Hairstyle looks wildly out of place compared to every other character.
Being one-armed was Zul'jin's gimmick. Having another character like this removes his uniqueness.
Those little half-elf ears are very ugly in my opinion.
I find it hard to believe a character who is both blind and unarmed on one side would be capable of fighting effectively. Demon Hunters aren't actually blind btw.

It's a character that somehow exists from a white guy with a white wife, while also being in a universe where mechanized prosthetics exist, making her having no arm completely pointless and actually a stupid character decision. Also the fact that she's a half elf and Blood Elves are white solely because their skin was bleached by the Sunwell and they live more in the Sun, they're basically Sun Elves in comparison to Night Elves, it's the entire point that their skin is white, which also makes Blood Elves getting black skin options to be incredibly silly.

If not for those things I wouldn't honestly care.

Depends on how much integrity you are willing to have for your fantasy war story. I could probably accept a black colored female Paladin, even if she was a cripple, and maybe if she was blind, though she would probably not be serving in the war effort anymore. The hair doesn't fit at all in the setting, so it'd be a stretch. But making her black and also a relative to a prominent lore heavy character that was very white and loved by fans? And then making her into a new and shiny half-elf hybrid we never saw until now after several decades of gameplay? That's just taking the piss.

Even the ESGmaxxing of modern industry aside, some degree of lorerapes tend to always happen with whatever long running IPs. I don't think there are any long running fantasy universes where the consistency and integrity has been preserved beyond the core works set in it and perhaps some still careful expanded works.

It is a potpourri of tropes and 180 degree tropes.
    The armor makes no sense.
The face is unappealing and lacks personality. It is blank.
Does not respect the rule of 3rds.
Is generally soft, lacking detail, and has conflicting design elements, such as soft whites and slopes interrupted by thing and long spikes and a chain that looks like barbed wire, which doesn't fit with the rest of the design.
Color scheme is cookie cutter and desaturated to fit in with trends from 10 years ago.
The boots look stupid and the notion that a warrior with one arm would have such a large pauldron restricting his movement range is unintuitive and nonsensical.

The general form of the armor doesn't fit the purported function, and the design of the character itself.

  42. 2 weeks ago
    Anonymous

It’s jarring because Lothar himself wasn’t black or half-elf, his lineage wasn’t black or half-elf, and no known relatives were black or half-elf. The only currently guessed lineage is that Faerin is instead Taria Wrynn’s daughter and sister to Anduin Lothar - lothar just happened to be white and no half-elf while Faerin is both. Since the WoW film depicts Taria as black, this leads to the conclusion that Taria Wrynn was an unfaithful Queen who slept with, at the very least, an elf out of wedlock. In addition, if this is the case than Faerin should be SIGNIFICANTLY older, as she would be Anduin’s great aunt. The most likely reason she isn’t is that Blizzard will claim that, since she is a half-elf, she ages slower, which is a dumb excuse to make Taria Wrynn (who isn’t a half-elf or elf herself) a canonical cheater, a bawd, if you will. The most offensive thing about her character is that she is a half-elf. Missing an arm is old news (Zul’jin), being half-blind is honestly milquetoast, and her armor is genuinely good. The haircut reeks of donutsteal Afrocentrism-chasing, but that isn’t unique to her character but rather how Blizzard handles race as token monoliths rather than depictions of people in a medieval setting. In general, making it so most races can be half-elf is really stupid for entirely different reasons that somewhat destroy the uniqueness of the few half-mixed individuals while also making no sense for half of the races the option was added for. Finally, it is strange that she has the last name of Lothar, as she most definitely isn’t a Lothar - she is at best a bastard using the last name to carry the legacy, which I guess is fine but also sits very weirdly.
    >tl;dr
Faerin being black isn’t the biggest issue, it’s her being half-elf and retroactively making her mom a prostitute.

Given the whole backstory of the zone she's from is quite literally.
A group of Arathi found themselves underground after following the guidance of a magical crystal, that's likely to be a Nauru.
The entire zone is now filled with Half Elves and not pure Arathi, despite the Northern Kingdoms getting their shit kicked in for 30+ years.

Then yes, it's quite literally likely that it's some long lost Lothar up the family tree, that made the move, settled down and had this chick. And that's probably the narrative they're looking to go for, given they made the conscious decision to make them all Half Elves.

        Anonymous

Except no one in the Lothar line is black, nor elf/half-elf. The Lothar line traces back to Thoradin whose only known descendants were white humans, with Faldir and Anduin Lothar being the last of the known Arathi lineage, the latter being the literal last of the bloodline. There are no known elves that carry the last name Lothar, nor would there reasonably be due to how last names are generally carried down by males or through maiden names. The only way Faerin is a “Lothar” is through being a bastard (in the literal sense) or through adoption. Since Taria is black, this would explain part of her appearance, but the half-elf does NOT work, as Taria herself was not half-elf, and neither was Lothar. In the two scenarios, either Faerin is: black for the sake of being black with no relation to Taria and just happens to have had a previously unknown Lothar sleep with her black elven mother to create her, of which nothing is mentioned, or that she is a bastard of Taria Wrynn and half-sister to Lothar, whose mother slept with an unknown high elf (as blood elves wouldn’t of existed at this point, she isn’t half-night elf, and she isn’t half-troll). Blizzard wrote themselves into a weird corner by not making her black, but rather making her a half-elf, as it paints Taria in a terrible light. Either remove the name “Lothar” or remove the ears and the problem for the most part goes away.

Aren't these a splinter group of arathi that got stuck in caveworld somehow? Couldn't that have happened ages ago and one of their original group was some irrelevant Lothar between Thoradin and Anduin, maybe even a second born son or something? And that Lothar could have met, plowed and impregnated one of those black elves that have apparently always existed as of a few years ago

            Anonymous

This creates even more questions than answers, ultimately. No known relatives of Thoradin’s line are known to have gone missing, and mind you he was considered royalty after the Troll Wars. While a splinter group of Arathis going missing is fine, a member of the royal lineage going missing would’ve been a bigger deal, especially one that would have its roots currently traced through Stormwind’s royalty. Thoradin’s initial human kingdom splintered, and his line went south to found Stormwind, not across the western sea, somehow missing Pandaria, into Khaz Algar. On Wowhead, it explains that this splinter group is NOT directly related to Thoradin nor his direct descendants - this ultimately creates a paradox with the character of Faerin: she cannot be a Lothar, yet is named as such. If she is a Lothar, daughter of Taria, then what is she doing in Hallowfall? The same interview from the devs in which we’re told that the Arathi in Hallowfall aren’t directly from Lothar’s lineage also says that they somehow ended up in Khaz Algar BEFORE the initial kingdom splintered. The entire character is a headache that reeks of the writing team not understanding their own IP. Either don’t make her a half-elf and keep her as a bastard Lothar who found the lost Arathi tribe somehow, or don’t make her a Lothar and she can be whatever donutsteal the devs want her to be.

The surname Lothar should NOT be anywhere within the tribe. Unless the devs are openly lying in their interviews (which wouldn’t be a first I guess) then the character does NOT make much sense at all, unless the last name is an adopted moniker, but that would also be stupid and adding confusion for the sake of it.

Humans are old-god tainted descendants of Vrykul who are old-god tainted creations of the Titans in their image and used to be stone pre-Curse of Flesh which all originated from Northrend which is the opposite of hot. This is similar to the Earthen, except they weren’t created in the image of the titans, but rather as a slave-caste. Warcraft doesn’t have a genuine reason for the existence of different ethnicities, unlike for example TES which uses race as ethnicity (Nord, Imperial, Redguard, etc). In fact, WoW uses its different races as caricatures of real-life races, for better or worse, which is extremely funny considering that, in WoW, Asians were fat furries who almost exclusively practiced kung-fu and worshipped animals until Shadowlands added the Asian option for humans.

I've no sympathy for Warcraft purists who complain about muh mmo retcons and then still try to claim WC3's canon.
You lot didn't complain about retcons, when people travelled west and found a species of Elves that was always there and that were more savage than the Orcs, better at magic than the High Elves, more in-tune with nature/the Gods than the Trolls and had a more successful Empire than the Humans. And they were totally the race that first ever interacted and defeated the Burning Legion.

People no longer come from a place. The humans of WOW are all specifically meant to hail from a single region, that being Elwynd Forest or whatever. They now have a myriad of different ethnicities and appearances - with no explanation.

Fine, whatever you might say it allows players to customize their characters in ways they were unable to before. That would be the case if it didn't occur at the same time as, say the paintings and statues being changed in Wow and in Diablo 2 remake - every other character in Overwatch being made gay despite having no impact on gameplay and there being no story. We already know they are all in on DEI so everything Blizzard does has suspect motives.

This character will not struggle due to their infirmity, they will not be allowed to fail outside of the incompetence of others who will not be minorities in appearance and they will take the center role of every scene they are in despite potentially sharing it with established demigods that will almost certainly praise their actions.

      >2) Her one eye and one arm are not there for the sake of ticking a box, it's evoking classic samurai and swordsmen tropes, the one armed swordsman is timeless. Her entire schtick is being a classic samurai but while being a hot woman at the same time
      >3) Her missing limb is actually incorporated into her fighting with inventive sword fighting and hidden weapons in her empty sleeve
      >4) She's actually a cool character and anti-hero, not a cheesy inspirational figure, and her femininity is treated in an interesting way that doesn't diminish it.
      >5) Her ethnicity is also not there simply to tick a box and otherwise complete ignored, it informs her character, being one of the few Japanese people left in the game's world and thus her samurai schtick also serves as her keeping connection to her lost country's memory.

Now, all we have of this character is a datamined model and name, and nothing about their role and character....but can you really say you expect to easily fill five points like I just did for Baiken off the top of my head?

Wrong. Japanese are super special in Guilty Gear and significantly superior to every other Human to the point where the few left are flat out demigods with how much power and strength they possess. Why do you think May could tote around that giant anchor when she was 12? She has super strength, because she's Japanese. It's a Japanese made game, why would you be surprised that the Japanese are the special people in the setting?

Her missing eye and arm not only are factored into her fighting style, but they serve as a permanent, eternally present reminder of her family's massacre as a child, which drives her whole character, a quest for revenge. Do you think "Faerin Lothar" is going to feature a similar consideration or will her missing arm and eye be mentioned once in an offhand manner, and then never mentioned or factored in again, except for developers to bring up to point to as how inspirational and respectful it is and how they consulted with experts for it?

That's not to say an amputee character's role has to revolve around being an amputee (especially if they're a soldier and that's the cost of doing business sometimes), but you know, ignoring it is almost the same as making it their only trait, because even if it doesn't define them it's still a significant thing and ought to affect them on some level.

Tokenistic DEI negresses and Japanese characters are two entirely different things. You can seethe, you can cope, you can nitpick in vain attempts to make dishonest comparisons but we can all see this character for what she is. A token tickbox character made using a literal skull measuring tool being inserted in to the medium to score brownie points, if she were a roleplay character during the period when WoW wasn't complete shit she would be rightfully laughed out the room as a disgraceful Mary Sue you would expect in Goldshire with the term 'valeborn' for race.

Dishonest character design. It's not for the sake of the game, story, lore, worldbuilding, character or even the fans, it's for the miserable, butt ugly creator to shove their politics down everyone's throat and jerk themselves off over. If they'd make their own shit from scratch then whatever, but they don't, they just infest and destroy because they know nobody wants their shit and the only way for people to consume it is to force it into things people do care about.

Unironically they find it hard to correctly model black hair. That short style or the increasingly infamous Killmonger hairdo is a shortcut to supposedly looking "ethnic" (as opposed to giving a black character Caucasian looking hair) but also super easy to model and animate. A lot of black people mock that hairdo's overuse.

Which is why ultimately this stuff doesn't matter, the addicts still playing this game will not stop no matter WHAT Blizzard does, so it really won't affect anyone who matters. A Black wearing this outfit would be like the orks in LOTR driving around in cars instead of horses.
It destroys any suspension of disbelief.
It would make more sense to protray their kind as savage cannibals or something, which would be much clloser to real life and more in line with whatever this game SHOULD be. Dress it in rags or lioncloths - not this.

They live on "Black"rock mountain. It's a reference to the company Blackrock that are the ones that put blacks in videogames.

Most people already find black coded characters evil in the first place. Also might I mention there's only one "good" black dragon. Clearly they didnt want to paint all the black dragons as evil which is rather inclusive. The rest were obsessed with breeding as much as possible and taking over the white men human lands.

they are evil because it's fantasy and they needed something evil, not becaue Black folk in real life are evil.

Also they are black dragons and not brown dragons, as africans are not black but brown.

                >so stupid they started a genocide on a alien planet
                >get enslaved by Chad humans

In Grom's defense, he's the son of the stupidest orc who ever lived, so he's got that working against him. The fact that the race backslides into fel abuse literally every time they get the chance speaks volumes against them, though.

She's datamined with a tower shield. If she has a magical prosthetic arm, she's pretty cool.

What really bothers me is the blind eye. Like was that necessary? She already has the arm thing going for her. A character should only have one physical deformity tops or the design is too busy.

She genuinely looks like a parody of a "woke" character crossed with the OC donut steel super special characters of old we used to mock.
    >half-elf, so double the special backstory
    >also black
    >modern zoomer haircut
    >one eye and one arm to be double-crippled
    >badass female warrior who probably still beats everyone despite being double-crippled
    >androgynous armor that fully covers her up from the neck down and obscures her actual shape as much as possible
    >looks young, but probably has achieved things and holds authority well beyond her years
    >hitherto unknown daughter/descendant of a legendary character
Just all the special characteristics some hack deviantart writer could come up with crammed into one.

Yeah the fact that they made this character somehow related to Lothar is a big red flag, if you have to try and attach an existing character to your new character in order to sell them, they are by definition a failure that you don't feel confident enough in to have them stand on their own.

Distinct races and nationalities are represented for the sake of "inclusion," but the irony is that they are wholly deracinated and stripped bare of any distinguishing characteristics beyond mere pigmentation. Thus, they are not at all positive representations of their real-world equivalents, but rather blank-slate aesthetic preferences that are directly reliant on the source material to provide them with their flavour.

But, in the case of World of Warcraft, the source material is largely comprised of tropes originating in the Western (European (white)) canon - spanning from antiquity to the medieval period - and so the representations of different races end up being a European man/woman with a different smattering of paint on them, as is so perfectly demonstrated by the character in the OP.

Why is this a bad thing? Other than being a denial of basic reality, it cheapens the aesthetic and immersive quality of the game world, and furthermore fails in its intended ideological goals, also. I would be for racial representation if it was done in a thoughtful manner, which funnily enough it was in the case of WoW and its various anthropomorphic playable races.

There's also the argument that donning a black woman in a suit of armour that is inspired by European tradition is an act of provocation, a la "Queen Charlotte" on Netflix, carried out by the resentful sheboons and Latinas that are responsible for making video games nowadays, but I personally don't think you have to make such an explicit argument for the OP image to serve as an example of poor game design.

As others have mentioned, it would not be so bad if they were explicitly from some land of their own. Look at Guild Wars Nightfall for example. It was top to bottom blacks but people loved it because it was unique and respected the culture it was trying to portray rather than trying to make it something it wasn't.

The problem is the fetish people are aware of that, so they demand ever more of the real life characteristics of races from the real life will be transferred into the game. The result is they will have someday some kind of black guy who likes fried chicken and water melons for the sake of coding him black properly.

Indeed, it's kind of funny how they are just "there". Their race plays no role whatsoever. That's not to say you have to be solely defined by your race, or they have to all come from "The Black Zone (20-28)", but total denial of it existing even while supposedly being more "inclusive" by dotting around more characters with black skintone only really makes them stand out more, as you say, they're effectively just white characters with paint on them.
