You basically have three potential Southern US regions:
>Eastern Seaboard, using some combination or part of Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. Lots of variety, heavy focus on forests, mountains, sea, and swamp, lots of famous urban areas and history to use. I doubt they'll reference the Civil War directly even if it and its after effects is one of the central cornerstones of the region's identity and history in reality
>Gulf Coast, using some combination of Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana. Can also potentially include eastern Texas. Much bigger focus on swamps and forests, potentially including the Mississippi as a central regional feature with a lot of travel/trade along it as you explore the region, giving an entirely new flavor to the region. Culturally and historically has a lot in common with the above, but also its own unique flavors (like the heavy French influence.)
>Florida. Florida is like the above two with more Spanish influence, they can also reference all the old people retirement shit and Disneyland etc. Florida can be part of either two of the above regions but is also big/famous enough to be turned into its own region, so I feel like I can include it.
Worth noting there can be some trade here. Eg Georgia and Tennessee being part of a Gulf region, including Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia in a Seaboard region (really depends how BIG of an area they want to cover) etc.
When people say 'the south' they mean 'the old south', aka the southeast below the Mason-Dixon Line. When people mean the former Mexican territory they usually call it 'the Southwest'. Note that Texas and Oklahoma (the Indian Territory at the time) most commonly and Arizona and New Mexico (also territories at the time, not states) occasionally also get included in 'the South' because of their allegiance to the Confederacy during the Civil War, but this gets less common as time goes on.
I like how maryland is technically "southern" but delaware isn't due to the mason dixon
Delaware has a unique history, it's worth looking into if you ever have the time. Weird little state.
Louisiana could be awesome!
I particularly like the possibility of using the Mississippi as a central regional feature/avenue of travel, which makes me want to include its entire length and not just the Southern portion. That said, almost any region COULD be awesome, if Gamefreak bothered to give it a respectful or a least fun treatment (unlike what GB and Spain got.)
Anon, I hate to tell you this, but NC and Georgia are in the top ten for state population (both well over ten million), the fastest growing states economically, near the top in regards to population growth, and a large number of your Hollywood movies and TV shows etc are now partially or entirely filmed in NC or Georgia. I can talk all day about whether any of this is GOOD or not, but those two states at least are NOT unknown or unimportant anymore, it's not 1920 anymore. NC in fact recently got a state visit from the Japanese Prime Minister who toured the entire state and its industry, which massively increased awareness of the state in Japan. And if Gamefreak is going to make make a region based on NC and Georgia, there's no way they won't include Virginia and SC at least for region shape/size, if not more. Also calling Louisiana (via New Orleans) unknown is silly, New Orleans is one of those internationally famous cities despite how bad it is in reality, so it is also a possibility as somewhere Gamefreak might want to explore (and this, again, invites the possibility of the surrounding states for region size/shape/variety.)
