For me its because it came out after skyrim and I couldn't see how skyrims sluggish combat could be remotely fun in an mmo, especially for something like raids, what kind of mechanics could the dragonborn haul is fat ass out of the way of? If it had come out after oblivion in some parallel universe I probably would have been on board. Skyrim is better than oblivion overall but yeah.
>single-player games where you could make yourself into an unstoppable overpowered juggernaut of ridiculousness
vs >mmo where you gotta be nice and balanced and play well with others

i have over 1000 hours in ESO. You will never get into a good raid group that can do end level content unless you sucked the clan leader's wiener 100 times. The one time I completed a PUG raid in hardcore or whatever was years ago in like Maw of Lorka whatever the frick it is and it took like 6 hours. Also one time I was in ethereal traders union and I quit the game and came back and then they let me in again because I actually sold shit and made them a fricking profit so I just got VIP access to the clan. ESO is full of game mechanic abusers in PVP and honestly 1v1's in the PVP area is fun but takes too long
>go back to play the latest expansion after 3 years gone >play for a single day >character is banned because someone reported it for a bad name >have to change name >used that character since launch with no problems before stopped playing
microsoft really did a number on bethesda
character was an argonia named: looks-under-skirts
TES is a franchise made unique by the fact that you can interact with the environment in ways other games didn't, and the vast amount of freedom the game gives the player. MMO's just can't deal with that, so it's objectively certain an online version of the same game is going to be a downgrade.
That said, it wasn't a flop. It was one of the most popular MMOs at the time.
In terms of "active population" ESO was the 4th most played MMO from 2015 to 2017. Then it went 5th until 2020. Leaving the top 10 in 2022.
That's about 5 years being on the top 5 most played MMOs. Far from a flop.
Yup, still number 1
I'd say FFXIV is the 2nd most played, since Diablo 4 and Destiny are not MMORPGs, though it's hard to come up with decent rankings. Every site seems to be using their own criteria on "population". Pic related shows the total amount of players I think. Yet the "active players" list, puts WoW as the 1st most played MMORPG, tied by FFXIV. (ignoring OSRS).
Then we got games like Lost Ark, Guild Wars 2, Black Desert Online, and ESO isn't that far below.
At this point i'm convinced that Blizzard could mass ban every single player, delete all of their inventories, call them each individually by name a fricking Black person/jew/asiatic and 100 million of them would STILL come back to play WoW the next day, even if the EULA says "We get to violently rape you in real life." >Cue white women signing up en masse
they wanted to eat thatched roofing, and tumble into paradise at the thought of it it ruined a lot of lore and was more than a bit ridiculous, also you had to keep paying FOREVER in order to play
>AWFUL fricking combat that the community refuses to let the devs fix >Shitty engine made for the ps4 >awful optimization >Endless level progression, you will literally never catch up if you start today >awful combat
I was so disappointed when they revealed Necromancer class and it turned out that every summon is just VFX >here is your button to "summon a skeleton and make him attack", but basically it acts same as nightblade burst skill >here is your button to "summon a skeleton archer and make him attack for 5 seconds", but basically it acts same as nightblade dot skill
They say it costs them next to nothing to keep the servers up, yet its still a gigantic fricking game with 4 expansions of content to do. Nearly everything can be solod and the 20 people that still play the game are really helpful to new players.
It has the worst combat of any mmo.
It has shitty builds and itemisation.
The clans and trading situation is extremely offputting.
The levelling experience now that they've removed it is nonsense.
It's worth spending a bit of time with though because the stories and the world are nice to explore and you can mostly ignore all the mmoisms.
It doesn't have an original soundtrack made by Beyoncé
It's still going innit? I wouldn't say it's a flop. If somehow I ever felt like playing an MMO again I would probably pick ESO.
For me its because it came out after skyrim and I couldn't see how skyrims sluggish combat could be remotely fun in an mmo, especially for something like raids, what kind of mechanics could the dragonborn haul is fat ass out of the way of? the combat is probably the best part of ESO.
Art style is what kills the game for me, all the armour and gear is so fricking ugly.
Why does this imperial port city exist thousands of years before Tiber Septim existed?
(Me)
it's more of an outpost, and ESO is more like 500 years before Tiber Septim, but the question remains.
because fanwank nostalgiabait
It's an MMO
this game hasn't been a mmo for probably 6 years
>single-player games where you could make yourself into an unstoppable overpowered juggernaut of ridiculousness
vs
>mmo where you gotta be nice and balanced and play well with others
hm
it's still the 3rd most popular MMO

It didn't?
it's Ganker so "thing I don't like = flop" no matter what the reality is

Games run by Zenimax. You can have Codsworth and Vasco refer to you by obscenities
Doesnt it take place in the 1st era or something? Why would places look the same like 500 years earlier, especially a small village like seyda neen?
near 4 million active player base in the last 30 days. is that a flop? i have no concept since i don't play mmo trash made in the last 13 years.

for like... two months?

wtf. I'm really, really out of the loop when it comes to mmos. I thought eso is number #2 after wow. Is wow even #1 anymore?
Yup, still number 1

I will never believe any numbers putting wow at the top
I think Destiny is number one. If you count that as an MMO.
they wanted to eat thatched roofing, and tumble into paradise at the thought of it
it ruined a lot of lore and was more than a bit ridiculous, also you had to keep paying FOREVER in order to play
Was it? Anyway it's boring as frick, it's only TES in the name. Under the hood it's a generic MMO.
Hero Engine.
>you must attack weave every skill press in your rotation
>AWFUL fricking combat that the community refuses to let the devs fix
>Shitty engine made for the ps4
>awful optimization

>that the community refuses to let the devs fix
they can't fix it lol
>awful optimization
lol wat
its 9 years old and runs on fax machines

You've never stepped foot into cyrodiil or you're trolling.
>You've never stepped foot into cyrodiil
nobody does lol, zos abandoned it years ago
discount world of warcraft gameplay w/ level scaling in a mmo
Oh and they intentionally made necromancer trash to sell the new schollar job- I mean the Arcanist.
I was so disappointed when they revealed Necromancer class and it turned out that every summon is just VFX
