Yup. Trying to replicate the humor in something like The Room is impossible. When someone is genuinely trying their hardest to make something great, but they’re just incompetent, and you can see it in the final product, it tends to be hilarious. Even look at King Kong Skull island and Gollum as recent turds where clearly the product they envisioned was nowhere near what they were capable of creating.

It's a very niche game riding off nostalgia of a so bad it's good entries of official Zelda games. I couldn't give a frick about arzette because characters like her are a dime a dozen now
200 reviews on Steam, so that's somewhere between 4000 and 10000 copies on that platform. Indie games tend to sell better on consoles though, from what I remember the ratio is somewhere between 1:10 to 1:20 so I'm guessing it at least sold 70-140k copies.
I bought it on Switch and had a fun time, but because it's Limited Run Games literally nobody is going to get a physical copy in the 3.5 years it'll take for them to finally start shipping them to their partnered Best Buy stores, and despite what you'd think there are a lot of people who still prefer buying games physically.

The thing is Arzette is being done by the person who made the CDi remasters for PC to make them playable. So at least he understands the games better than most and it's really a passion project more so than just a cash-in.
Just for that I'm going to support the game, I loved having a playable version of the two Zelda CDi games. And this will likely play just like those. Of course the unintentional humor of the originals will be intentional here but I'd say there's enough soul in the project.

The Cutscenes are by their design tryhard as they are callbacks to a meme, and probably will be used in YTP to some success I'd assume.
Unfortunately it's also exactly like the CDi games in the wrong ways, too. Namely, you can go to plenty many places, but the game expects you to tackle places in a specific order, since otherwise you won't have the necessary equipment or items. That was just the icing on the shit sundae with CDi, so why copy that sort of progression?

I think, and this could be wrong and i'm sure someone good with prompting dalle could probably do it faster, but the only real way to replicate this art style is with hand drawing. That's just the nature of Straight Ahead animation. Computer tools are great but they lead to focusing on the wrong things.

hell, even bad animation is still expensive and tedious compared to other mediums. someone who's just into the cd-i look for the so-bad-its-good ironic appeal probably never appreciated what an enormous effort they represented.
They weren't born and raised on a fine diet of Treasure Island and Soviet copies of western animation and thus think all cartoons look that way like the creators of the CD-I animation were.
Personally I like Adventures of Captain Wrongel better: it was surprisingly more ambitious with its weird cel animation considering it was released nearly a decade prior to Treasure Island. That’s not to say that Treasure Island isn’t a good film (it is and it inspired me to read the book, which is also great), but it’s apparent that the end of the Soviet Union began to take its toll on how ambitious animated films could be.
what's some good later-period soviet animation to check out? i only know a bit from the 50s & 60s with more of a UPA look
Armenfilm’s “Wow! A Talking Fish” and “In the Blue Sea, In the White Foam” are pretty good; the visuals are very trippy and really push the limits of animation. “The Vampires of Geona” and its sequels are also pretty cool, but it’s more of a science fiction cartoon that could be a useful source of inspiration if some madman were to make a “CD-i” sci-fi shooter.
As an aside, perhaps it’s my own personal bias speaking, but “Along the Road With Clouds” is one of my all time favorites, even if it’s just about a little tiger cub making some friends while on a walk with his Monkey friend; I feel like that’s also a reason why I like Diddy Kong Racing as a game, since many of the characters there remind me of the ones from the cartoon.
There’s loads of other cartoons, such as Gena the Crocodile, Leopold the Cat, and Adventures of Baron Munchausen, but they aren’t all too relevant.

Straight ahead is when you just animate and see where it goes. Often used for stuff like effects, like maybe water spakshes or similar, since it can be hard to plan keyframes for those ahead of time. Typically you kind of want to plan your animation ahead, by deciding keyframes or keyposes, so you know how a given action should flow.
Straight ahead animation is basically how you would animate using a flip book. You draw one picture at a time only going forward from the last drawing. How well your animation stays on model (doesn't melt and lose form) becomes a matter of your skill but the result is always interesting because you can do wild stuff easily like camera angle shifts and zooms, transformations, etc.
A lot of sakuga (the cool expensive animation) in anime is straight ahead animation, I don't think this point is emphasized enough.

I don't feel like he really got to flex his... artistic skills? here. It's just one small ziplining cutscene. The rotation looks decent but he really should've been put on more cutscenes, he does some excellent bizarre facial animation like his work for Bushworld Adventures.
The animation in this game is way too fricking stiff which is the exact opposite problem of CDi's animation where the characters were too all over the place.
Acting is also shit where CDi's voice cast was full of good hams.

The King just rocks a tasteful, minimalist crown that symbolizes the Triforce. His robe is fairly simple as well, certainly well-made and beyond the reach of the peasentry, but not overwhelmingly so.
His crystal goblet is probably the most splurgy thing he owns and honestly the dude deserves to own something really nice.

the only way this game could have worked is if they had resisted the millennial urge to force the joke as hard as humanly fricking possible. before YTP the CD-I zelda games weren't really considered funny, like people laughed at the cutscenes and voice acting but they were largely treated as garbage. it wasn't until people on youtube began fricking with them that the games became 'funny' and not 'garbage', and that was because of the effort of all the people making YTPs. nobody ever played CD-I zelda like 'oh man hahaha this shit is so fricking funny! i gotta keep playing just to see what happens next!' but the arzette devs appear to believe that was the case. so this is a game that was made bad on purpose with cutscenes that are bad on purpose by people who aren't funny, who don't understand what was funny about the thing they're trying to copy and which isn't suitable material for YTP, the thing which made the original funny to begin with. arzette is a joke told by an idiot, full of desperate nostalgia, signifying nothing.
What went wrong is that they didn't go the extra mile and have Arzette be an interactive YTP. The fact that guys like Jimmy Davis and Vinesauce worked on it but the end product is mostly free of glitches and shenanigans is a huge missed opportunity. There should have been an unlockable mode which scrambles the cutscenes, mixes sentences or fills the screen with effects, that would have made a lot bigger impact and inspired YTPs as well.
What's hilarious is that the microscopic amount of YTPs using Arzette have to include Zelda CDi and other memes to be funny, the game itself has next to nothing.
They had fricking WalrusGuy on this and all they had him do was animate Arzette on a zipline.

interesting insight of how the games where made, it makes sense why the animation was so weird, the guys where soviets.
Problem with Arzette that I can see is that the animators didn't understand that the overt fluidity of the CD-I animations is what made them uncanny. Link's face boils and bubbles when he talks like he's made of a fine jell-o. Zelda's face routinely changes proportion and shape when it zooms and pans.
And the thing is: I think the only way to replicate this art style is to be a designer in a slavic country around the time the wall fell because most slavic animation just looks like this. That's how they did things behind the iron curtain. Trying to replicate it but not replicating the loving animation just results in something that is missing a lot of the humor that the animators themselves were aware of.
