Assuming the next Smash continues in the general trajectory Ultimate did when it came to representing as many series as possible, I have a gut feeling that the Microsoft-ActiBlizz purchase is probably going to be the deciding factor for Crash getting in, assuming MS and Nintendo's relationship doesn't strain. Both Banjo and Steve were included more-or-less as crowd pleasers and I'd imagine it might happen again with Crash and Doomguy.
In general I imagine that a lot of picks added to 6 are going to be characters popular during Ultimate's speculation cycle, that's pretty much the one consistent pattern in terms of Smash considering a lot of characters brought up during 4's speculation got into Ultimate or got some other content.

Yes, but the picture was a fanpoll with only about a few thousands people voting on it. For example, I doubt Chrom was the most voted character worldwide, but he was added due to fan demands according to Sakurai.
What this poll shows is that, even if the top spots are not exactly, correct, it did represent reality to what people wanted to an extent (Isaac, for example, was brought back as an AT due to fans demanding him back according to Sakurai, unfortunately not brought as a playable character.)

The day Robin and Lucina were revealed, when they ended up showing Rayman's trophy, people were so hyped, especially when Robin and Lucina kinda killed the Gematsu leak, but I suppose nowadays Rabbids are most likely to be the Ubisoft rep.

About the Gematsu leak?
Initially, even with Shulk, people considered it was dead because there was, of course, no Chrom and no Chorus Kids.
Then later on, when Sourcegaming did some datamining, they did find some shit relating to a potential Rythm heaven rep and/or stage, as well as interviews about Sakurai mentioning that they never really have a set Pokemon in mind at the start (thus why it was simply named Pokemon from X & Y and not Greninja), as well as his initial idea for the FE rep to be Chrom.
So the safe conclusion for most people was that what the guy had was an early and rough list of new characters for the game, and it just so happened that most of the characters on the list did end up being added.
It's all speculation and we will never know the whole truth, but between Gematsu for Smash 4 and Vergeben for Ultimate, I believe Gemastu was the most likely to have real information.

Brawl was fair with Snake and Sonic. Base game for FOR with Megaman and Pacman, too. But then they added Ryu, Cloud and Bayonnetta and suddenly people only wanted third-party characters, with K. Rool and Ridley on the side. Ultimate's DLC now ended up setting the expectations way too high. Sora, Steve, Sephiroth, Kazuya, Banjo? Where do you go from there from a business point of view? I really hope it won't have shit like Goku or Luffy, third-parties already stole a part of what made Smash a Nintendo celebration with the occasional guest, but if they go this way we will lose the last bit of soul.
