The screenshots are cool and give the impression that there's lots to explore, but it's probably smaller than it seems and empty. Still would love to play around in it.
My guess is that they couldn't justify the size of those beta maps at the end of it for either gameplay or performance purposes.
I believe they were trying to measure how big they could get before it either looked like shit due to fog excess or the console lagged well below the target 20FPS. After than, then just scale back and down. I'm more surprised they bothered redoing the grass and ground textures.
They probably envisioned it as being a much faster paced game, and probably also intended to fill the giant areas up with stuff.
But hardware and development limits surely made that original vision unfeasible. If the console had been a bit more powerful and they hadn't needed to restart development like 5 times they might've pulled it off
I think they just realised they had made the areas too big and they had nothing to fill them with. They probably started making kokiri forest then realised it really doesnt need to be so big
>but it's probably smaller than it seems and empty.
i think it depends on whether this build was meant to be playable to the public or not.
for all we know the beta town in OP's pic could've just been a street with some buildings if it was never meant to be used for anything more than footage for promotional media.
If we did, you'd be disappointed. Those old screenshots look enticing, but in reality they were very empty and incomplete. The beta maps we do have prove this. They are nice as a window into what the developers were more or less thinking about adding into the game at that point in time, but no more.
>If we did, you'd be disappointed. Those old screenshots look enticing, but in reality they were very empty and incomplete. The beta maps we do have prove this.
The Beta maps were interesting as frick and weren't disappointing in the slightest.
Dungeons had entirely different designs that were only missing actors which iirc was due to the overdump.
Finally being able to explore the beta graveyard, ganon's castle and lake hylia was amazing.
Once cracked open the PC could send any kind of predefined packet.
So PC scanned the chat messages for specifically those with "Here together" in their text ignoring the rest (very subtle really, obvious filter so that there wouldn't be sth like "Hitler did nothing wrong!" in the stream if EVERY message was parsed), took the name and info about status icons in the chat and sent it to the N64. The payload had a specific function to process these packets.
Considering they would only use the specific message "Here together" they could prerender it and the Twitch icons as objects and then probably to save bandwidth only sent the names and corresponding icons via the controller ports.
I really dislike the deception. They're not "finding the Triforce" they're literally programming it in and pretending to find it, and following a fanfiction along the way. And they keep saying it's unmodified when the entire point of ACE is to modify the game. It's no better than your average romhack.
It's the same shit as "hurr durr we found Luigi 24 years and 1 month later hurrrr le 2401 meme". It's all social manipulation to make people feel more special
at the end of the gdq beta presentation they DID say it was all mostly a joke. only about 30% of it was legit beta content like the exploding rupee and great fairy. say what you will but what they did with the mail man was kinda perfect. i can totally see the fight really occurring.
they were just flexing that they made the rom hack in real time. once they turned off the N64 all of that was lost on THAT particular cart.
i dont know... i think i prefer the wide open idea more. sure its more empty but theres enough there for a childs mind to fill in the holes. like we KNOW there were trees of various sizes, shrubs and rocks littered all over that field. a dense, dark hue like the opening to majoras mask. the final areas are very enclosed and dont leave anything to the imagination. i understand how they came to the conclusion by retail but i think the beta openness could have worked.
The Triforce gives one the ability to change the world. The Goddesses just left some loose ends that granted access to it by vanishing rocks and looking in specific directions.
>I really dislike the deception.
Par for the course with zoomers who are conditioned to act repugnant in order to "please" the algorithm of big ad companies.
BotW is just the latest game, so it's not surprising those would be the models chosen to showcase. And the Twitch chat integration was just icing on the cake to showcase how they had absolute power over that realm

It seems they also got Zelda Eng. and Link Jap. VA to say those lines

Why did they feel the need to state which language each character was speaking

For the complete brain dead people on Twitch, which is approx. 95%.
>If we did, you'd be disappointed. Those old screenshots look enticing, but in reality they were very empty and incomplete. The beta maps we do have prove this.
Not quite, because pointers were changed and objects/actors were changed or outright removed (i.e. how En_GirlA became the shop data despite having an npc name) we just don't know or have what was supposed to be on those maps. The many, MANY pointers at the big ol' Hyrule Field must be for trees that no longer exist in the final game.
>Those old screenshots look enticing, but in reality they were very empty and incomplete.
You're basing this off when they were first hacked in via the 2020 Gigaleak and 2021 Overdump. Play the SW 97 Restoration mod.
I remember the window texture was found in either the Gigaleak or the F-Zero X Overdump, wonder if the map was apart of the latter before F-Zero X overwrote it
comparing the texture to the screenshot, the texture has a shading, so it's probably from the latter A+C period of development (the game taking shape but still no child Link).
It was cool up until towards the end. Then you realize it's essentially a ROM hack they create in real time using the TASbot inputs. Which that in itself is cool, but some of that stuff they essentially just pulled out of their ass.
Yeah, I got what they were doing pretty early on since I'm familiar with ACE, and on a technical level it was mighty impressive, but they could've been much more transparent about the intention of the video. But of course, they muddied the waters to drive HOYPE and donation bux, so par the course for GDQ.
I might be wrong, but I don't think it's that different from the dusk skybox in the final game outside hyrule field, when it gets purply for a bit before the navy blue nightsky comes.
One thing I really want is a hack with the medallion powers in it. The beta restoration hack was a great way of getting to play around with them freely, but it would be amazing to have a version of the full game incorporating them.
It should be noted that the beta maps and some sprites like the mines didn't actually come from the gigaleak. There was a development cartridge found that had F-Zero on it. But F-Zero was only half the size of the cartridge. When the full cartridge was dumped, it was found that there was a half-overwritten beta build of OoT on there. Unfortunately only maps and some sprites were recoverable. Models, music, code, all would have been in the first half, overwritten by F-Zero.
The gigaleak did have some beta elements like models for the early octoroks and iron knuckles. There was partial source code.
When you stop touching yourself at night
What a bizarre thing to say. Do you splay all your limbs out like a fricking starfish at night?
Yes. Yes I do. It gets hot.
stop pretending to be autistic, you know what metaphors are
it wasn't a metaphor
it's just a random thing to say
and i don't think that's bad, i say it sometimes, but it's just cause why not ya know
why would i want to play this garbage when the real game is 10x better?
Don't you ever look at fuzzy screenshots and just want to explore them?
Things aren't really complete in beta builds.
No
Looks a lot more barren too
Good, then it's like a real town. People aren't just FRICKING standing AROUND normally.
Whatever I imagine it's like will be 100x better than what's actually there.
That's the actual appeal, truly.
Town in this shot looks a lot bigger than Castle Town.
i hope so
that'd be cool
The screenshots are cool and give the impression that there's lots to explore, but it's probably smaller than it seems and empty. Still would love to play around in it.
I don't know. A lot of the beta maps we have are really fricking big for no good reason
I see a really fat Pepe in the thumbnail there
For frick's sake, I can't unsee it now.
frick
I thought that's what it was originally.
Now someone has to draw it for real, maybe eating some lays chips
They probably envisioned it as being a much faster paced game, and probably also intended to fill the giant areas up with stuff.

Gotta make a move to a town that's right for me
Town to keep me movin'
Keep me groovin' with some energy
Well, I talk about it, talk about it
Talk about it, talk about it
Talk about, talk about
Talk about movin'
Gotta move on
Gotta move on
Gotta move on
Won't you take me to
Betatown?
Won't you take me to
Betatown?
Won't you take me to
Betatown?
Won't you take me to
Betatown?
>beta town
yeah it's called /vr/ lmao
haha gottem

Not that anon, but finally watched some of the beta content that got leaked and you're right, this is really cool.
That was my thinking too
Skip the ending
As someone who spent way too many hours reading triforce hunt threads on GameFAQs back in the day, this is awesome.
Nevermind, just watch the whole video
How exactly does the Twitch chat part work?
Once cracked open the PC could send any kind of predefined packet.

it's just a bit of fun bro take it easy
To be honest I hate when people have fun.
at the end of the gdq beta presentation they DID say it was all mostly a joke. only about 30% of it was legit beta content like the exploding rupee and great fairy. say what you will but what they did with the mail man was kinda perfect. i can totally see the fight really occurring.

mindbroken
>cool little skit about reaching the Triforce in OoT and confirming playground rumors
>suddenly jumps to BotW pandering and Twitch chat integration
I was a little mad. But everything else is pretty good.
BotW is just the latest game, so it's not surprising those would be the models chosen to showcase. And the Twitch chat integration was just icing on the cake to showcase how they had absolute power over that realm

I mean its cool to see but I was actually expecting a playthrough where they were able to uncover hidden stuff within the game
>If we did, you'd be disappointed. Those old screenshots look enticing, but in reality they were very empty and incomplete. The beta maps we do have prove this.

Population: OP.
will we ever get a thread by a non-homosexual OP?
I remember the window texture was found in either the Gigaleak or the F-Zero X Overdump, wonder if the map was apart of the latter before F-Zero X overwrote it
Wait, really? Do you have the texture?
Here you go
sweet thanks
comparing the texture to the screenshot, the texture has a shading, so it's probably from the latter A+C period of development (the game taking shape but still no child Link).
Anybody watch that beta showcase at GDQ last night? It was so cool seeing all that beta stuff still on the cart!
>sit at console with ntsc 1.0 OOT cart
>obtain the triforce
how is this not a frickin’ sticky?!?
It was cool up until towards the end. Then you realize it's essentially a ROM hack they create in real time using the TASbot inputs. Which that in itself is cool, but some of that stuff they essentially just pulled out of their ass.

I'm actually sad this wasn't one of the leaked maps or available in the Overdump.
Still hoping one day for a proper Zelda 64 leak, pre child Link.
>beta town
Is that where your dad’s from?
That skybox is the most soulful thing I've ever fricking seen
I might be wrong, but I don't think it's that different from the dusk skybox in the final game outside hyrule field, when it gets purply for a bit before the navy blue nightsky comes.
I wish the guy behind the gigaleaks wasn't such an autist. He had access to Nintendo's stuff for two whole months and barely took anything.
One thing I really want is a hack with the medallion powers in it. The beta restoration hack was a great way of getting to play around with them freely, but it would be amazing to have a version of the full game incorporating them.
only if anon learns corporate espionage and steals all the betas
All these huge beta maps scare me for some reason, might be the emptiness, the feel that there's something missing
For me, it's not so much the emptiness as it is the expectation that suddenly I'll turn around and it won't be empty but full of spooky shit.
any list of all the stuff from the gigaleak?
Just in general, or only OoT related?
It should be noted that the beta maps and some sprites like the mines didn't actually come from the gigaleak. There was a development cartridge found that had F-Zero on it. God fricking damnit I have F-Zero
hate. I fricking hate F-Zero.
