This franchise used to be part of their pop culture like Sailor Moon, Godzilla or Gundam. It isn't anymore. Can Final Fantasy ever become culturally significant to Japan again?

who cares?
I always figured FF4 was the super popular SFC one in Japan. Is this not counting the sales from the other versions it got like Easytype?
"retail launch sales"
so yes it's excluding other releases
the "LE FF4 IS POPULAR IN JAPAN" meme is perpetuated by ass blasted morons who like 4 more than 6, it was never true
Where's FF 1 and 2? Why does Rebirth same release date as 16?
grim
i think its over for real this time. this looks dire
that last good ff game was 12
At some point, a whistleblower is going to have to expose the actual number of PS5's sold. I don't even remotely believe the current sales numbers.
Shit, you're honestly right. They've got to be lying about the PS5 sales numbers in Japan. They're probably closer to what the sales of Rebirth have been in Japan. Sony plays dirty. I love the 3rd party thriving that occurred on the PS1 and PS2 and I respect that, but I absolutely Sony.
13 was the tipping point
13 doesn't have towns, the story is told in an engaging way, but it has amazing music and art direction.
Nope. FF12 killed the franchise. It took them 5 years to develop and it was a fricking disastrous single player MMO for autistic homosexuals.
Didn't Final Fantasy XIII sell like 1 MILLION ON LAUNCH in Japan? They used to feen for this like it was crack n sheeeeit.
I'm nostalgic for Final Fantasy XIII. Why couldn't they just make a couple towns in the game? HOW HARD COULD THAT HAVE BEEN?!
FF development cycles have been disastrous since 13.
15 has at least one city, and you don't really do anything in it, or so I've heard.
*since XII
world building was mega hot dogshit
>start off in cutscene at the moron size megalopolis
>do a ring around the rosy of the country
>a single fricking town along the way
>royal docks are at the end of the line
>spend maybe an hour in not venice doing hardly anything interesting
>last bit takes place at beginning city
FF development cycles have ALWAYS been disastrous. Square's development cycles in general are a shitfest.
If it's not on Switch or Smartphones then Japan doesn't care. If anything they are an irrelevant region to gaming. Most of their own game developers now rely on the west to actually make it since Japan don't buy shit other than gacha trash on smartphones or shitty Nintendo Switch games. They literally don't matter, especially when it comes to the games that Gankerermins care.
>shitty Nintendo Switch games
Salty
> They literally don't matter, especially
the second largest market for console games, especially per capita spend
Nintendo cannot save FF tbh. The damage has been done and is irreparable unless some serious concessions are made and a signal sent to the consumers.
Warcraft died after WoW.
Final Fantasy died after XI.
Are you essentially saying Square needs to.... apologize?
No, that is not a concession or a signal. They need to fire many people and permanently remove the MMOs from the mainline. Shutting down the services is obviously a given.
>Warcraft died after WoW.
>Final Fantasy died after XI.
No, MMO cancer is unstoppable in its devastation. FF VII is the only surviving relic of the franchise.
no. Dragon Quest mogs it
No because Square themselves doesn't care about making FF appealing to the japanese anymore. They want gaijin money
>make -the- turnbased rpg games franchise
>decide to make it the games the opposite genre of that for future games
>sales plummets and fan retention drops
Are they moronic? Like seriously.
It's not even just that they decided the genre had to change. But the overlap between turnbased fans and action game fans, has always been extraordinarily low. So why?
they didn't make dragon quest
also the last turn based games they made were almost universally reviled, likely because they didn't let the guy who actually made the games what they are work on them (because he failed to salvage XII into a megahit after the original director had to quit because of the Japanese cold, and had to push the game out with only like 2/3rds of its story complete. Last game he got to work on was Dungeon Encounters)
XII was a megahit. It got rave reviews and sold 5 million copies. By all measurements it was a successful game. The truth is FF just isn't as unpopular as Ganker thinks. The only thing keeping it down is PS5 exclusivity when modern games need to be released on PC to be talked about. Elden Ring, Palworld, and Dragon's Dogma 2 show that.
>15 sold 10 fricking million
holy shit
That's what I've been saying too. You need a pc release to really get the ball going. Look at helldivers 2. It wouldn't of gotten nearly as popular if it was PS5 only.
no, impossible, landscape changed too much
Do you have any more vintage images like this?
Unfortunately, no. I found that one on an old IGN page covering the release of FFX in Japan: https://www.ign.com/articles/2001/07/19/final-fantasy-launches-in-japan
Happened to Sakura Wars too. That's just the breaks. Games are kinda lame now anyway no matter what it is.
>Happened to Sakura Wars too.
that one also a shit gacha and a shit reboot in the 2020s
How could it? They are targeting Western / global audiences instead
