it does suck that Steam is going to stop supporting these versions of Windows, but I also don't see how they could strongarm every single dev that sells on steam to accept selling installers that can easily be shared or somehow keep up with the eventual backlog of Windows versions that will have to be supported.
Really, that's the reason that most games don't come out on GOG. Some people won't just give up their games like that in an age where they can be reuploaded to everyone easily. Not an ideal situation but hey that's the problem with digital distribution, if anything lawmakers should have stepped in before companies started just selling you an I.O.U. for your games.
Also, in what way is Steam forcing you to use W10/W11? Valve themselves has made a concerted effort for games on Linux through proton because of the Steam Deck. And wine emulation has gotten heaps better, to the point where some games even run better than on Windows. Linux isn't perfect, I definitely don't want to use it as a daily driver but for games it's getting there. You could easily dual boot a Linux distro and keep Windows 7 if you really wanted to.
I don't understand why anyone is trying to make this out to be Valve's problem when it's Microsoft that has stopped supporting their own OS. Valve isn't forcing you to use Windows at all.
