You need to be able to manage both an economy and army and some of the best units in BW are casters. Couple that with unit control and APM absolutely does matter. Some grandpa legit doing 60 is not going to compete with some doing 240.
its true. However when I used to ladder I'd watch replays where my 50-120 apm was beating people at 200+ because they legit were just spamming not doing anything.
Happened a noticeable amount during the first year(s) of Wings of Liberty and playing Wc3.
Not sure about SCBW I didnt know what APMs were then.

WoL is a completely different game than BW. You absolutely need good APM to play BW decently.

There's literally a playlist on YouTube of a Zerg playing reaching S rank with 50 APM , literally not using his keyboard. You don't need APM at all, only top 20 players playing ASL need it.

That's why I'm talking about Brood War. I remember someone doing it in SC2 with using only marines though.

Hey moron, if you actually watched all of that series you would know that he starts using the keyboard and raising his APM as he goes up in rank, starting at C rank.

And if you watched it you would see that his APM never goes very high, literally less that anyone's in this thread. Ok moron? Read it slowly moron and find new excuse for being filtered.

>Ok moron?
you mad? sorry kiddo, you need to use the keyboard if you want to be anywhere near good. Even if you dont spamclick during the gathering phase.
>thread about any rts ever made >NOOO MUH ONLINE RANKED APM COMPETITIVE
you do know that there's more to these games than some fricking online ladder? lots of people play campaigns or just fool around in skirmish against bots or with friends
This. Ranked is all about memorizing build orders and asiaticclick, campaigns are real-time puzzle games. Far more enjoyable.
My biggest hope for Warcraft 3 Reforged was SC2-style co-op missions. Too bad what we got was 40 GB of garbage.
On the topic of SC2 co-op, what the FRICK where they thinking when they made this ability?
>plus it's dead genre.
It's not, it's just that the good games for the genre are still heavily played today.
AoE2 and Broodwar are immensely popular still.
The development of the genre, is kinda dead.
The playing of it, isn't.
>have to make inbetween game so WC3 was more time to cook >throw something together >players say it sucks >quickly revamp the artstyle and graphics, toss in some ideas you had of another game you cancelled >drop the best RTS ever in like 2 years and move on to warcraft 3
When it was being developed and shown off in early alpha, it was actually criticized for being "warcraft in space", it looked a lot like orcs v humans but with a twist.
So they changed the visual direction, it's more fair to say they took inspiration from a lot of sources instead of just WH40k, for instance half the Terran units quote Alien in some way

WC3 was supposed to be 3d but making a 3d engine took a lot longer than expected. SC was meant to be a game to fill in the hole, and it was mostly meant as a scifi game, not wh40k specifically. >Rob McNaughton, lead artist on the StarCraft II development team, joined Blizzard in 1996 shortly after this debut. It was a turbulent time - the team was rethinking the whole project, looking to start anew with a fresh look and feel. “At that time, there was another sci-fi game Blizzard had been playing around with called Shattered Nations,” Rob recalls. “It had just been cancelled, but it had a much grittier look than the previous Warcraft games, and, in many ways, birthed the new look of StarCraft.” >https://www.ign.com/articles/2018/12/03/20-years-of-starcraft-an-ign-retrospective

In this article one dev mentioned the ion storm RTS that was shown blew SC out of the water so hard graphically they were in full panic mode and shifted from the topdown WC2 view to the isometric view. That also fricked up the pathing so bad. The pathing (based on WC2) uses a checkerboard like movement system. You can see it when you build buildings (notice how the building squares dont line up with the angled ramps and cliffs) and when units move large distances.
They also used a bunch of art assets from shattered nations. You can also notice just how weird the artstyle is in the vSC cutscenes. Where you have those non-armored soldiers (in the amerigo cutscene) and the weird artillery gun (in the sceond protoss cutscene)
>I thought Starcraft started out as a Warhammer 40k game but they couldn't get the licensing or something
It's entirely false.
A myth spread based on something similar.
Warcraft 1 Orcs vs Humans, was meant to be a warhammer fantasy game.
Iirc it was long rumoured, and vaguely confirmed by a leak like 5-10 years ago.
Discussions with GW fell through, and they just made their own fantasy rts with orcs instead.
>APM centric compshit
>incel admitting he's bad with his fingers
200+ APM makes 99% of the people look like Artosis while playing. Why the frick would I want to go that perma-nerd?
>Artosis
he lives in a mansion in the middle of nowhere and raises Tastless' bastard kids. He's a lucky goy
APM is a meme, don't you notice the morons artificially inflating it by selecting and reselecting the same shit over and over and over?
You need to be able to manage both an economy and army and some of the best units in BW are casters. Couple that with unit control and APM absolutely does matter. Some grandpa legit doing 60 is not going to compete with some doing 240.

okay but just selecting shit over and over to pump your APM up is not managing econ and casters lol
eAPM is not a meme though.
>incel

absolute fav. or 4v4 no rush 15 min. just 200 man armies throwing everything they have at each other until one gives.

Pretty much all I do by now. Always on the look out for good WC3 custom campaigns.
This. Ranked is all about memorizing build orders and asiaticclick, campaigns are real-time puzzle games. Far more enjoyable.

>tfw no SCBW coop missions
When I saw that players just randomly clicked around to keep their APM up I knew the esport scene was a complete joke.
broodwar is the only game where keeping your APM up is a requirement, literally the only game
Holy shitter.
Playing BW made me appreciate pro-level BW even more. This ancient piece of shit being controlled at that level is inconceivable.
That said AoE2 is better and has a healthier community and ladder.
>AoE2 is better and has a healthier community and ladder
wrong on both counts
>wrong on both counts
You're spelling "right" wrong.
I've been called every slur and combination of slurs under the sun during AoE matches, even to this day.
thats what a healthy community does
You will be.

It already was.
No which is why nobody else came close, plus it's dead genre.

In terms of 1vs1 rts, maybe not.
I think AoE2 is better for 2vs2, 4vs4 and such.
Wc3 will never be topped when it comes to UMS.
AoE2 topped it hard
no
It was a different time. There's no way a game like this could be made by a big developer today.
