it's not surprising because they relied on arcade and xbox, they only ported a few titles to phones/steam/switch
they could easily roll in money and be able to rehire everyone they used to have, but they're terminally moronic or something
still waiting for that mushihimesama futari steam port, and others...
DDP, DOJ, Mushihimisama, Guwange, ESP De.Ra. are all sick as frick. But they made their games overwhelmingly weebish to the point where I can't stand the way they look.
It's a wonder why these type of morons continue going on this website when they're so scared of anime girls, it's baffling.

I never said "there was no anime girls" you stupid fricking disingenous mong. I don't have time to sit here and argue semantics with some ugly brown third world mutt.
Anime was a much, much smaller theme in shmups in the 80s and 90s, it was much more about military, space, fantasy, mecha, comedy, etc. with a small percentage even referencing anime at all, and usually it was just in cutscenes. Even "cute 'em ups" were not just a bunch of anime girls shooting bullets at other anime girls, it was a lot of wacky and over-the-top designs that contrasted with the tough as nails gameplay.
Compare that to the mid-late 2000s where it's just primarily cutesy moe tranime garbage.

SHMUPs are the easiest genre to make a game for. It's the lowest effort type of game. There's several indie shmups that have probably sold more than most Cave games.
They are very difficult to design properly. I've been learning a bit more about it, and it's not simple, especially for bullet hell style games. Action platformers are much easier to design in comparison.
cave shooters are memorable because of the visuals and music
it's really not hard to code all the gameplay mechanics, I have made danmakus, it's the art/music that is hard
SHMUPs are the easiest genre to make a game for. It's the lowest effort type of game. There's several indie shmups that have probably sold more than most Cave games.
It's easy to make shmups, but it's not easy to make good ones
the code's pretty simple, even as a codelet I figured it out
the bullet pattern design is hell
there are only some vague rules/logic to follow and it feels like pure trial and error to make one if it's your first time
also imo you've gotta be good at the genre to be able to make one game in it
>the bullet pattern design is hell
not really, mostly just firing at angles with timing control, and the bullets occasionally having different states like bursting or speeding up, or homing or whatever
and a lot of playtesting to adjust things into a tight level or bossfight
it's the ART that takes the longest
what you got there works, but it's not sellable
just compare to the bullet sprites in cave games
pic related already has 3-4 different bullet styles, and they're all animated sprites
and great sound and music is a must
without it, it's hollow
not to deny the importance of graphics/audio but they're a lot more straightforwards to make, changing a sprite and its color takes minutes
bullet patterns require some mixed form of abstraction, geometry that isn't very intuitive, and they're the core of your game so you can't skip on it
you can really bang your head for hours getting nowhere doing bullet patterns, and then on playthrough you'll realize you've fricked up royally because your pattern's too much fluff and can be dodged by just lightly tapping left/right
I could rip out any popular bullet hell's graphics, shove them in my "game" and it would still be bad because the fundamentals aren't there yet
Always wondered how STG developers were able to actually know if a challenge like Inbachi from SDOJ is actually possible to clear.

the way I have it, each pattern is going to be isolated into its own script, so I can just do some sort of practice mode where the game directly starts on that pattern, and playtest
then it's just stats, if every pattern is possible, the boss is in theory possible
I think a smarter dev might be able to do some form of analytical solution or program a bot to move a player character through a pattern, but that's too much effort and I'm not looking to do something insanely hard if I continue with this
is there a godot tutorial you're following?
no, I came up with the solutions myself
originally I wanted to use object pooling for perf concerns but simply limiting my game to only be able to delete X bullets per frame seems to work well enough
That's why he should get a dev team together that consists of him, an artist, musician and some play tester so he doesn't have to stress too much about it.
As someone with only a passing knowledge of SHMUPs, what makes Cave so special when compared to other developers?
No offense but when I look at footage of something like DoDonPachi it kinda just looks like every other SHMUP except with more bullets on screen.
They're like French Bread in the sense that they can only do one thing, but they do it well having developed their own artstyle and gameplay to go with it. Nowadays you don't see many dedicated shmup companies as it's not really a profitable genre, kinda like fighting games outside the big three, now four.
You know how as things evolve and progress less and less people know anything about the originals and everything becomes a copy of a copy? Cave is the original reference for good arcade bullet hell. What distinguishes them IMO is that unlike what ZUN did to the genre they're not afraid of fast bullets. Their design isn't too complicated, not even scoring so they rely on raw challenge to make up for that and it works. It also filters just about anyone but the autistic though.
I've been playing a lot of DoDonpachi recently and I can get to level 3 with one credit. This shit is fun. I don't know why it took me so long to try shmups.
Curiously so do fighting games and rpgs. Yet those are the games with the highest concentration of crying in the threads. One anon beats another anon's ass in a game and he has a b***hfit here and talks about it. Someone larps an rpg and people call them out on it with citations and proof
Shumps filter them simply because they don't understand the mechanics 99 percent of the time because they died to a bullet and put in 999 credits and just mash bombs.
Same shit every time too >duhhh shmups are bad cause they’re too simple >why can’t you clear one, then? >duhhhh I don’t wanna do the same thing over and over I am moronic buhhhh
You clearly enjoy them enough to put in time to clear several games, so I doubt that you are using simple with the same intention as the morons I was mocking. Even so, I disagree.
dark stalkers was taken over by troons that stalk and dox on even on fc. You won't see it at first glance. You are even safer playing jojo hftf than darkstalkers.

I'm gonna guess you actually do have to program stage patterns by hand so that alone raises the challenge substantially from a Vampire Survivors clone or whatever.
Stages aren't just enemies but bullet patterns, things that happen in the background, hidden imagery like soldiers walking around or whatever in older games, shit's more indepth than Wave Shooter Enemy Hell.
>program stage patterns by hand
this isn't that hard, it's math and timers. as far as game programming goes it's baby shit
but it's tedious because you're constantly checking back and forth if it works or not, and whether it's fun
the design in something like VS is a lot more straightforward

Bullets that stop are fricking evil. You should also make them change direction when they start moving again.
Sine Mora doesn't play like a euroshmup at all. People actually raged at it because it played much more like a classic dadshmup than their tranmaku garbage.

Can I really say it's nostalgia when I still play that game annually (excluding autistic stints where I start playing it monthly again)?
Time to open a window into real autism:
I like the music a lot and was introduced to it (G.Rev in general) in a very embarrassing way. Snow Fox (arrange) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvyC1JTO3mU was the song that changed the course of young me's tastes forever.
But beyond that I liked chasing that 1CC that I remain too shit to get. So now it's just a comfort game that I play just to lose miserably to (you but stronger) at the ass end of the game, assuming I don't just get spun on by a giant flower.
I like the game aesthetically: the concept of one pilot piloting three ships, each one going through the stage along different routes, and the bosses changing or having variations between that route is cool
I like the dumb story (as I'm in general always going to be a sucker for phyric/Downer endings like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQsoAVXsMwE)
I like the gameplay. The break laser is really awesome and so are the beam clashes, no real "powerups" pleases my gorilla brain, and the game steadily thumbing the screws has always meant it never gets boring for me.
I really really REALLY fricking like stage 5's boss (on the assumption that I don't constantly head the turrets off by breaking them) so you're constantly beam clashing and moving for your life.
I like the remix mode, where basically every stage goes breasts up and if you play on the ship for masochists all the music is different incentivizing you to git gud (which i'm not) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpqH6wrtNxo
I love that mad fricking scramble when your routing goes to ship and you have to claw it back because something changed somewhere along the way and the bullets are in formations you have to raw react to.
In other words. I love the game.
Was the second OST I ever imported too.

Thanks anon
Here's hoping the future's great for all of us
Good players try to act like there are some kind of methods to improve, but they’re always extremely obvious shit like >plan your route >use bombs >watch replays
But the real answer is that you just have to keep playing them over and over. If you don’t enjoy the basic gameplay while failing and learning a game, there’s not much to be done to change that.
> plan your route > use bombs > watch replays
I would say: > Watch for the gaps and move opposite direction of the bullets. > most patterns to dodge are a variation of op. direction, down, up. > Play it safe, don't engage if you can. > Memorization is good but sometimes you have to know how to react on the fly, so improve your finger speed for dodging or your arcade stick movement speed if you play on one. > Try and do deep breathing exercise to de-stress during gameplay it can get very hectic: In-Out-In-Out (nasal breathing, no mouth breathers allowed) 4 counts each, this is called fourfold breath, a lot of militaries use this method,. > To get your finger speed faster: Try and touch your thumb with each finger to certain BPM until you get good enough with that so you can match around 120-160bpm, the games might require 200bpm rhythmic tapping. > Rhythmic Tapping: This technique relies on the background music and whenever you move, you TAP ONCE to move per direction, no holding down the buttons to move so you get super-accurate movement.

or keyboard of course (honestly keyboard is probably the best in general for shmups)
though it depends on what kind of keyboard you use, some switches will make playing on them a really bad experience
Don’t fall for the stick meme anon. It can be fun to use but until you actually get good at using it it just makes playing more frustrating than it otherwise would be, and doesn’t actually control any better than controller or keyboard does.
In Japan there are some new titles being released in arcades through the exA-Arcadia but even there they are dying out. The recent clear of DoDonPachi SaiDaiOuJou after 12 years has caused some curiosity to be rekindled in Japan, however, so maybe there could be a chance of a resurgence.
No, shmups have been getting torn down from arcades ever since early 2000s. There exists a small japanese list of arcades that may or may not have some shmups (usually it's only 1942 or some sequels and DOJ). It's gotten worse since 2019 many older, less popular arcades have closed down.
As other anon mentioned, there is exa arcades, which long story short was made by a israelite contributor from mame that was stealing PCBs and fricking over a lot of people, and he made the move to remove Akai Katana and SDOJ from Mame so he could make OC do not steal revision of the game and sell it for like 3k for fanatics and arcade owners.
Yes, my local arcade has a good selection of shmups like Dodonpachi, Sonic Wings 2, Raiden and a bunch of neo geo titles on an official MVS machine with a built-in emulator or something like that.
There's also a couple of arcades with a windows xp pc inside running MAME, you always see parents and kids playing shmups and cute em ups like Snow Bros on those.
Chile
old picture btw, now there's a 4 player Mario Kart Arcade GP. The owner had to sell some stuff during COVID but there's still plenty of cool stuff like light gun, rythm and fighting games. Lots of rare pinball machines like SEGA's Godzilla or Theatre of Magic.
How's business? I'm from another shit world country and I'm thinking of renting out a place and opening one of these. I'm sure I can beat the competition with just a few rhythm game machines and by taking advantage of weeb cons and the like. Thankfully no one gives a frick about copyright here.
I'd also get at least one CRT for the shmup holy grail machine.
on weeks it's usually at 3/4 capacity but spikes during lunch hours. Weekends are always at full capacity and DDR/In the Groove/Pump it Up weebs camp outside the game center a couple of hours before opening so they can lock one machine for themselves (and they're always the ones who stay until close time). I'd say business is good if you take good care of the machines and develop a system to filter Black folk. This center has a bunch of guards and arcades use a card system instead of coins.
That had something to do with something that no one has never really answered and no one has been able to figure out.
and it wasn't just Cave, it was fricking EVERYONE putting out games there. And so, the 360 somehow ended up being one of the best shooter consoles of all time.
When Microcrotch was stilll actively promoting lewd and extreme content.
These guys keep forgetting, erotic content sells because its erotic and secondary only to good gameplay reasons, its like the reason why VHS and DVDs succeeded where other formats failed: Porn was available on those and weren't restrained from being on them.
>"Let's port all our arcade games!" >Great! What system? >"Xbox 360 lmao" >Oh, that's alright I can just- >"We region locked most of them."
Fast forward 15 years >Hey Cave, can we have ports pls? >"Sure! M2 did these amazing ports!" >Awesome! I can't wait to play it on my PC- >"PS4 only." >I... I guess that's okay- >"Physical copies are only in Japan and it digitally isn't available in some regions." >... >"You'll pay $7 for IKD2007 mode right?"
You'd think the devs would've wised up after GOING FRICKING BANKRUPT THREE TIMES.
The only reason why CAVEcucks can't emulate all their games is because CAVE are cheap scumbags who used old as frick hardware ridden with slowdown to cut costs, which is very difficult to emulate properly.
Probably the same reason they went with Xbox 360. It was probably marginally cheaper, so they ported their games to 360 even though the Japanese userbase (where vast majority of sales would be) was a tiny fraction that of the PS3. Oh, and 360 has a fricking awful d-pad as the kicker.
>CAVEcucks can't emulate all their games
Emulation is pretty much near perfect for all of their games from around 2019, someone made custom blitter and cpu timings to match the slowdown for them.
>"We region locked most of them."
You're confusing Cave in-house ports with different ports made by 5pb. publisher, which did region lock their ports on 360. Cave didn't do that outside of Deathsmiles I think.
There's no pleasing you guys is there? >Zoomers play casual shit like cod and fortnite >Haha look at moronic zoomers with shit taste >Zoomers play popular shit from the old days >Lool you will never be a millennial >Zoomers play hardcore niche genres >Reeeee it's over bros!
If kids want to get into shmups good for them as long as they respect what's already there and aren't just obnoxious secondaries
And being a shmup secondary is almost impossible aside from touhou because they have no story and no e celeb drama scene
even my boomer coworkers give me weird looks when I tell them I'm into shmups
which is weird that I need to do that, they should assume it by the otomedius shirt I'm wearing
>tiny misleading hitbox for your ship and the bullets >crippling slowdown >little ship variety with minor changes between them >autistic, restrictive, artificial score system >giant clouds of bullet vomit that are highly restrictive of movement and routing >giant screen-wide player shot that gives little incentive for pointblanking or even positioning >zero stage hazards >stage backgrounds plays no to minimal role in gameplay; could just be replaced by a black void and barely lose anything. >no powerups or resource management; even bombs are primarily only ever used reactively
yep, must be CAVEslop
Pretty much everything besides tranmaku. Toaplan, Psikyo, IREM, Konami, Taito, Raizing, Seibu, Capcom, Hudson, etc. for classic games. For modern games, tons of twin-sticks, almost all of Housemarque's games, Sine Mora, Jamestown+, Skyforce Reloaded, etc.

Go basedface as you weave your pixel hitbox through bullet vomit pixels over a black void, while the game grinds to a halt sudddenly and speeds back up suddenly. It's just mindless excess for morons, with a completely arbitrary and hastily thrown together score system with many intersecting elements to create depth, but without intentionality.

Jamestown is one of the most fun couch co-ops I've played, terribly underrated game
We will never get a glorious M2 remaster of Progear because Crapcom own the license and won't do more than dump the rom on steam for their shitty arcade emulator.
>memo is the foundational skill of learning literally anything
There are other genres that require more skills than just "hurr durr memorize this and memorize that". Look at pic rel and then cope and seethe.
>All your memorization means nothing if you can’t execute in a run
And like I said, there are other genres which require way more than just memorization. Even a monkey can be taught to memorize specific patterns.
what a dumb picture. games on the left are "mechanically" simple but they're way harder than anything in the center. and on the right we have games that are supposedly "too hard" for most of the players which is why palworld or starcraft sold only several million copies or so. meanwhile the center games are absolute slop, they're no way harder than say super mario you just fricking watch gorillions of cutscenes and then let the console heashot for you.
The genre died when it stopped being about surviving and overcoming challenging levels and bosses with a unique aesthetic and interesting gameplay systems, with a score system tightly interwoven with core gameplay. It changed to being some flowery, homosexual bullshit where you play as a little anime girl but with a 1x1 hitbox, and now instead of learning enemies and stage routes, you memorize exactly how to weave through these giants clouds of bullets shot by other anime girls, and now gameplay is all just about le big score number, with giant ass tokens and multipliers obscuring the entire screen. And you have to chain all the green enemies and leave alive all the purple enemies, but then sometimes if there is seven purple enemies in a row, you can kill them alternating with green enemies to get a super secret combo chain multiplier, and then you go on this specific pixel during this frame and uncover the super-ultra hyper that makes your per-second score increase while in use but decreases your score from enemies, but this is reversed when you're using the wumbo gun. But then if you're using the mumbo gun, both of these bonuses are removed and you get an epic graze bonus for going near enemy bullets, but this increases the rank which increases the per-second score but makes the game much harder.
It's just a braindead, disjointed mishmash of mechanics and systems hastily thrown together that feels very arbitrary and artificial, but autistic people eat it up.
>shmups always had tiny hitboxes >shmups always had anime girls >shmups always had convoluted score systems >shmups always had giant score tokens and multipliers and garbage flooding the screen like a mobile game >shmups' scoring was always highly removed from survival >shmups always had dense intricate clouds of bullets
You are a stupid frick who has only ever played tranmaku garbage, kys
I’m not saying any of that I’m saying those things are only AESTHETICALLY different, the gameplay elements that make a shmup fun that you describe in your “when le shmups were still good” green text are the exact same in new games as they were in old ones. moron. >IT LOOKS DIFFERENT SO ITS ACTUALLY A DIFFERENT THING
>tiny hitboxes, crippling start and stop slowdown, convoluted score systems, horrible screen visibility, dense intricate clouds of bullet vomit, lack of ship differentiation, lack of powerups or meaningful resource management, lack of stage hazards, lack of background usage, lack of pointblanking, lack of screen aggression (taking place primarily on bottom third), and score being far removed from core survival gameplay are all just aesthetic differences!!
You're so fricking stupid it's unreal. This is why you just don't engage with shitters at all. If they can't post clears, they are only there to spew garbage and troll.
Last post you get out of me. Clear some games and get some experience with more games in the genre than just CAVE. Hell, even just be AWARE OF THE EXISTENCE of other shmups besides CAVE and their indie copycats.
It'd flop and they'd only be able to port it to PC. If you want something that's really like their gacha shmups but as a real game try out Astralbringer.
>Deficits over a very long period of time >Continue to live as a zombie company under the Bank of Japan's ultra-low interest rate environment >Failed in every new business and continue to live only on the Shumps gacha >Eventually, they brought in Kihachi Okamoto, a former Capcom director, as CEO. >This is the man who created Puzzle and Dragon and made a lot of money >Still no good, everyone in the industry think it will go bankrupt someday >Cave somehow made a reverse takeover of Derage, the company behind puzzle and dragon >The company's operating income explodes, and it avoids bankruptcy
I honestly find it interesting that no one in the West is talking about the strange history of this company
Not only you got the name of the dude wrong, not only you got the name of his mobile game wrong, you also made a shit ton of stuff up in the latter part of the text. How does it feel being a pos?
Guy has never posted a clear btw. And if you do post one he will just say it doesn’t count. He is mentally insane and wants everyone to hate shmups as much as he does.
Until shmups become profitable again and another studio of developers with years of experience in the genre get enough resources and manpower to make dozens of genre defining, graphically impressive bullet hells with great music within two decades... Then no.
I'm pretty close to clearing Dodonpachi, I can no miss no bomb the first three stages pretty easily but I'm getting brick walled at stages 5 and 6
Any advice?
Save your resources until stage 5 and 6, and memorize the strats of the stage 4 and 5 bosses, they are basically easy to kill and the only thing you have to focus on is the stages.
Why are there so many utter morons ITT? >Hurr dure just memorize bro, no I can't clear these games because muh memorization >Hurr durr complex scoring systems are bad >Hurr durr shmups players are trannies despite Being one of the only niches of hardcore gaming that isn't utterly dominated by them
shmups are very memo-heavy, with very little dynamic gameplay.
shmup score systems are just obtuse and convoluted for the sake of it rather than being an intuitive and deep extension of core gameplay
there are trannies everywhere in the shmup community, particularly bullet hells, due to the extreme autism required to enjoy them
>Shmups are memo heavy
Try beating any game without taking damage and see how far you get without memorizing certain parts >Obtuse scoring
Depends on the game. "Get big combos", or "pick up medals" doesn't seem to be that convoluted to me >Trannies everywhere
Where? I can show you the trannies just about everywhere else too
Looks like I got the autist really upset. Reminder he has never posted a clear and never will because he is a stupid frick who was MINDFRICKED by shmups.

still waiting for that mushihimesama futari steam port, and others...
fpbp
Port your games to Steam already you morons
>At being so unprofitable that they closed down? Maybe.
Sauce???
Of course Ganker pretends to like this utter dogshit lol
I will never understand cave haters
i completely understand post 2002 cave haters
But Mushihimesama, Ibara, and Pink Sweets were incredible.
DDP, DOJ, Mushihimisama, Guwange, ESP De.Ra. are all sick as frick. But they made their games overwhelmingly weebish to the point where I can't stand the way they look.
Add Ketsui, Espgaluda and Akai Katana to that list. Fun as hell but dear god are they fricking ugly to look at.
>made their games overwhelmingly weebish
What does that mean?
Anime girls are in them. That’s enough to be overly weebish to morons.
It's a wonder why these type of morons continue going on this website when they're so scared of anime girls, it's baffling.
This brainrot was everywhere on the shmups farm back in my day. It's probably still there.
I find it fascinating why one would interact with Japanese products while hating everything about its culture.
Funny how tranime girls was not part of shmups culture basically at all in the 80s and 90s
Cotton, TSS and 2hu already existed then
They were about 1% of shmups, and they had sensible designs without being entirely moe tranime baby garbage. also touhou was basically irrelevant until 6 which released in 2002; touhou 1-5 aren't even shmups
>there was no anime girls
>okay there was anime girls but it was different
More proof this guy doesn’t give a frick about what he is talking about and just wants to waste peoples time being an annoying moron
and the irony is it's not possible to be more moe than the 3 games mentioned. if anything, nu-shmups fell off hard in that department
Lying moron is mad that he was exposed for being a stupid frick incapable of telling the truth.
you have never touched a shmup in your life that wasn't from CAVE or Treasure or some indie copycatting them. now shut the frick up already shitter.
I’ve got ya razzed up because you only lie and pretend to clear games but you never have.
>touhou 1-5 aren't even shmups
lmao moron
how about the entirety of pc engine library
>next goalpost: "not shmup, they're dad shooters"
There are very few shmups on PC Engine that are moe tranime garbage where you control anime girls shooting other anime shit. Even some of the games with anime girls like Sapphire have traditional ships and enemy designs, with the anime only being in cutscenes.
When will you morons just admit your entire knowledge of shmups comes exclusive from CAVE and indie games?
You are a moronic liar incapable of telling the truth. Lying, yapping, and cannot clear shmups. Sad!
>Cotton and Sylphia don't count
Kys poser
>very few
Man, you are an illiterate fricking moron
>v-very few!
have a nice day NOW
This isn’t true why are you such a lying sack of dogshit
Well at least you have a reason
But I love the "weebish" look, nothing is prettier than an anime girl, the older I get the more I realize this.
>nothing is prettier than an anime girl, the older I get the more I realize this.
shmups players are so weird
I think its a pretty common opinion among people that enjoy anime aka everyone in this website
<10% of the posts on this site are on tranime boards you little homosexual. It's much more a politics board than tranime
>people that enjoy anime
subhumans
popular thing bad
cave owns BHITCH
Of course not
>we hate PC 🙁
>no please buy Deathsmiles 2 on PC!
why are they so schizophrenic
what's up with this shit?
I want to play it but I already have Deathsmiles 1 on steam and the only way to get 2 is to buy the 1+2 bundle for 40euro???
also why did they stop porting their games to steam suddenly? I'd like to get Futari too
That's on City Connection.
maybe, all you really need is about 1-3 really good artists and 1 great musician
the gameplay is quite easy to surpass
>>the gameplay is quite easy to surpass
Then why has everyone who tried failed?
SHMUPs are the easiest genre to make a game for. It's the lowest effort type of game. There's several indie shmups that have probably sold more than most Cave games.
You didn't really answer my question. Why do all of those shmups on Steam fail, save a few?
Not really. Music and visuals alone don't carry DFK or SDOJ tbh.
>Music and visuals alone don't carry DFK or SDOJ tbh.
yeah they do
It's easy to make shmups, but it's not easy to make good ones
They are very difficult to design properly. I've been learning a bit more about it, and it's not simple, especially for bullet hell style games. Action platformers are much easier to design in comparison.
t. Game designer
cave shooters are memorable because of the visuals and music
it's really not hard to code all the gameplay mechanics, I have made danmakus, it's the art/music that is hard
the code's pretty simple, even as a codelet I figured it out
the bullet pattern design is hell
there are only some vague rules/logic to follow and it feels like pure trial and error to make one if it's your first time
also imo you've gotta be good at the genre to be able to make one game in it
>the bullet pattern design is hell
not really, mostly just firing at angles with timing control, and the bullets occasionally having different states like bursting or speeding up, or homing or whatever
and a lot of playtesting to adjust things into a tight level or bossfight
it's the ART that takes the longest
what you got there works, but it's not sellable
just compare to the bullet sprites in cave games
pic related already has 3-4 different bullet styles, and they're all animated sprites
and great sound and music is a must
without it, it's hollow
not to deny the importance of graphics/audio but they're a lot more straightforwards to make, changing a sprite and its color takes minutes
bullet patterns require some mixed form of abstraction, geometry that isn't very intuitive, and they're the core of your game so you can't skip on it
you can really bang your head for hours getting nowhere doing bullet patterns, and then on playthrough you'll realize you've fricked up royally because your pattern's too much fluff and can be dodged by just lightly tapping left/right
I could rip out any popular bullet hell's graphics, shove them in my "game" and it would still be bad because the fundamentals aren't there yet
I think a smarter dev might be able to do some form of analytical solution or program a bot to move a player character through a pattern, but that's too much effort and I'm not looking to do something insanely hard if I continue with this
no, I came up with the solutions myself
originally I wanted to use object pooling for perf concerns but simply limiting my game to only be able to delete X bullets per frame seems to work well enough
is there a godot tutorial you're following?
Blue Revolver dev needs to develop his style further and he could easily beat Cave shooters in a year or two pushing with a small team.
when's that update coming you israelite
Don't push him too hard, he's going to get le depressed again
That's why he should get a dev team together that consists of him, an artist, musician and some play tester so he doesn't have to stress too much about it.
I thought he already has all of those?
unironically dude literally needed to hit the gym and fix sleep schedule and he could've been the next indie CAVE
>1-3 really good artists and 1 great musician
>really good artist
Then how Zun did it?
oops
Batrider & Garegga are fun but love to punish you for being good.
Does Batrider do the same rank bullshit as Garegga or can you actually at least somewhat play it like a normal video game?
As someone with only a passing knowledge of SHMUPs, what makes Cave so special when compared to other developers?
No offense but when I look at footage of something like DoDonPachi it kinda just looks like every other SHMUP except with more bullets on screen.
They're like French Bread in the sense that they can only do one thing, but they do it well having developed their own artstyle and gameplay to go with it. Nowadays you don't see many dedicated shmup companies as it's not really a profitable genre, kinda like fighting games outside the big three, now four.
production value + good raw game design + gameplay polished to perfection
it's that simple, it's just straight vidya making fundamentals
the music
You know how as things evolve and progress less and less people know anything about the originals and everything becomes a copy of a copy? Cave is the original reference for good arcade bullet hell. What distinguishes them IMO is that unlike what ZUN did to the genre they're not afraid of fast bullets. Their design isn't too complicated, not even scoring so they rely on raw challenge to make up for that and it works. It also filters just about anyone but the autistic though.
CAVE will suffer the same fate as treasure
I'm not him so I don't know, go beg him for it.
I've been playing a lot of DoDonpachi recently and I can get to level 3 with one credit. This shit is fun. I don't know why it took me so long to try shmups.
Shmups constantly expose Ganker as being full of morons who don’t understand nor play games.
Same shit every time too
>duhhh shmups are bad cause they’re too simple
>why can’t you clear one, then?
>duhhhh I don’t wanna do the same thing over and over I am moronic buhhhh
> TFW can ace separate stages in training mode.
> Frick up runs constantly on last stage.
WHHYYYYY.
>practice DOJ stage 2 boss
>perfect
>get to boss in a run
>shit myself
every god damn time.
I guess I'll make a breakthrough in +40h if not I'm no good.
They are simple
t. Person who has cleared several
You clearly enjoy them enough to put in time to clear several games, so I doubt that you are using simple with the same intention as the morons I was mocking. Even so, I disagree.
fighting games too. i made THREE darkstalkers threads begging for games on fightcade and homosexuals just posted lewds
dark stalkers was taken over by troons that stalk and dox on even on fc. You won't see it at first glance. You are even safer playing jojo hftf than darkstalkers.
qrd?
Shill me some good shumps (not 2hoe, frick that). I don't mind getting raped from the get go.
Crimzon Clover World EXplosion, Arcade Mode, Original. 3rd stage is where it gets really tough and 2nd boss can be a challenge.
Grab an arcade stick if you have one and get going.
Dodonpachi series (whichever entry looks coolest to you), Battle Garegga, Batsugun, Truxton/Tatsujin, Out Zone, Tengai/Sengoku Blade, Graze Counter GM.
> Batsugun.
Yeah, that will rape everyone that tries.
Like Dreamer is pretty tight tbh
> Ask for something that's not 2hu.
> Literally knock-off/hu with shit graphics.
Yeah no, skip on that dude.
It's almost as much DOJ as it it 2hoes.
I love Like Dreamer. I'm not super hardcore into shmups, so I highly recommend it to people that just want to actually play a fun game.
Darius Gaiden
Zeroranger
Devil Engine
Crimzon Clover, Mushihimesama and Gundemonium Recollection, or Darius Gaiden, Gradius Gaiden and Gunbird 2 if you don't like danmaku

eurotrash
you are a poser
Sine Mora doesn't play like a euroshmup at all. People actually raged at it because it played much more like a classic dadshmup than their tranmaku garbage.
Lying moron defending eurotrash
>>Sine Mora [PC/PS3] (emulation)
+ [PC] (Steam)
disregarded
Yeah just looking at sine mora footage it looks like utter dogshit.
What crackhead clown list is this?
Start with whatever you want, so long as it's not like Battle Garegga, Hellsinker or Daioujou.
What issue is there with the list? Just the fact that it ncludes anything besides exclusively CAVE, Treasure, and their indie copycats?
Just seemed very scatterbrained. Not very often do you see Dangan Feveron, Salamander on the fricking NES, Batrider, Sine Mora and goddamn Out Zone next to eachother.
Now in hindsight, I apologize, reading it again I kind of respect it.
It's meant to cover a wide variety of subgenres and different skills across multiple developers while still being accessible to beginners.
Yeah, it's a mess. It's like
>Yeah I want action games
>Oh yeah Ninja Gaiden 2 on the NES, Wanted Dead, Osman, Castlevania 64 and the Stellar Blade demo on PS5
but like I said, I respect it. Don't mind my homosexualry please.
its a poser list that guy who made it has played maybe 2 games of
it's literally made by a superplayer

Border Down
Under Defeat
I’m excited for the port of Under Defeat and will play it when it is released.
>the port of Under Defeat
I just want Border Down man.
Though I'll happily buy Under Defeat if it gets me closer to Border Down on PC
I honestly have no clue how G.Rev still has a pulse.
It's not like Granzella where the reason that is alive is because they've been milking me of money on R-Type Final 2(3) dlc. What the frick is keeping them alive?
>I just want Border Down man.
Not him, but why? That game was made by buttholes.
That game has hated me since the Dreamcast. It's so goddamn mean.
I love the stage 1 music as much as the next guy, but if they ever port it I'm going to figure out how to reviewbomb it all by myself.
I read what you said and I love it. I hope you get your port, man. And I hope they do it justice. Even if that game still hates me.
Thanks anon
Here's hoping the future's great for all of us
Touhou beat them permanently at game 8. Massive powergap
How do you git gud at shmups?
Good players try to act like there are some kind of methods to improve, but they’re always extremely obvious shit like
>plan your route
>use bombs
>watch replays
But the real answer is that you just have to keep playing them over and over. If you don’t enjoy the basic gameplay while failing and learning a game, there’s not much to be done to change that.
> plan your route
> use bombs
> watch replays
I would say:
> Watch for the gaps and move opposite direction of the bullets.
> most patterns to dodge are a variation of op. direction, down, up.
> Rhythmic Tapping: This technique relies on the background music and whenever you move, you TAP ONCE to move per direction, no holding down the buttons to move so you get super-accurate movement.
this
also, get a decent controller/stick (optional)
I only use keyboard ha
or keyboard of course (honestly keyboard is probably the best in general for shmups)
though it depends on what kind of keyboard you use, some switches will make playing on them a really bad experience
Don’t fall for the stick meme anon. It can be fun to use but until you actually get good at using it it just makes playing more frustrating than it otherwise would be, and doesn’t actually control any better than controller or keyboard does.
The buttons make the difference. It's quicker with less strain on your right hand when the buttons are low travel like Sanwa shit.
Aquire autism
In making garbage games? Probably not
>he can’t clear
pathetic
I'm not a huge schmupgay but the few cave games I've played sucked big time
>schoot em up
???????????
Do shmups still exists in an arcade?
Arcade stick still makes you feel more in the zone with the ship.
In Japan there are some new titles being released in arcades through the exA-Arcadia but even there they are dying out. The recent clear of DoDonPachi SaiDaiOuJou after 12 years has caused some curiosity to be rekindled in Japan, however, so maybe there could be a chance of a resurgence.
>exA-Arcadia
Oh yeah those things exists
No, shmups have been getting torn down from arcades ever since early 2000s. There exists a small japanese list of arcades that may or may not have some shmups (usually it's only 1942 or some sequels and DOJ). It's gotten worse since 2019 many older, less popular arcades have closed down.
As other anon mentioned, there is exa arcades, which long story short was made by a israelite contributor from mame that was stealing PCBs and fricking over a lot of people, and he made the move to remove Akai Katana and SDOJ from Mame so he could make OC do not steal revision of the game and sell it for like 3k for fanatics and arcade owners.
>he made the move to remove Akai Katana and SDOJ from Mame so he could make OC do not steal revision of the game
Damn what scum
Damn I never knew any of that regarding exA. I just thought the Touhou 6 remake looked pretty cool.
Rhythm games and gatcha (yes even in arcades) replaced shmups and other action games.
Shmups are a subset of rhythm games so I don't see the problem. Follow your predefined path with predefined inputs to the end, very skillful.
You are stupid as frick.
Otherway around, SHMUPs were there before Rhythm Games were even a thing which were replaced by fighting games and rhythm games in popularity.
Yes, my local arcade has a good selection of shmups like Dodonpachi, Sonic Wings 2, Raiden and a bunch of neo geo titles on an official MVS machine with a built-in emulator or something like that.
There's also a couple of arcades with a windows xp pc inside running MAME, you always see parents and kids playing shmups and cute em ups like Snow Bros on those.
where?
Chile
old picture btw, now there's a 4 player Mario Kart Arcade GP. The owner had to sell some stuff during COVID but there's still plenty of cool stuff like light gun, rythm and fighting games. Lots of rare pinball machines like SEGA's Godzilla or Theatre of Magic.
>LCD screens
absolutely disgusting
This center has a bunch of guards and arcades use a card system instead of coins.
> weeb audience on PC and Playstation
Oh lets make weebshit for Xbox instead!
> Arcade is slowing dying out worldwide
Oh lets make games for Arcade too!
At least they didn't make shit for the Ouya.
That had something to do with something that no one has never really answered and no one has been able to figure out.
and it wasn't just Cave, it was fricking EVERYONE putting out games there. And so, the 360 somehow ended up being one of the best shooter consoles of all time.
Maybe the microsoft money was just too good at the time
When Microcrotch was stilll actively promoting lewd and extreme content.
These guys keep forgetting, erotic content sells because its erotic and secondary only to good gameplay reasons, its like the reason why VHS and DVDs succeeded where other formats failed: Porn was available on those and weren't restrained from being on them.
Microsoft was trying to combat the american dudebro image the original Xbox had, so they gave very good monetary incentives to japanese developers.
yeah with like Ninja Gaiden 2, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey and whatnot. Not a bunch of shooters only played by a select few and only released in Japan.
Either way, I thank them for it. Impoiting Mushihimesama Futari literally got me back into shooters for the first time since the Dreamcast years.
>"Let's port all our arcade games!"
>Great! What system?
>"Xbox 360 lmao"
>Oh, that's alright I can just-
>"We region locked most of them."
Fast forward 15 years
>Hey Cave, can we have ports pls?
>"Sure! M2 did these amazing ports!"
>Awesome! I can't wait to play it on my PC-
>"PS4 only."
>I... I guess that's okay-
>"Physical copies are only in Japan and it digitally isn't available in some regions."
>...
Deathsmiles is the only good Cave game so that makes sense.
watch them frick up and release a new game but make it apple arcade exclusive.
ded company
ded genre
So in other words, they will never be topped?
>Zoomers are discovering shmups.
THIS
WHY THE FRICK DOES EVERYTHING I LIKE HAVE TO REACH THE UNDESERVING MASSES? AAAAA
Shmupsissies... we didn't gatekeep hard enough.
And that's a good thing
How?
There's no pleasing you guys is there?
>Zoomers play casual shit like cod and fortnite
>Haha look at moronic zoomers with shit taste
>Zoomers play popular shit from the old days
>Lool you will never be a millennial
>Zoomers play hardcore niche genres
>Reeeee it's over bros!
If kids want to get into shmups good for them as long as they respect what's already there and aren't just obnoxious secondaries
And being a shmup secondary is almost impossible aside from touhou because they have no story and no e celeb drama scene
>as long as they respect what's already there and aren't just obnoxious secondaries
Damn near impossible for a zoomer, which is the key issue.
even my boomer coworkers give me weird looks when I tell them I'm into shmups
which is weird that I need to do that, they should assume it by the otomedius shirt I'm wearing
holy shit you sound like a socially moronic homosexual. Your coworkers must fricking hate you.
>fan manchild neckbeard unironically wearing an anime pedo shirt to work
grim
You sound chill as hell
>tiny misleading hitbox for your ship and the bullets
>crippling slowdown
>little ship variety with minor changes between them
>autistic, restrictive, artificial score system
>giant clouds of bullet vomit that are highly restrictive of movement and routing
>giant screen-wide player shot that gives little incentive for pointblanking or even positioning
>zero stage hazards
>stage backgrounds plays no to minimal role in gameplay; could just be replaced by a black void and barely lose anything.
>no powerups or resource management; even bombs are primarily only ever used reactively
yep, must be CAVEslop
What shmups do you like, anon?
Pretty much everything besides tranmaku. Toaplan, Psikyo, IREM, Konami, Taito, Raizing, Seibu, Capcom, Hudson, etc. for classic games. For modern games, tons of twin-sticks, almost all of Housemarque's games, Sine Mora, Jamestown+, Skyforce Reloaded, etc.
Many of those games gave the exact same things you are complaining about in your other post. I think you are just moronic.
Select games have a few of those to a limited degree, whereas basically every single CAVE game has all of those.
I don't think you have any idea what you're talking about.
I do. You don’t.
You don't have clears, you moronic shitter. I have nearly 100 no-miss clears. Now frick outta here poser homosexual.
Now I know it’s you kek. No need to listen to this lying schizo moron.
>Jamestown+
I'll never forgive these guys for cutting the best part of the level 2 music in the remaster.
Jamestown is one of the most fun couch co-ops I've played, terribly underrated game
We will never get a glorious M2 remaster of Progear because Crapcom own the license and won't do more than dump the rom on steam for their shitty arcade emulator.
>Memorization: the genre
I can't believe shmuptrannies still give a shit about this dead genre. lmao.
>complaining about memo in a singleplayer game
memo is the foundational skill of learning literally anything
>memo is the foundational skill of learning literally anything
There are other genres that require more skills than just "hurr durr memorize this and memorize that". Look at pic rel and then cope and seethe.
All your memorization means nothing if you can’t execute in a run, and I know for a fact that you can’t.
>All your memorization means nothing if you can’t execute in a run
And like I said, there are other genres which require way more than just memorization. Even a monkey can be taught to memorize specific patterns.
Shmuptrannies are deluded.
Memorization and execution are different things dumb frick.
who is this person and why do his opinions matter
what a dumb picture. games on the left are "mechanically" simple but they're way harder than anything in the center. and on the right we have games that are supposedly "too hard" for most of the players which is why palworld or starcraft sold only several million copies or so. meanwhile the center games are absolute slop, they're no way harder than say super mario you just fricking watch gorillions of cutscenes and then let the console heashot for you.
Yes
Black Onion WHEN? WHERE THE FRICK IS IT?
Please understand, Void stranger needs to be 70 hours longer
I still haven't even reached an ending yet lmfao
I haven't even started yet despite buying it day 1 lel
Try it and get filtered by those lightning statues like I do
The genre died when it stopped being about surviving and overcoming challenging levels and bosses with a unique aesthetic and interesting gameplay systems, with a score system tightly interwoven with core gameplay.
>STG used to be about this
>Now it’s about (the same things just described differently)
You don’t play shmups.
>I've only ever played CAVE and Treasure
>now let me tell you why you're wrong about shmups
kys moron
There is no meaningful difference other than aesthetics that you are describing you lying sack of shit
Name ten shmups you've cleared pre-2000
>shmups always had tiny hitboxes
>shmups always had anime girls
>shmups always had convoluted score systems
>shmups always had giant score tokens and multipliers and garbage flooding the screen like a mobile game
>shmups' scoring was always highly removed from survival
>shmups always had dense intricate clouds of bullets
You are a stupid frick who has only ever played tranmaku garbage, kys
Found the wannabe oldgay pretender, kys
>don't get hit and don't bomb
>convoluted
lmao
Reading comprehension
You are a stupid frick liar and will have to live with that. Sorry.
>Get btfo
>Cope and seethe
sorry but you are a wojakposter and therefore always wrong by default
>Be cave
>Make new game
>Put it on some shitty dead exclusive arcade platform
No wonder these gays are basically bankrut
Did you guys know Cave recently released a Touhou shmup?
Didn't know it finally came out. Looks worse than Gomaotsu tho.
Why can't cave make a proper mobile shmup?
It'd flop and they'd only be able to port it to PC. If you want something that's really like their gacha shmups but as a real game try out Astralbringer.
>astralbringer
I completely forgot about that game, how is it?
Incomplete ludo. It doesn't have that many stages right now.
Incomplete? is it on EA?
Yeah EA for the moment.
>Deficits over a very long period of time
>Continue to live as a zombie company under the Bank of Japan's ultra-low interest rate environment
>Failed in every new business and continue to live only on the Shumps gacha
>Eventually, they brought in Kihachi Okamoto, a former Capcom director, as CEO.
>This is the man who created Puzzle and Dragon and made a lot of money
>Still no good, everyone in the industry think it will go bankrupt someday
>Cave somehow made a reverse takeover of Derage, the company behind puzzle and dragon
>The company's operating income explodes, and it avoids bankruptcy
I honestly find it interesting that no one in the West is talking about the strange history of this company
sorry, not okamoto kihachi but okamoto yoshiki...
Not only you got the name of the dude wrong, not only you got the name of his mobile game wrong, you also made a shit ton of stuff up in the latter part of the text. How does it feel being a pos?
Guy has never posted a clear btw. And if you do post one he will just say it doesn’t count. He is mentally insane and wants everyone to hate shmups as much as he does.
post clears
I thought you weren’t giving me the dignity of a response anymore, what’s the matter moron? Mad no one is going along with your game?
>And if you do post one he will just say it doesn’t count
lmao, the amount of cope is unreal. just kys already shitter
Until shmups become profitable again and another studio of developers with years of experience in the genre get enough resources and manpower to make dozens of genre defining, graphically impressive bullet hells with great music within two decades... Then no.
Cave's games are artistically impressive, but not graphically.
I'm pretty close to clearing Dodonpachi, I can no miss no bomb the first three stages pretty easily but I'm getting brick walled at stages 5 and 6
Any advice?
give up
you are a shitter
moronic liar
you are a shitter
deal with it b***h
>You are a shitter because you weren't born with the ability to no miss no bomb every game
I know that, and that's why I asked for advice.
Ignore the moron.
shut up shitter
can you even beat dodonpachi with just 1 coin?
Save your resources until stage 5 and 6, and memorize the strats of the stage 4 and 5 bosses, they are basically easy to kill and the only thing you have to focus on is the stages.
Thanks. I'm getting fairly consistent at the stage 4 boss glitch but still working on stage 5 boss.
And by the way, which ship are you using?
For me it's A-L
I tried using A-L at first but I swapped to C-L for the wider shot.
>wider shot.
SHITTER
Why are there so many utter morons ITT?
>Hurr dure just memorize bro, no I can't clear these games because muh memorization
>Hurr durr complex scoring systems are bad
>Hurr durr shmups players are trannies despite Being one of the only niches of hardcore gaming that isn't utterly dominated by them
There are a few extremely autistic anti shmup posters that pop up whenever they are mentioned.
Those are all valid complaints though.
shmups are very memo-heavy, with very little dynamic gameplay.
shmup score systems are just obtuse and convoluted for the sake of it rather than being an intuitive and deep extension of core gameplay
there are trannies everywhere in the shmup community, particularly bullet hells, due to the extreme autism required to enjoy them
Lying moron who can’t clear a game and feels the need to take it out on others trying to enjoy stg.
>Shmups are memo heavy
Try beating any game without taking damage and see how far you get without memorizing certain parts
>Obtuse scoring
Depends on the game. "Get big combos", or "pick up medals" doesn't seem to be that convoluted to me
>Trannies everywhere
Where? I can show you the trannies just about everywhere else too
This is why you need to get some clears to understand the discussion. You are wrong on all points.
recently 1cc'd hellsinker and it was one of the best experiences I've had in gaming
pure ludokino
great another shitter with shitclears
Good job, bro. What are you playing next?
Looks like I got the autist really upset. Reminder he has never posted a clear and never will because he is a stupid frick who was MINDFRICKED by shmups.
>people still doubting rfk's clears
you people never learn do you?
When bested on logic the moron jumps into just being annoying. Nothing is too low for the moron.
Anyone who disrespects CAVE or shmups is a bona fide moron. This is why modern games suck balls and you pigs eat that slop up.
you channel sucks mork
go and play crinja gayden
>mork sucks off Ninja Gaiden all the time
>actually watch his footage
>he plays on normal, aka two difficulty levels below the true difficulty level
>plays the game like a kotaku journalist
Going to play some CAVE shmups right now. Feels good.
post replays shitter
Which ones?
Finally, another shmup thread
What are you guys playing right now? I'm grinding for a Crimzon Cover arcade original clear
No, since the genre is dead
there are literally zero good shmups released after the year 2000.
aero fighters sucks
What am I looking at
>make a shmup that's purely anime girls shooting bullets at other anime girls
>is one of the few survivors left of the genre
Grim. Turns out morons seething and posturing about artstyle and character design don't play and support video games in the first place. Many such cases.
>enjoying shmups and massive anime tiddies is mutually exclusive
Brainlet take. Consider being less moronic.
ShmupBlack folk are just mad that nobody except Japanese boomers from Yahoo News cared about the Inbachi 1cc, while the general public cared more about a kid beating NES Tetris and Trimming The Herbs from Mario Maker 1 being cleared legitimately.
I cared about all three of them
i havent seen anyone mad; people are overjoyed
that there was any acknowledegement at all
excelent awesome clears mein freund 🙂
Alright the first 58 places of the no-miss difficulty list are done. Most of the ones below that are fairly trivial and I don't feel like ranking them.
Just going to do Raiden 2all nomiss, Raiden 2 2all nomiss, Dangun nomiss, R-Type 3 2all nomiss, Tatsujin 2all nomiss, Rayforce nomiss, Batrider Advanced nomiss, Contra 3 Hard nomiss, Metal Slug 6 nomiss, Daimakaimura 2all nomiss, and a Psikyo 2all nomiss and it should be done and ready to publish.
Will be a good resource to go along with the Perikle's list.
Baby first cave game you guys recommend? I've only 1cc normal touhous...
EspGaluda I and Mushihimesama on Maniac
take the dadshmup pill, CAVE is boring as frick
Either Mushihimesama or Deathsmiles 1.
donpachi
WOW, LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THAT BATTLESHIP
>I DON'T BELIEVE IT, THEY GOT A DOOMSDAY MACHINE!
>COME ON KID, HIT IT WITH EVERYTHING YOU GOT!
My first cave game was Deathsmiles and I can't recommend it enough
it's very approachable and extremely fun to progress through because of how stages work
love me some ketsui
Thoughts on Guwange?
guwange. giggawang. notice the similarities.
