Why was the FF13 trilogy so disliked? Each game was thoroughly different and the sequels at the very least improve on the gameplay shortcomings of FF13. I really like the Paradigm System, and I think it’s misunderstood and belittled as a result. The aesthetics of these games feel thoroughly Final Fantasy (the series has always had an interesting mix of sci-fi from the beginning), playable cuties, the Crystarium is straightforward but doesn’t exist on its own, it’s used in conjunction with the paradigm deck to allow for custom strategies and builds for any/every situation. It’s a fun active strategy game

It's boring as frick. Takes far too long to become enjoyable.
Yeah that’s just 13 but I’m talking about the trilogy. 13-2 feels half as long as 13 and it hasn’t felt like a slog. Im currently playing through 13-2 on ps3 hardware cause the PC port is unplayable levels of bad
>Yeah that’s just 13
No it's not it's all of them. They all have ridiculously long introductions, too many tutorials and basic combat for extensive periods of time
13-2 pretty much throws you right into it and tells you to Read The Primers if you want more. Even with the Pokemon mechanic they just throw it all at you and you just build your party. 13 took legit 24 hours until the gameplay tutorial ended and you were allowed to freely customize your party.
Once you kick off the adventure with Noel I think the game is open, each member has at least 2/3 roles (depending on which Crystarium Expansions you chose) in addition to the Monster party member
what fricking tutorial you dumbass. 13-2 and lightning returns throws you to the wolves and lets you roam at the beginning. You never played the games

Play it on an Xbox Series S/X because Microsoft actually went through and dramatically improved the trilogy's performance over the 360 versions
I have a Series S but I lent it to a friend. It’s a wonderful little console for digital backplats cause of enhancements. The PC port for FF13 ran perfectly fine personally
13 PC also received the post-release fixes by microsoft but 13-2 & LR did not. Even with mods those games run like shit and are crash prone.
13 was horrible
Game opens up way too late iirc
yeah it literally takes 17 FRICKING hours to get to Gran Pulse
Perfect storm of anti-japan sentiments by the industry at the time, the huge push for open world rpg design, the English voice director acting in opposition to what the original work was, and early YouTuber culture making for an easy target.
In retrospect, it's fine. It's not terrible, it's not great, it's just middle of the road. And for some, that's worse than it being terrible.
Also it takes 20 hours for things to open up.
Why would I play the sequels if I didn't like the first one?
First impressions matter.
Cause they made 2 mainline sequels
I'm not gonna waste my time or money on a sequel to something that I dislike. That's big consoomer behavior.
I don’t mind buying a game years later at a steep discounted price to see what I think about it. Is it consuming? I’m just gaming
Because the second one is an actual contender for best turn based JRPG on 7th Gen consoles.
And the third one is pretty decent.
Literal case of the first one being the worst of a trilogy.
First one was pretty shit, so no one bothered with the sequels.
Especially since the last FF "sequel" wasn't well received either (X-2)
Its kind of changing, I've met so many zoomers that were kids during the lightning trilogy and they unironically love those games.
Only thing I remember from that era was how much of a homosexual lord that one director was, the one that was in love with lighting n shit and Ganker constantly shitting on him.
if lighthings flat ass was introduced now folks would call it troony shit funny enough.
personally, I never made it pass the pope boss in 13, couldnt give a frick to play more till it opened up.
>be me, 25
I started with FF5, Love 8, 9, 12 and I’m not really a fan of FF7 and 8, but wow Do I absolutely adore the gameplay of the 13 trilogy having played each of them. Had FF13 on the 360 and it was something so special

out of curiously, any reason you skipped X? if liked the 13 games you would unironically enjoy X.
Just haven’t gotten to it. I own the X/X-2 HD Remasters so that’s on me, but I’ve heard they are pretty linear and that’s not really a bad thing. There’s plenty of grand scale FF titles, a linear adventure isn’t always a bad thing
I hope you play it some day, anon.
its worth experiencing at least once.
FF13 was a step back in every way from FF12 as far as the gameplay and freedom is concerned. Why would you play sequels of a shit game?
I have no idea how square enix survived making Lightning Returns. This was only a few years after 14's initial release almost sank the company, and only a few months after A Realm Reborn began salvaging 14, and then they release fricking LIGHTNING RETURNS?
Lighting returns was made by the Valkyrie profile devs.
maybe SE was like whatever since most of the staff was on FF15
>Why was the FF13 trilogy so disliked?
Because the games were shit.
Reminder that if you like the current VII games, you have XIII to thank for it.
VII is even more dull than XIII
i could finish XIII without stopping
XVI i had to force myself through and it was painful
VII i didn't make it through at all
I platinumed every single one of these games and they are all shit. 13>13-2>LR
LR is not even Final Fantasy
the trilogy is mostly disliked by people who didn't play it.
13 was the boring game but the trilogy as a whole is good.
most people just stopped after 13 and wrote it off.
