Besides, Red and Gold are pretty over rated. If we had pure feats to go on Lucas and Dawn are the undisputed greatest Trainers in all the games and thats not even mentioning how Legends is actually canonical in the main line games, Not only did they deal with Modern age Dialga and Palkia and Arceus they both even went back in time and created the original Poke-dexs and dealt with Origin form D and P and even Giritina and Arceus too. Literally GOD of Pokemon personally chose them all of all trainers including Red and Gold to go back in time and fix everything.

If they'd swtiched protagonists in the anime when they should have (after Advanced), you'd probably have been able to. Red was promoted in gen 2 partially because of his connection to Ash. Nobody knew at the time that Ash would be forced to lose all the time just to keep him on the show.

Because Red already cemented himself as the canon protagonist of GF's prime timeline of events before Leaf existed, which made his return in HGSS, B2W2 and Alola easy.
Same with Gold though since he was part of Gold and Silver before Crystal existed.
Kris was even replaced with Lyra while Gold wasnt in HGSS making it even more obvious that he's the main guy of those games.
Yet GF still hasn't made him or any other protagonist an npc in mainline Pokemon after the game they were playable in, so they're obviously keeping some degree of that roadblock in mind, further compounded with games like Hoenn, Sinnoh and Kalos where the opposite gender PC is a distinct NPC, which could create further confusion such as "hey, when did Rowan's assistant become champion and thwart Team Galactic's ambitions?"
Yeah the opposite npc issue could be what caused it since the BW trainers were included and they didnt use the opposite gender as an npc. Looks like HGSS might have screwed Gold/Ethan's chances since since he became an opposite gender NPC there.
