Probably not. Obsidian in 2024 is not the Obsidian of 2010 and 2011. Also, Bethesda's more interested in rehashing the same exact basic plot beats in their Fallout games (and now the TV series as well) over and over and over because their brain-dead audience keeps bankrolling new installments regardless of overall quality or rather, the lack thereof once you peel back the surface. Anybody who truly cares about Fallout knows that only 1, 2, and New Vegas are canon anyhow.
Traditional CRPGs with action combat were a failed experiment. Both Bloodlines and New Vegas were released in an completely broken state and the actual combat was mediocre. Such a heavy emphasis on dialogue and quests takes away from the action. Deus Ex had the right idea in simplifying the dialogue and focusing on pure gameplay variety.
Larian also had the right idea with BG3. They made a traditional CRPG with all the modern innovations of 3D games, but but the combat and dialogue were more like a classic Bioware/Black Isle game. Menawhile nu Bioware has been shooting themselves in the foot by trying to turn Dragon Age 4 into a fricking Soulslike.
I always felt this was the best way forward.
They could keep the core writing and not piss off the fanboys or desecrate a classic, while bringing it to a newer audience that is too spastic to play a crpg.
They'd never do that because it's actually a decent idea though
1 and 2 remakes would be simple. Just make the desert full of radiant quests and design a handful of narrative random encounters. Not that much effort needed. Honestly surprised they haven't done it at this point
I disliked Fallout 4 when it came out but I played it for a bit until about halfway through the main story to give it a chance. It was so long ago I'm estimating I was somewhere between 20-40 level wise. I filled out about 75%of the map too before giving up.
I acquired it again with all the DLC and I think I just made it to to level 5 and I'm about to drop this turd for good. While the physical movement is better along with ADS just about everything else sucks and is super boring. I think the main thing that kills it is the lack of combat depth that NV had.
New Vegas had traits that made your character feel distinct as soon as you started and gave your build an actual archetype. It also had way cooler perks that you even got earlier. Four has few interesting perks that actually changes the way you play - namely pain train - and they take forever to unlock so by the time you get the "archetypal" perks that make your character feel distinct you're already a God due to flat damage type perks you're required to get and you don't need to use thier ability because you probably already faceroll everything you see with a bleed minigun you found on a fly. Player characters in 4 barely feel distinct and by the time they do the game is largely over.
Also, it's it me or did enemy AI actually regress from NV to 4? They use to rush you or stick behind cover and now in 4 AI does this stupid thing that someone probably thought was "realistic" where they sit there peeking thier head around a corner not shooting. It turns most combat between humans into just me and them sitting behind a wall and me just doming them because they don't fight back, they just peek over and over allowing me to headshot them.
That's the funny, hilarious thing about Fallout 4. It feels better to play, yet so shallow and unfun.

Lets say the stars align and a competent team gets to work on the next Fallout game. Where should it be set? Would it be a continuation of the West Coast? The East Coast? Or a new location?

Dallas, New Orleans or Seattle would ve the best options IMO. All 3 of them are separated enough from previous locations that they could do whatever they wanted with factions and story. Plus, all 3 have tons of famous landmarks/history and unique geography and wildlife to make exploration fun and include new monsters. Plus, all Fallout games have been on East or West Coasts, having one smack dab in the middle of the country (ignoring Seattle) would be interesting to explore.
Nashville and Detroit are lesser but still cool options.
Probably not. Obsidian in 2024 is not the Obsidian of 2010 and 2011. Also, Bethesda's more interested in rehashing the same exact basic plot beats in their Fallout games (and now the TV series as well) over and over and over because their brain-dead audience keeps bankrolling new installments regardless of overall quality or rather, the lack thereof once you peel back the surface. Anybody who truly cares about Fallout knows that only 1, 2, and New Vegas are canon anyhow.

Traditional CRPGs with action combat were a failed experiment. Both Bloodlines and New Vegas were released in an completely broken state and the actual combat was mediocre. Such a heavy emphasis on dialogue and quests takes away from the action. Deus Ex had the right idea in simplifying the dialogue and focusing on pure gameplay variety.
Larian also had the right idea with BG3. They made a traditional CRPG with all the modern innovations of 3D games, but but the combat and dialogue were more like a classic Bioware/Black Isle game. Menawhile nu Bioware has been shooting themselves in the foot by trying to turn Dragon Age 4 into a fricking Soulslike.

I always felt this was the best way forward.
They could keep the core writing and not piss off the fanboys or desecrate a classic, while bringing it to a newer audience that is too spastic to play a crpg.
They'd never do that because it's actually a decent idea though
1 and 2 remakes would be simple. Just make the desert full of radiant quests and design a handful of narrative random encounters. Not that much effort needed. Honestly surprised they haven't done it at this point

I disliked Fallout 4 when it came out but I played it for a bit until about halfway through the main story to give it a chance. It was so long ago I'm estimating I was somewhere between 20-40 level wise. I filled out about 75%of the map too before giving up.
I acquired it again with all the DLC and I think I just made it to to level 5 and I'm about to drop this turd for good. While the physical movement is better along with ADS just about everything else sucks and is super boring. I think the main thing that kills it is the lack of combat depth that NV had.
New Vegas had traits that made your character feel distinct as soon as you started and gave your build an actual archetype. It also had way cooler perks that you even got earlier. Four has few interesting perks that actually changes the way you play - namely pain train - and they take forever to unlock so by the time you get the "archetypal" perks that make your character feel distinct you're already a God due to flat damage type perks you're required to get and you don't need to use thier ability because you probably already faceroll everything you see with a bleed minigun you found on a fly. Player characters in 4 barely feel distinct and by the time they do the game is largely over.
Also, it's it me or did enemy AI actually regress from NV to 4? They use to rush you or stick behind cover and now in 4 AI does this stupid thing that someone probably thought was "realistic" where they sit there peeking thier head around a corner not shooting. It turns most combat between humans into just me and them sitting behind a wall and me just doming them because they don't fight back, they just peek over and over allowing me to headshot them.
That's the funny, hilarious thing about Fallout 4. It feels better to play, yet so shallow and unfun.
Hell, if you want a janky looter shooter, Fallout 76 does it better, frick, it even does RPG better at this point, hell, it even does what you ask for - feeling distinct from each other because you kinda HAVE to specialize

I wanted to replay 4 but they've shoved out so many pointless updates that completely skullfrick all the mods and the vanilla experience is just too terrible for me. like its kind of sad I'd rather go back to 3 instead just because the bugfix and QoL mods aren't all broke to shit because bethesda is moronic
sadly no, the fact that the normies liked the show while that work was so disruptive of the lore but it was so good to boost the sales of the shitty Bethesda games like Fallout 4 and 76 is a death sentence for the fans of the old games. We will never see a game like NV and we will never see a continuation of what made the original games great.
