Daddy or not is not the point here, but the implications of the word in general use. Calling the Axiom "God" can lead to impressions like that it has opinions or relationships with people.

                Anonymous

The messiah exists because of the Axiom. By definition it has a relationship with humans, for all intents and purposes it has given humans the keys to the kingdom. Unlike the demons I don't think it can be described in human terms or having human opinions but it is invested in the fate of humans.

                Anonymous

I just oppose anthropomorphising it, because it is not the same kind of actor as any lesser being, and gods as we know them are typically anthropomorphic. The Christian Yahweh is humanised to the highest possible degree and this ultimately shapes the average Westerner's conception of "God". I honestly don't know how the Japs see this, they seem to casually refer to some entity called "Kami-sama" in everyday speech, but acknowledge no such being in their actual religion or personal beliefs.

                Anonymous

Brahman can still not be God, but in the way that the Brahman is similar to the axiom I would say that sort of interpretation of the Brahman would be called God

                Anonymous

Only within the context of the demons themselves. However the demons are themselves colored by human perception, in their natural state they are simply elements of nature but humans attribute their form and personalities. YHVH in SMT is not a God but rather a powerful energy that has the role of all powerful creator thrust on it, despite not being all powerful at all.

YHVH got fricked up in the SJ timeline and the Demiurge you fight there is a fragment of him.

            Anonymous

I know it's supposed to be YHVH, and makes sense since you're assisting Law in that ending, but it's never outright stated to be him and so makes me wonder if it wouldn't have been someone else possibly.

SJ does make a lot of sense as a loop though, if humans win, they kick the can down the road another hundred years until they almost ruin their planet again because they never learn, if chaos wins, the world goes back to its primordial start until someone powerful comes along and re-subjugates the world and brings order, it's only really law that creates an "eternal" world that never changes and eventually loops back on itself in a great cycle. So if that's the case, YHVH has to lose to arrive in the SJ timeline because if he ever wins things will become completely stagnant.

SMT V is the worst way to get into SMT because it barely plays like previous games and has tons of issues, notably being unfinished with poor dungeon design for it's two dungeons, and being too short with no other route being worth to try out due to shitty exclusive demons and that true neutral route has the real true final boss.
I would recommend to wait until the SMT 1 PSX fan-translation is done, so you can understand how SMT works and how it evolved from there.
      >Need something for the switch because I'm going to be away from home for about 2 weeks.
Does it need to be a JRPG? You could get better games instead like:

It doesn't have to be a JRPG. I was thinking about Dragon's Dogma too but I have that game on PC and never really played it much. DQ11 might be a good idea too, I liked the demo. I was looking for a big game I could get lost in while trying to kill some time.

Well if you're looking for games to kill lots of time, then I would recommend Dragon Dogma, Skyrim, and Witcher 3 since they have tons of content to chew through.(Same with Dragon Quest 11, although it's obviously shorter than those titles)
There's also the collections I mentioned, which I believe you could get Origins and Combo Pack for less than $80, meaning you can get five games with tons of replay value to play for awhile.

    Actual reason:
Game was literally schizophrenic in writing. Your friends can hear Dagda but never say anything about his edgy shit. Dagda gets replaced by a clone in the "good ending". Arcs were rushed and characters were forced and underdeveloped. Frick Nozomi actually the worst betrayal I've ever seen in any jrpg game.

The "good ending" literally has a one week time skip with Stephen just randomly telling you to kill God because they couldn't find a way to steer the story that way naturally.

the good route is obviously the intended one because no matter what comically edgy dialogue you pick nobody really acknowledges or cares about it.
      >okay nanashi we'll let you off the hook but only if you swear to not betray us again
      >EAT SHIT
      >haha that's our nanashi!

Yeah that's the problem too. You have NO reason to betray your friends because the good ending is literally a "golden ending"
That's why I always thought they should've kept Asahi dead or at least a blank state in the good ending so at least Nanashi has a reason to go "frick this, the world can go to shit. Time to be God."

I played a bit of Megami Tensei 1(yes) and I actually liked it, but I kind of want something with more substance. Should I play SMT3?

One of IV's biggest strengths is it's world building. It feels like a living breathing functioning world. It had like a hundred pages from Kaneko of world building that was all cut from the game yet even with those scraps of information we still know everything we need to know about the characters and their motivations. Walter wants a world where anyone can rise up to power due to his upbringing as a Casualry, he wants to rise to power and show that anyone can accomplish anything as long as they have the power after years of being told he was worthless. Jonathan wants to follow the path of the lord due to his teachings as a Luxuror, all he wants to do is maintain his status quo of his peaceful life and his noble nature wants him to share that with everyone. Isabeau is also a Luxuor but never cared for being a Samurai and when the time came for genocide she got cold feet, all she ever wanted was to protect the people she never signed up for mass genocide. Point is that each character has personality and that personality drives their actions so when they eventually go apeshit you understand why things came to be. Same goes with all characters in that game. It's insanely well written. However in IVA everything is tossed out the window in favor of "god bad, friendship good". Everyone is unbelievably annoying and never shuts up, cutscenes go on for about 70% longer than they need to because everyone has to at least get one quip in. I only chose the chaos route because the characters were so annoying, and grinding for fusion cash was so annoying to i never beat YHVH. All the clever world building is thrown out for in favor of sucking the protagonists dicks. The npc dialogue turned from about their daily habits and how much everything fricking sucks to how much Flynn and Nanashi fricking ROCK! Gameplay is fine but that's only because it copy and pastes just about everything from IV. It's fine if you just want more IV gameplay but I'd recommend only playing IV.

i don't get smt fans, grinding for cash is enough to miss out on the (best) final boss but grinding quests isn't? you never mentioned grinding for iv...... this seems very biased
also isn't the npc dialogue changing to more positive comments in apoc a bit of a reflection of the whole "gathering tokyo's hopes" section of iv's neutral ending?

Didn't mention grinding mainly because I played on normal for IV and hard for IVA. So you really need macca to perfect demon builds.

IVA is weird. While playing it I was constantly thinking how much of an improvement it is over IV with all the QoL changes like the map and Smirk. But after finishing it I've never had any desire to replay it, while I have beaten IV three times (once for each ending). I can barely even remember what happened in the game, except that it takes the story of IV and turns into a saturday morning cartoon where Lucifer and Merkabah become straight up cartoon villains.

Also they completely change the nature of the Ashura Kai and Ring of Gaea factions, humanising them and making them seem more reasonable, despite the fact that anyone who played the original IV knows that there are literally human farms underneath the Ashura Kai building where implied child rape occurs. It's bizarre

      >despite the fact that anyone who played the original IV knows that there are literally human farms underneath the Ashura Kai building where implied child rape occurs
to be fair, inverted roppongi or whatever that facility is doesnt appear in IV's story again in any way. Its a pretty fricked up case of wasted potential

there's a lot of wasted potential in both games
and i will use this comment about potential to tell my point about how good the divine powers could have been, with their plan forcing satan and merkabah to team up and fight them but not writing endings for if i agree with the divine powers or satan/merkabah
i could think a lot more about the potential in stuff but ultimately, it is what it is, and smt4a is medicore in its story. mostly, i liked the massacre ending.
atleast the gameplay is fun, that's kind of all that matters i guess

    the persona-tier plot and characters
not that megaten was known for its top tier writing outside of few games, but they still managed to reach a new low

    4A is a flanderization of 4.
The combat and QoL may have been a step up, but it fails everywhere else. Nanashi's character design says it all.

the companions are obnoxious, fricking awful and forced on you, so smtfans wrote it off as a shitty persona. And of course, personagays wrote it off as a shitty edgelord fantasy
it appealed to both crowds and failed because it contained the worst aspects of both

4A > 4. No contest. The gameplay is improved and bosses actually put up a fight, unlike 4.

IV:A was ok but the final two chapters have two of the most ridiculously long dungeons I've ever seen in a video game. I mean YHVH's universe looks cool and I understand that the scope of the game needs to literally take on biblical proportions in the build up to the fight against record scratch, but holy shit was it exhausting getting to the 4th Brane

For me, I hate how Nanashi is literally seethed up to be the most powerful, not only it's not deserved it's never feel like you are that powerful in the game either, it's kinda bullshit.
