It's hard to pick a favorite, they're all good (except Fusion).
3 has the best art design, 2097 has the best atmosphere, Pure has the best music, Pulse has the best tracks, and all of them have the best team (FEISAR).

They made Qirex look like absolute shit compared to the 2097 design

Idk, it looks cool on the cover but ingame I find the design a bit too murky, its kinda just a dark blob so maybe the colours are the problem for me.

            I am moronic tho

Yeah it's quite dark in the game unless under strong lighting, but that makes it even cooler. It also looks sleek and sharp and a bit alien, while the 3 version looks like some kind of troony tank.

      Favourite is 3.
I also like HD Fury but not retro.

      Fusion deserves some love.
It is the worst , but it is not a bad game.

the ps3 and onward games are so good. they really nailed it imo. also i love the high-pass filter effect on the music whenever you go over the jump

2097 is still my favorite though

I seem to be in the minority on this, but my favorite soundtrack is the first one.

I had an N64 and I only ever played that one level from 2097 on the first demo CD at my friend's place back in 97. Absolutely loved the atmosphere and the aesthetics but had no idea who was behind it. I got into Warp records around two years later and I really liked when I learned that TDR had been working on Wipeout.

3 SE is my favourite, it has by far the most content and Sasha's tracks are awesome. 2097 is also really good and is the most difficult imo. 1 is solid but a little clunky, love the OST though. I also like modern wipeout, but it's really a different game.

Also Fusion would be so much better with weapon absorbing, I don't really like floorhugger physics though.

    3 > 2097 > HD/Fury > Pure > 2048 > 1 > Pulse > Fusion

is the first game worth playing? just redownloaded 2097 ready to get my shit pushed in

You can beat it in an hour or two with Feisar/AG Sys if you're reasonably good, the game is designed to heavily punish wall impacts so avoiding crashes is more important than trying to optimise your lines/maintain speed, as the AI isn't that fast itself (same goes for 2097). Silverstream is horrible though and if you want to get anywhere with Qirex or Auricom you'll have to be very good with opposite braking and thrust control. I'd say its worth playing for sure.

      >3 is obviously the most stylish

And it lacks soul because of it. It's too clean, over-refined.

      >is the first game worth playing?

Absolutely. It's not as polished as 2097, but it's pretty much the same game. Was a launch title in Europe, that I remember playing on Demo 1 in 1995. Blew my frickin' mind to have something so amazing in my living room.

it's weird, from the uk but i honestly never knew there was a first game (always assumed 2097 was the first)
        i'll download it, cheers

Odessa Keys onwards the levels are designed by Satan, they were not fricking around.

I've started with very first game about a month ago. Went through it, 2097 and 64. So I'm at Wipeout 3 now.
So far my favorite is the first one. Despite the physics and subpar soundtrack, there was something amazing about its atmosphere. Absolutely loved playing as Kel Solaar as well, shame most of the later titles madedo without pilots.
2097 absolutely has the best music so far.
Ship design overall is not my cup of tea, I prefer something like Conquistador ships from Redout, or something like flying cars from 5th Element... But I represent Qirex, so anything Qirex (or Tigron) will do.
Definitely not gonna stop at retro titles. Maybe even will buy PS4 to play the latest titles at max.

      >Wipeout 1 OST
      >subpar

My brother in Christ, Messij, Cairodrome, Cold Comfort, Chemical Beats, Afro-Ride...? It's definitely more out there but the big beat/trance vibes are out of this world. 3's OST is goated tho.

I think Fusion gets a lot of necessary disdain from people, it's fine racer. Just not a real Wipeout game

    XL is great though

I think the main issue with Fusion is the focus on combat while keeping pitlanes. Playing Van-Uber on some tracks you are marking yourself for death, weapon absorbing should have come a game earlier. The physics are definitely unique within the franchise but they couldn't just make the PS1 games over and over. IMO Fusion walked so that Pure could run, modern wipeout definitely feels like a mix of the retro games and Fusion's physics.

In this game? I went straight for the AG-SYS, but new players to the franchise might struggle with its shield.

I went straight for Qirex but that might be because I played a lot of Mario Kart with Bowser.

Be warned, Redout isn't really much like Wipeout. It's still a decent enough game but doesn't scratch the itch for me.

So I'm playing W3 now and is it me or is analog harder? is there any upside in learning analog or is D-Pad incontestably better?

      Anonymous

Dunno, I've completed even the furst game with the analog (emulator). I mean, it's a racing game, why the heck would you want to play it with a D-pad - I have no idea.

        Anonymous

Too many quick, twitchy, sharp turns, often in opposite directions, I don't know but it doesn't feel like the kind of game where you make full use of analog capabilities. In Phantom difficulty of course.

I found the dpad to work pretty well playing 1 and 2097, you'd think that the game would be designed around it being on the PS1. I tried it in HD though and I couldn't get it down.

Never played 3 cos I dont have it, might have to emulate it.

For 2097 on PC, is there a way to restore the PS1 soundtrack? Can't really find anything online. Also what a difference compare to emulating, feels a lot smoother.
