With the recent wave of blatant AI shilling, let me remind Ganker that no sane dev will ever consider utilizing it in a video game. It’s a minefield of legal issues and blatant art theft.

Lootboxes and TOS are also a legal minefield but the funny thing is someone has to have billions of dollars to sue in the first place to have any shot of winning.

On the one hand, haven't some recent games been called out for literally using AI generated assets?
On the other hand, they're being called out for it which hopefully indicates that the practice isn't going to be considered acceptable.

It's a small matter of time before everyone is using it, though we need to wait a bit for viability and to see how the current legal cases by authors and artists (YOU TRAINED ON MY WORK or something) plays out, probably in favor of the AI companies, and at worst they'll just feed the models public domain shit or stuff the company already owns.

It will be considered acceptable, normal, and expected very soon. Adobe even has their own art generator they're encouraging users to use for commercial works, all the training data is either public domain or owned/licensed by Adobe

I feel like people always gloss over the fact that AI art suffers from not being able to think about things. It depicts stuff without consistency, because it doesn't know what things are, because it doesn't 'know' - it's an autocomplete.
        Look at

why is there a nostril missing? Because it doesn't know what a nostril is. It lacks any fundamental understanding.
That's why the images it creates are "dream like" because it's creating things without knowing how things work.

That and it's also currently incapable of replacing the work that professional artists can produce. You ask the AI for something, and it gives you something vaguely related. If you have more than 2 or 3 characters, it immediately turns into spaghetti. It's cool what you can get for so little effort, and the random quality it returns is part of the fun. It gives the whole process a sort-of slot machine addictive quality. But it is not suitable to professional work. If you need several images of a single original character doing different things, with consistent features and outfit, you will immediately hit a brick wall. The AI can follow your instructions on like 3 to 5 different details about a character, and then it fills in the rest.

Maybe this changes in 2 or 3 years. Maybe not. Whether or not working artists are fricked comes down to if the technology keeps advancing as quickly as it has been, or if it's beginning to hit diminishing returns.

Clearly people should keep rallying towards banning AI so we can save the precious starving artists while corporations flood the market 50x as hard because the laws don't apply to them.

Maybe we shouldn't just throw up our hands and accept that laws don't apply to corporations or rich people.

Here's how it'll happen in the real world. Company has a written policy that using AI isn't allowed, then it gives it's wagies deadlines and workloads that would be impossible to meet without using AI. Wagies use AI, tick a box somewhere saying they didn't use AI, and the company winks and nods.

AI is depressing to me in how it's the result of creativity becoming a business instead of a passion, with buttholes who don't understand a single thing about what makes art so fun and rewarding trying to "fix" it with automation, removing any passion from something so uniquely human.

People might get upset when you call a hobby that they're messing around with 'shit' without really understanding it properly.
I've fricked around with AI art, generated over 3,000 images, and in my opinion it's pretty amazing. It takes a lot of time and proompting to get a good result, you can't just press a button and have something that looks half way decent.
A good "real" artist should embrace it and use it to enhance their work or save time. Unless they're povo AMDrones in which case I get the seething about AI art.
I also don't care what people think of it, if it's worth its weight in salt it will be implemented wherever possible and there's nothing anyone can do about that.

You stupid fricks, using AI for art is not an all or nothing. There is a scale of how much you use the tools from zero to a pure text-to-image gen.
Puregens have an inherent ceiling that I don't really see improving anytime soon. The actual good shit will be made by artists that can use things like controlnet well or go through piles of concept art instantly.
