He's the God of Murder so he also stops murder attempts on you and in these worlds, murdering people is also pretty useful. Bane is good if you want power but you're entering a dangerous fricking game of way more egomaniacal buttholes plotting versus one another constantly and whatever power you have to be a dick will then spawn like 9 billion more buttholes to try and outdick you because you're a tyrant, you breed people who want to be tyrants. You spawn your opposition inherently, and infinitely power Bane because he's just a spawner of tyrants and rebellions and power hunger.
Myrkul is fricky because its Myrkul. You have to be a weirdo to really do the death scene, most shit associated with death literally and figuratively stinks, and if you're not a super arcane person to do necromancy, you're basically a permanent scene kid except you're constantly dealing with death, being creepy as frick and for the most part don't get much out of it unless you're basically a champion of capital D Death. Myrkul isn't the only guy who's Death, there's lots of death gods, but he's definitely one of the stranger and potentially more dickish ones versus shit like Urogalan for example.
So yeah, being able to murder and prevent your murder (very common in fantasy settings) is usually more useful and easy than trying to achieve structural power (very difficult, makes new opponents) or worshiping Death (mostly impractical and fricking wierd, even by most wizard standards and such)

You're misunderstanding pretty hard so let me make this a little clearer.
Myrkul cults don't really make a lot more Myrkul cults by being Myrkul cults, you somewhat have to be attuned to the death and shadow shit and even if they proselytizer, they don't gather much steam, but at the same time they don't really infight much and they don't spawn Paladins slaughtering gravekeepers by existing. They don't create their opposition by being death dealers, and can actually be very useful in some situations by dealing with death well.
Bhaal gets worship from murderers and from those to be murdered, so he's empowered by both, but his cult is a lot more competitive. When you murder someone you don't make more opposition for you however short of making a revenant, so you make your thing and you usually group up with a very internally infighty situation but you don't make enemies by being a Bhaalite. You kill people primarily, you might get some opposition but no anti murderer squads spawn either when you worship. Murder doesn't really make more murderers.
Bane gets worship and grants power to despots, rulers and more which inherently desire to oppress, humiliate and create strife in positions of power. His worship and the actions of his followers inherently create situations where there's going to be power hunger and other tyranny, either by the good or the evil agaisnt one another, be it a paladin of good slicing down the wicked or another despot to be in fantasy north korea. But you make these people by being a despot, as you pressure people into rebellions and into oppressing others by rule and force, being tyranical to one another in cycles, coveting the throne or positions of authority as you do so, even being a minor despot. You create infinite conflict and infinite revolutions with abuse of power. You always create the opposition inherently as you wish to be a ruling class ruler who's also an abuser.

Homeless, regular joes and janes, people nobody cares about and so on are easier to get rather than the first heir which is the only child of the kingdom. Unless bhall tells you to really go after a certain pair of c**ts you're kind of just doing serial killer shit and well, that's in a fantasy setting, life here is cheap and plentiful and people going missing or going AWOL is very common.

From what I'm seeing in this thread, OP has a hard time grasping the concept of religion. A cult of worship is not a social club, it is a gathering of people who worship a certain something or someone. People don't join for a beneficial transaction with a deity, they do so because they have a staunch belief in a particular ideal, in this case, Bhaal's cult worships ritualistic murder and they just like killing people. They don't care about benefits, they don't care about power, they care about fricking murder and blood because that's what they like.
The idea of "this god gives me this" or "this god gives me that" comes from modern audiences who are detached from the concept of faith and see a god through metagame lenses and the mechanical benefits to their builds.
You're projecting a christian understanding of religion on a polytheistic world. People before christianity unironically worshipped gods in a "tit for tat" fashion, you didn't believe in the gods as ideals but rather like beings powerful beyond human imagination who you could pester for favors in exchange for prayer and sacrifice.

It's a good point, but in a world where gods are real, known, grant boons to their followers, and essentially dictate their devout follower's lived experiences through severe religious constraints, I think it would be natural for people to consciously make decisions about which god is best to dedicate their lives to. There would likely be a set of gods that resonate with your values to different degrees, which you would then consciously compare to find the god that suits you best, rather than it just being like 'is Jesus in your heart or not'.
It is not a matter of faith to believe the gods are real, characters in the DnD setting have a vague understanding of the existence and works of their deities. They worship them and some characters receive powers due to their extreme zeal and the following of their deities' commands, these powers are given gradually and you still need to do rigorous religious rituals and works to spread the faith of your deity to maintain them.
If you have ever played a tabletop as a religious character and your character didn't actually believe in it's deity, then you played wrong. If you only played CRPGs then it's normal that you don't really understand that these characters need to be actively devout to use their powers, since most games just brush it off.

You need to carefully define believe in this sentence. There is conclusive proof that the gods exist in forgotten realms, so it's not like our religions where you believe your god is real. Instead, it's 'believing' in a god like you believe in a certain company that you want to work for; your aims and values align. A priest of Ilmater doesn't think that only Ilmater is real, or that Ilmater is more real than Lathander, they just align with Ilmater the most and so choose to worship them.

In this context, I'm using "belief" interchangeably with "worship". You can't play a religious character be it caster cleric or paladin without actually worshipping, loving, glorifying your deity and fearing their wrath. That should be a basic trait for a character who gets powers from a deity and they should strive to have a permanent connection with them as a conduit of their will in the world. If someone just happens to be part of their cult of worship without receiving direct aid, then they should still have cultural ties that make them follow certain rituals. (Going to church on sundays, resting during sabbath, etc.)

I think the best way to illustrate this would be to mention the "book of Job" and all the works that share the same themes. In most religions, people are tested for their faith. A weak believer equals to someone that could offend the gods, receive punishment and even end up in purgatory, so they do ritualistic sacrifices to appease them. If they were the cynical type they wouldn't do sacrifices at all or would just follow through with rituals due to cultural obligations.
In short, the point that I'm trying to make, is that it is stupid trying to come up with a logical reason for the cult of Bhaal and the benefits the members of their cult receive compared to others, when people that join do so because they just fricking love, love, LOVE killing, and the act of murder and desecration of sentient life is part of the process of worship. And also that gods are GODS not CEOs of "Bhaal Murder Company" which gives benefits if you are a murderer or "Bane's Political Corporation" which gives you a discount in influence spent over law enforcement control.

Myrkul is fricky because its Myrkul. Myrkul isn't the only guy who's Death, there's lots of death gods, but he's definitely one of the stranger and potentially more dickish ones versus shit like Urogalan for example.
So yeah, being able to murder and prevent your murder (very common in fantasy settings) is usually more useful and easy than trying to achieve structural power (very difficult, makes new opponents) or worshiping Death (mostly impractical and fricking wierd, even by most wizard standards and such)

Myrkul cults don't really make a lot more Myrkul cults by being Myrkul cults, you somewhat have to be attuned to the death and shadow shit and even if they proselytizer, they don't gather much steam, but at the same time they don't really infight much and they don't spawn Paladins slaughtering gravekeepers by existing. They don't create their opposition by being death dealers, and can actually be very useful in some situations by dealing with death well.
Bhaal gets worship from murderers and from those to be murdered, so he's empowered by both, but his cult is a lot more competitive. When you murder someone you don't make more opposition for you however short of making a revenant, so you make your thing and you usually group up with a very internally infighty situation but you don't make enemies by being a Bhaalite. You kill people primarily, you might get some opposition but no anti murderer squads spawn either when you worship. Murder doesn't really make more murderers.
Bane gets worship and grants power to despots, rulers and more which inherently desire to oppress, humiliate and create strife in positions of power. His worship and the actions of his followers inherently create situations where there's going to be power hunger and other tyranny, either by the good or the evil agaisnt one another, be it a paladin of good slicing down the wicked or another despot to be in fantasy north korea. But you make these people by being a despot, as you pressure people into rebellions and into oppressing others by rule and force, being tyranical to one another in cycles, coveting the throne or positions of authority as you do so, even being a minor despot. A cult of worship is not a social club, it is a gathering of people who worship a certain something or someone. People don't join for a beneficial transaction with a deity, they do so because they have a staunch belief in a particular ideal, in this case, Bhaal's cult worships ritualistic murder and they just like killing people. They don't care about benefits, they don't care about power, they care about fricking murder and blood because that's what they like.

It is not a matter of faith to believe the gods are real, characters in the DnD setting have a vague understanding of the existence and works of their deities. They worship them and some characters receive powers due to their extreme zeal and the following of their deities' commands, these powers are given gradually and you still need to do rigorous religious rituals and works to spread the faith of your deity to maintain them.
If you have ever played a tabletop as a religious character and your character didn't actually believe in it's deity, then you played wrong. If you only played CRPGs then it's normal that you don't really understand that these characters need to be actively devout to use their powers, since most games just brush it off.

In this context, I'm using "belief" interchangeably with "worship". You can't play a religious character be it caster cleric or paladin without actually worshipping, loving, glorifying your deity and fearing their wrath. That should be a basic trait for a character who gets powers from a deity and they should strive to have a permanent connection with them as a conduit of their will in the world. If someone just happens to be part of their cult of worship without receiving direct aid, then they should still have cultural ties that make them follow certain rituals. (Going to church on sundays, resting during sabbath, etc.)

I think the best way to illustrate this would be to mention the "book of Job" and all the works that share the same themes. In most religions, people are tested for their faith. A weak believer equals to someone that could offend the gods, receive punishment and even end up in purgatory, so they do ritualistic sacrifices to appease them. If they were the cynical type they wouldn't do sacrifices at all or would just follow through with rituals due to cultural obligations.
In short, the point that I'm trying to make, is that it is stupid trying to come up with a logical reason for the cult of Bhaal and the benefits the members of their cult receive compared to others, when people that join do so because they just fricking love, love, LOVE killing, and the act of murder and desecration of sentient life is part of the process of worship. Instead, it's 'believing' in a god like you believe in a certain company that you want to work for; your aims and values align. A priest of Ilmater doesn't think that only Ilmater is real, or that Ilmater is more real than Lathander, they just align with Ilmater the most and so choose to worship them.
Going back to the OP, someone who wants to cause problems could very well vibe with more than one of the dead three, and would consciously have to determine which one they want to dedicate themselves to...and that could include 'metagame' considerations like what kind of life you get to live by worshipping each one.

It's a good point, but in a world where gods are real, known, grant boons to their followers, and essentially dictate their devout follower's lived experiences through severe religious constraints, I think it would be natural for people to consciously make decisions about which god is best to dedicate their lives to. There would likely be a set of gods that resonate with your values to different degrees, which you would then consciously compare to find the god that suits you best, rather than it just being like 'is Jesus in your heart or not'.

The racial gods of evil have set their followers societies up in a way that drives them to worship them. Orcs are encouraged from birth to be violent and savage raiders, Drow are groomed to be backstabbing sadists, etc. They get them from the start.
Evil gods with a wider portfolio simply appeal to people's worst natures. Greed, hatred, lust, etc. Turning to them gets you boons and powerful allies in their cults and fellow power seekers.
Following an evil god is much preferable to not following any god. If you're a good person and don't show faith, you get fricked in the afterlife.
