Souls series had 10+ years of turbofans to rely on for hyping it up, then they got Game of Thrones man to sign his name on it in order to attract the remainder of the fantasy nerds who weren’t sold on the series. Then it also happened to be a goddamn amazing game.

So, basically, it was the perfect storm of quality and marketing needed to make a blockbuster of a videogame.

      >The FromSoft brand is on the upward trajectory
      >The height of open-world hype
      >GRRM namedrop
      >Lack of info on the game for years only builds up the hype engagement
      >Aggressive marketing by Bamco
      >Tail end of Covid lockdown so even normies are still buying and playing video games as main activity
      >Lack of AAA competition at the time aside from that Horizon game
Essentially it came out at the right time with marketing and incredible luck.

      Marketing and shilling.
Normies operate under social conditioning and dont have opinions of their own. They will unironically watch paint dry and then claim it's an exhilarating and unsurpassed experience as long as they see enough TV interviews and Twitter advertisements telling them it is so. You can tell by the flood of reddit homosexuals on this site that are claiming Rollslop 7 is the "game of the decade".

ER had less marketing than Lords of the Floppen

the dark souls trilogy has shipped 35 million copies which makes it an average of 11.6 million copies per title, before botw the best selling zelda game was twilight princess at 8 million

dark souls is also a more commercially successful franchise than kingdom hearts, metal gear solid, devil may cry, nier or kirby, fromtrannies still thinking it's a niche series for le elite when every twitch prostitute plays the games and kotaku and polygon shower them with praise is absolutely baffling

Because it's not that hard and Spirit Summons were very strong
This was all intentional. They wanted to remove the 'BREBARE TO DIE :DDD' reputation that they had given themselves because they thought it was potentially costing them sales, and they were entirely right to think that, because it was.
For what it's worth, I think making Spirit Summons a thing is a much better measure than a lot of what they could have done to make it accessible. Like, between that and adding an easy mode, I'll take Spirit Summons any day of the week, since it doesn't dilute the intended experience nearly as much.

Right now I am playing Horizon Forbidden West and every single enemy is as aggressive as a Rune Bear. The rollspam is insane. It's basically what anti-Souls Black folk claim the franchise to be. And Horizon is supposed to be a cinematic Snoy movie-game.

Dark Souls and Elden Ring are not as hardcore as people think. Any random kid who played nu God of War, Monster Hunter and Fortnite would be able to handle it. Elden Ring also has a million ways to make the game easier.

Souls games being hard was always a meme. They don't handhold like many other games but they are not about being hard.Their popularity mainly comes from the atmosphere and indirect story telling.

Zanzibar's Flamberge is one of the most iconic swords of the game. It's not viable for competitive builds but people keep using it because it has a cool design and is tied to a great boss battle.

Fromsoft built their reputation over a decade and their games have been gaining wide popularity from demons souls onward. Latest at DaS3 they already hit the mainstream.
You can always argue nitpickily about if their games are truly unique, but it is a fact that they spawned its own genre of soulslike games trying to capture their signature flair.
So it wasn't really a surprise. And of course the edgy take is that their games are shit, but besides DaS2 they have delivered every time.

Souls games aren't hard, never have been, almost from day one it was a game journo meme that got perpetuated for marketing/shitpost reasons. Elden Ring got big because it's a well-produced fantasy game and people like those

How the frick do people even figure out the side quests in these fricking games ? I've played every single one of them twice, second playtrough with a guide and they are confusing non-sense and overly complicated bullshit.

You cannot make me believe people figured out Blaidd was standing on that random ass cliff or that Nepheli was under the bridge. Nobody remembered what some random ass looking NPC said 30 hours ago why won't they give us a dialogue log or quest log or some shit ?

You don't then you look up a wiki for the second playthrough. The least they could do is have them leave a soapstone message at their last location giving a hint at where they went

        Anonymous

Yeah when i saw Varre do it early on I thought it would be like that the whole game. But I believe it is the only time they do it.

Even looking at Wikis and spoilers, you can still easily mess things up.

      >You cannot make me believe people figured out Blaidd was standing on that random ass cliff
I did Ranni's quest without help, yes. He said he'd be down the well, that significantly narrows down the options for where he can be. Not that you even had to talk to him on that random ass cliff for the quest to progress.
      >Nobody remembered what some random ass looking NPC said 30 hours ago
If someone tells you they'll meet you down the well that's not fricking filler you let go in one ear and out the other. Yes, people remember things they're told which are clearly important. Maybe you're just fricking moronic?
