No matter how good the gameplay and story was, the reused assets still hurt them more than help them due to the it having no conections to the BotW, too much wasted potential to ignore.
This, BotW was so huge that any hype TotK could have had was already 80% burnt out years ago. Making BotW+ isn't going to ignite the same kind of excitement and hype.

Majoras mask is literally just reused assets from OOT and its the best zelda game by far
A few considerations about this:
1) Majora's mask indeed didn't rile people up remotely close to what Oot did. It was the dark sheep for many years even though it was excellent.
2) Majora's mask did offer a brand new world to explore in a series about adventuring and exploration, even if many assets were the same.
ToTK was very good on its own merits, but it didn't know what kind of relation it had with BotW as a sequel, and reusing the same overworld with such a similar gameplay loop really hurt the experience. I deeply appreciate the new mechanics, and particularly i think the fuse mechanic for weapons is 300 IQ genius idea. But it was still about shrines and towers in the same neighbourhood as Botw.

i say it every thread i see: the fusion/crafting system/weapon durability is a tedious chore, the aesthetics of the game are subversive and off putting (dudes with heavy mascara, links goat arm complete with long ass finger nails), and the plot is a mess. it feela like this was put out by a skeleton crew b team with insane marketing behind them to net an easy 10 mil while the main team works on switch 2 zelda.
botw was good, this was not.

I don't think it's been forgotten at all. But it has replaced/merged with BotW in people's minds so it does feel like the second part of a very long movie.
