I never said "there was no anime girls" you stupid fricking disingenous mong. I don't have time to sit here and argue semantics with some ugly brown third world mutt.

Anime was a much, much smaller theme in shmups in the 80s and 90s, it was much more about military, space, fantasy, mecha, comedy, etc. with a small percentage even referencing anime at all, and usually it was just in cutscenes. Even "cute 'em ups" were not just a bunch of anime girls shooting bullets at other anime girls, it was a lot of wacky and over-the-top designs that contrasted with the tough as nails gameplay.

Compare that to the mid-late 2000s where it's just primarily cutesy moe tranime garbage.

SHMUPs are the easiest genre to make a game for. It's the lowest effort type of game. There's several indie shmups that have probably sold more than most Cave games.

They are very difficult to design properly. I've been learning a bit more about it, and it's not simple, especially for bullet hell style games. Action platformers are much easier to design in comparison.

the bullet pattern design is hell
there are only some vague rules/logic to follow and it feels like pure trial and error to make one if it's your first time

also imo you've gotta be good at the genre to be able to make one game in it

          Anonymous

          >the bullet pattern design is hell
not really, mostly just firing at angles with timing control, and the bullets occasionally having different states like bursting or speeding up, or homing or whatever
and a lot of playtesting to adjust things into a tight level or bossfight

it's the ART that takes the longest
what you got there works, but it's not sellable
just compare to the bullet sprites in cave games
pic related already has 3-4 different bullet styles, and they're all animated sprites

and great sound and music is a must
          without it, it's hollow

            Anonymous

not to deny the importance of graphics/audio but they're a lot more straightforwards to make, changing a sprite and its color takes minutes

bullet patterns require some mixed form of abstraction, geometry that isn't very intuitive, and they're the core of your game so you can't skip on it
you can really bang your head for hours getting nowhere doing bullet patterns, and then on playthrough you'll realize you've fricked up royally because your pattern's too much fluff and can be dodged by just lightly tapping left/right

I could rip out any popular bullet hell's graphics, shove them in my "game" and it would still be bad because the fundamentals aren't there yet

Always wondered how STG developers were able to actually know if a challenge like Inbachi from SDOJ is actually possible to clear.

                Anonymous

the way I have it, each pattern is going to be isolated into its own script, so I can just do some sort of practice mode where the game directly starts on that pattern, and playtest
then it's just stats, if every pattern is possible, the boss is in theory possible

I think a smarter dev might be able to do some form of analytical solution or program a bot to move a player character through a pattern, but that's too much effort and I'm not looking to do something insanely hard if I continue with this

is there a godot tutorial you're following?

no, I came up with the solutions myself
originally I wanted to use object pooling for perf concerns but simply limiting my game to only be able to delete X bullets per frame seems to work well enough

You know how as things evolve and progress less and less people know anything about the originals and everything becomes a copy of a copy? Cave is the original reference for good arcade bullet hell. What distinguishes them IMO is that unlike what ZUN did to the genre they're not afraid of fast bullets. Their design isn't too complicated, not even scoring so they rely on raw challenge to make up for that and it works. It also filters just about anyone but the autistic though.

I love the stage 1 music as much as the next guy, but if they ever port it I'm going to figure out how to reviewbomb it all by myself.

Can I really say it's nostalgia when I still play that game annually (excluding autistic stints where I start playing it monthly again)?

Time to open a window into real autism:
I like the music a lot and was introduced to it (G.Rev in general) in a very embarrassing way. Snow Fox (arrange) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvyC1JTO3mU was the song that changed the course of young me's tastes forever.
But beyond that I liked chasing that 1CC that I remain too shit to get. So now it's just a comfort game that I play just to lose miserably to (you but stronger) at the ass end of the game, assuming I don't just get spun on by a giant flower.

I like the game aesthetically: the concept of one pilot piloting three ships, each one going through the stage along different routes, and the bosses changing or having variations between that route is cool
I like the dumb story (as I'm in general always going to be a sucker for phyric/Downer endings like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQsoAVXsMwE)

I like the gameplay. The break laser is really awesome and so are the beam clashes, no real "powerups" pleases my gorilla brain, and the game steadily thumbing the screws has always meant it never gets boring for me.
I really really REALLY fricking like stage 5's boss (on the assumption that I don't constantly head the turrets off by breaking them) so you're constantly beam clashing and moving for your life.

I like the remix mode, where basically every stage goes breasts up and if you play on the ship for masochists all the music is different incentivizing you to git gud (which i'm not) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpqH6wrtNxo
I love that mad fricking scramble when your routing goes to ship and you have to claw it back because something changed somewhere along the way and the bullets are in formations you have to raw react to.

In other words. I love the game.
Was the second OST I ever imported too.

Good players try to act like there are some kind of methods to improve, but they’re always extremely obvious shit like
      >plan your route
      >use bombs
      >watch replays
But the real answer is that you just have to keep playing them over and over. If you don’t enjoy the basic gameplay while failing and learning a game, there’s not much to be done to change that.

        > plan your route
        > use bombs
        > watch replays
        I would say:
        > Watch for the gaps and move opposite direction of the bullets.
        > most patterns to dodge are a variation of op. direction, down, up.
        > Play it safe, don't engage if you can.
        > Memorization is good but sometimes you have to know how to react on the fly, so improve your finger speed for dodging or your arcade stick movement speed if you play on one.
        > Try and do deep breathing exercise to de-stress during gameplay it can get very hectic: In-Out-In-Out (nasal breathing, no mouth breathers allowed) 4 counts each, this is called fourfold breath, a lot of militaries use this method,.
        > To get your finger speed faster: Try and touch your thumb with each finger to certain BPM until you get good enough with that so you can match around 120-160bpm, the games might require 200bpm rhythmic tapping.
        > Rhythmic Tapping: This technique relies on the background music and whenever you move, you TAP ONCE to move per direction, no holding down the buttons to move so you get super-accurate movement.

In Japan there are some new titles being released in arcades through the exA-Arcadia but even there they are dying out. The recent clear of DoDonPachi SaiDaiOuJou after 12 years has caused some curiosity to be rekindled in Japan, however, so maybe there could be a chance of a resurgence.

No, shmups have been getting torn down from arcades ever since early 2000s. There exists a small japanese list of arcades that may or may not have some shmups (usually it's only 1942 or some sequels and DOJ). It's gotten worse since 2019 many older, less popular arcades have closed down.
As other anon mentioned, there is exa arcades, which long story short was made by a israelite contributor from mame that was stealing PCBs and fricking over a lot of people, and he made the move to remove Akai Katana and SDOJ from Mame so he could make OC do not steal revision of the game and sell it for like 3k for fanatics and arcade owners.

on weeks it's usually at 3/4 capacity but spikes during lunch hours. Weekends are always at full capacity and DDR/In the Groove/Pump it Up weebs camp outside the game center a couple of hours before opening so they can lock one machine for themselves (and they're always the ones who stay until close time). I'd say business is good if you take good care of the machines and develop a system to filter Black folk. This center has a bunch of guards and arcades use a card system instead of coins.

The only reason why CAVEcucks can't emulate all their games is because CAVE are cheap scumbags who used old as frick hardware ridden with slowdown to cut costs, which is very difficult to emulate properly.

Probably the same reason they went with Xbox 360. It was probably marginally cheaper, so they ported their games to 360 even though the Japanese userbase (where vast majority of sales would be) was a tiny fraction that of the PS3. Oh, and 360 has a fricking awful d-pad as the kicker.

what a dumb picture. games on the left are "mechanically" simple but they're way harder than anything in the center. and on the right we have games that are supposedly "too hard" for most of the players which is why palworld or starcraft sold only several million copies or so. meanwhile the center games are absolute slop, they're no way harder than say super mario you just fricking watch gorillions of cutscenes and then let the console heashot for you.

The genre died when it stopped being about surviving and overcoming challenging levels and bosses with a unique aesthetic and interesting gameplay systems, with a score system tightly interwoven with core gameplay. It changed to being some flowery, homosexual bullshit where you play as a little anime girl but with a 1x1 hitbox, and now instead of learning enemies and stage routes, you memorize exactly how to weave through these giants clouds of bullets shot by other anime girls, and now gameplay is all just about le big score number, with giant ass tokens and multipliers obscuring the entire screen. And you have to chain all the green enemies and leave alive all the purple enemies, but then sometimes if there is seven purple enemies in a row, you can kill them alternating with green enemies to get a super secret combo chain multiplier, and then you go on this specific pixel during this frame and uncover the super-ultra hyper that makes your per-second score increase while in use but decreases your score from enemies, but this is reversed when you're using the wumbo gun. But then if you're using the mumbo gun, both of these bonuses are removed and you get an epic graze bonus for going near enemy bullets, but this increases the rank which increases the per-second score but makes the game much harder.

It's just a braindead, disjointed mishmash of mechanics and systems hastily thrown together that feels very arbitrary and artificial, but autistic people eat it up.
