Because they had inredible atmosphere, fun gameplay, music & sound by dreamworks, a pretty advanced enemy a.i. at the time and quite nice graphics on PS1. I was blown away when I played them back in the day. MOH games on PS1 have so much soul.

      This
They made it less “hurr muh high score” and more a grand war movie that you get to play a part in

Been trying this out recently and the control scheme is a bit brutal, I understand the historical context of fps controls on a controller at the time but goddamn - they were so close to the standard. Frontline was the first one I played and I still play it every year or so.

Use the dpad, analog controls are not the best. Dpad and shoulder buttons to strafe is where its at, with the manual button for crosshairs. The game was built around it, enemies reaction times and actions have been created to rhythmically coexist together with it.
Frontline is a better game only in terms of graphics, PS1 games do everything else better.

You can use a modern control scheme
      It's 3rd or 4th

      t. Alien Resurrection revolutionized FPS controls gay.
Go to the options screen and choose the dual analog setting.

As someone who played a shit ton of MoH back in the day: they weren't. They were mediocre shooters at best during the time where every shooter was WW2 for some reason. It's the nostalgia.

I think we’re talking about the early titles (Frontline and prior). During the mid 90s to about 02, wwii fps was still new territory
Of course by 2007 it had run its course and they were still making MoH games

Medal of Honor Allied Assault is one of the best ww2 shooters ever, I insta bought it as soon as it was available on GoG. I also played a lot of Medal of Honor Heroes on the PsP. Best FPS on PsP!

      >Best FPS on PsP
      That doesn't mean much
Playing these games with one analog stick and face buttons felt awful

The PS1's graphical aesthetic is perfect for ww2 themed games.
Panzer front is another great ww2 game.

They came out at the tail end of 1999 so they had some benefit of hindsight but in terms of modern competence they were basically a cut above everything else on the system. If you had a first gen dualshock you could play it exactly like a modern shooter, and even without that the dpad controls were basically the best you could expect.

The games were neat for their time but Call of duty made them obsolete

      >Call of duty made them obsolete
not really, the PS2 ones came before call of duty, which was more of the same, also brothers in arms, thecod went all timesplitters with its fast paced multiplayer, it wasnt original and it wasnt new, then they went all futuristic fake and gay.

It’s true that when COD 1 and 2 came out MOH felt old, but replaying them now? I like MOH way better. COD tried to be realistic but compared to modern realistic shooters it falls so short. Meanwhile Medal of Honor is not even remotely realistic, it’s basically Unreal/James Bond in WW2 and it’s damn good at it. It’s a way more difficult and rewarding single player experience

do u mean the psx moh's compared to cod?, i was talking about frontline/rising sun, but the psx moh, yeh quite james bond, but still great. last moh i played was vanguard on ps2, it had more of a realistic cod vibe but i liked it, dont think anyones mentioned it yet

I’m talking about the pc ones. Allied Assault and the expansions (breakthrough and spearhead) they are excellent. Also airborne is super underrated. I enjoyed that game too

              >Allied Assault
I heard this was good and I was pretty mixed on it. Really robotic AI and tinny popgun shooting.

It's still more fun to shoot people in those games than in Frontline and COD1/2. Enemies react to being shot, they contort and stagger bac, even the basic b***h pistol makes you feel like you are firing a nailgun. Later MOHs never bothered with this, even Allied Assault's enemies just drop like a sack of potatoes.

Yeah what the frick happened with that in games? Is it just too much work to program so developers don't bother animating "hit" reactions for enemies? I can't even think of any modern shooters that have that feature.

RDR2 definitely has it, so does TLOUII even if it’s a shite game. Most devs don’t want to be bothered animating all that so they just have them ragdoll out, make a bunch of gurgling sounds into a microphone and call it a day. Especially since most of the best shooters these days are done by indie devs, the original MOH had Spielberg money behind it so they could take the time to do that.

My favorite in the psx MOH was where they’d fall back and keep shooting and sometimes hit their buddies

The music, the low draw distance and the compressed bit crushed sound of the ps1 made it feel “old” in a cool way. The control scheme makes if a bit hard to play these days though. Allied Assault and its expansion packs on the other hand are still excellent games. I played through them last year and loved every minute of it. There’s something about not having ADS or regen health that makes it a better experience imo. It’s basically an unreal twitch shooter with ww2 assets and kickass music

Pacific Assault is a mediocre shooter (Vietcong is better in every imaginable way) but its still serviceable and way way better than Rising Sun which was straight up shovelware.
And thematically jungles make for a boring game
