Why would a Lawful Neutral character go on an adventure instead of guarding a town or doing taxes all day?

Why would a Lawful Neutral character go on an adventure instead of guarding a town or doing taxes all day? And no, having a superior order them to solve the plot/tardwrangle the party is a cheap answer.

Why do you feel that lawful neutral characters lack the motivation of other alignments?

Because he views himself as the bulwark against anarchy or a greater evil? He is the self-appointed guardian of law, order, and civilization. Why wait for the barbarians to be at the gate when he can take the fight to them or go out and strike at the heart of the hoard?

He could also just be a lawful treasure hunter. Or whatever the frick.
It's a stupid question, and OP should feel stupid.

Op I am dumb founded by your question. Do you even ttrpg?
The simple answer is to look at the 5e background (because everyone knows you are taking about 5e here) So here we go.
    Acolyte
    >Tradition. The ancient traditions of worship and sacrifice must be preserved and upheld. (Lawful)
    >Power. I hope to one day rise to the top of my faith's religious hierarchy. (Lawful)
Okay you are adventuring because you want your faith to be maintained or climb the ranks and adventuring is good way to do that
    >Aspiration. I seek to prove myself worthy of my god's favor by matching my actions against their teachings. (Any)
Not really a superior order more of a act of trying to get a superior to look at you instead
    Athlete
    >Growth. Lessons hide in victory and defeat. (Any)
I want experience and adventuring is a good way to do that.
    Charlatan
    >Aspiration. I'm determined to make something of myself. (Any)
    Self explanatory

There are taxes outside the town left uncollected for the LN character to go and reclaim.

These aren't philosophies these are moral convictions. Lawful means you adhear to a strict code that you didn't write yourself, such as a religious code or adherence to civic law, and neutral reffers to the willingness to harm innocent people in very hyper-specific contexts.

For example, the in the revised trolly problem the lawful neutral character wouldn't pull the lever. The trolly has to reach its destination, and his inaction is just letting nature continue as it was even if it means five people die from his inaction. A lawful good character would devise a plan to pull the people off the tracks, while a lawful evil person would get the people off the tracks but force them to repay him less they be put back.

One of my characters was a Lawful Neutral architect that wanted to live his whole life constructing buildings. Until he was (wrongly, he says) accused of setting fires to buildings. Now he's on the adventure of running from authorities and having a vendetta against his accusers.

Tell me about this characters personality first. Be speficic. No, dont tell me about the alignment. I want the personality. Go ahead. You do make people, right? Individuals instead of alignment robots? Im listening. Where does he come from? What are his goals and aspirations in life? What are important events in his formative years? What other people have influence on him?

nta but sometimes it's fun to play alignment robots that are literally robots

It's a cheap answer, but it makes the most sense. Other reasons for an LN to go adventuring could include a debt they're owed, or a loved one in danger. Or plain old self preservation. If a tribe of orcs are threatening to rape all the women in town, the LN dude has a viable reason to confront them.

Reminder that alignments are cosmic and meant for planar beings and outsiders, not for random mortals humans, elves and dwarves.

One of the basic pre-requisites for making a D&D character is "they are willing to work with the party and go on an adventure". If you do not meet this requirement with your character, you don't get to play.

    >be aspiring monk from the temple of the amber tiger
    >follow the laws of the realm im in
    >im no criminal and do not aspire to do so
    >also follow a personal code of single act of good can change the world, help the downtrodden and lead by example and be humble and introspective
    >if push comes to shove, im willing to compromise on the codified law of the local realm to follow my conviction

      >forgotten realms
      >be Figher of the Order of the Gauntlet
      >believe in honor above all, like the knights in stories
      >go on quests to do noble deeds
      >be willing to break the law if its the honorable thing to do
      >acknowledge the partys rogue is, as its core, a noble soul, even if misguided by the life that was thrust upon him
      >try to push that side within him during our adventures

They need money and lack other options that are as quick.
They see it as their duty.
They have nothing better to do as their previous life was destroyed.
They need social status to achieve something.

    >why would a chaotic neutral character go on an adventure instead of doing literally anything else at random
    >why would a lawful good adventure go on an adventure instead of advocating for political change or donating wealth to a private charity
    >why would a true neutral adventure do anything except stay home and jack off
perhaps it's because RPG player characters are supposed to be more than a reductive summary of a single trait on their sheet
