Just because classic wotlk and bc failed to bump player counts doesn't mean WoW is alive due to modern and dragonflight. This whole "stabilization" mentioned in the chart is clearly because of classic players as shown by the major bump caused by another classic content drop.
The numbers themselves could go either way except everyone hates modern so it doesn't make any sense that it would have more players than classic

That's partly because it released a couple of months after classic WotLK. The rise in the graph from people entering DF is dampened by the people leaving the initial WotLK launch.
Similarly you can see the TBC bump being small because it launched when SL was in its deathspiral, when actually the launch was pretty big

unfortunately blizz likes ilvl inflation. they added MORE inflation in 10.2. normally the current mythic tier ilvl is equal to the next patches normal tier ilvl. 10.1s mythic raid ilvl was equal to 10.2s lfr raid ilvl. they added an extra 13 ilvls to 10.2 just for fun

I had no way of targeting legendaries I wanted, I thought the AP grind and daily quests felt like busy work, and I spent 4 lockouts during ToS without a single fricking tier piece because it was all personal loot now in raids. I fricking hated Legion because it wanted me to play daily because I couldn't get the legendary I wanted so I stopped playing.
Shut up moron. Legion was shit with systems designed to make you play everyday to get what you actually wanted. If people actually liked Legion's systems they would have liked BfA and Shadowlands more but they're hated.

Legion was a long time ago now, there are a lot more potential players out there, especially if you factor in every kid getting a pc thanks to the coof. I don't even think this is necessarily it, it's just games have a longer lifespan in general now, used to you bought a game played it, that was it, move on to the next game, mmos were something of an anomaly in that they kept updating for a fee, now though you buy a game and if the dev doesn't include ongoing updates for the next 2-3 years it's considered a scam and review bombed
or to put it another way mmos expect you to stay in the same world for 10+ years while they drip feed you content, when the system starts to feel old you're still expected to be there, modern games also drip feed you content but they very clearly cut support before they ever start feeling dated, you get your content for 2-3 years and then move on but with none of the baggage of mmos

The mechanics for both are completely different.
plunderstorm was a good idea on its own it just shows the weakness of the actual gameplay though, everyone moving at the exact same speed just makes battles boring and the few spells they have in it are just huge aoes that involve everyone running in circles, also maybe it's just me but max zoom on modern wow is just too much for visual clarity, when my character is reduced to a couple of pixels chasing down a couple of other pixels on a dark/drab background there's no real way to tell what's going on, but at the same time you need a huge zoom out scale because every spell is so fricking huge
I'm not going to pretend I'm a game design expert but it seems like there were very obvious solutions to fixing pluderstorm that they just didn't put in (a sprint/stamina meter for one) but things like the visuals being a mess are just wider problems of the game at large needing to be tweaked for modern times, I shouldn't be watching my character from space twirling in a circle every fight

Zoom and post that full set if you can, I want to see if it's also just a spraypainted on texture like most WoW stuff. The tortanic armor isn't spraypainted on,the shirt does fit very thinly above your character's chest however, you can tell it's not spraypainted on if you're playing a woman, as it actually squishes the breasts down. Here's another good example of actual effort put into armor and not just lazy spraypainting, also from the same gigaflop!

WoW sets are just overpowered by their shoulders and helms. It's made worse by most sets looking like something your character carved off of the wall of the raid. The last sets I really liked were the Legion ones that were like remakes of old sets.

Is SoD worth getting in to as a fresh player? I played vanilla through cata and stopped at mists, and I've been getting that MMO itch again. I've got a couple of irl buddies that have been playing SoD, but they're already max level. I'm afraid I'll sub for a month and not even hit the new level 50 cap when the patch comes out and miss out on raiding with them.

I think the undyable armor is due to a limitation in WoW's engine. In theory they could provide the tech for newer stuff, but they're too content with just releasing tints on different difficulties to try to drum up interest in players going outside of their preferred difficulty.

I don't think the damage done by BfA/SL can ever be repaired completely and it's pretty difficult to say what kind of numbers retail/classic have on their own.

Legion was a long time ago now, there are a lot more potential players out there, especially if you factor in every kid getting a pc thanks to the coof. Between that and the obvious inflated stats due to bots and wow tokens, "back to Legion peak" is not a thing to brag about. WoW should ideally be back to peak BC/WotLK level, if not higher.

Couldn't get back into wow, quit at BFA launch, tried DF and got to 70 just wasn't into the raids or aesthetic. Story didn't feel good either. It's funny to see that wow remains unkillable after 20 years but it still just doesn't appeal to me anymore, not sure why.

How could they be anymore? People get way more invested in a single game than they used to, so first to market has way more power than it did in 2004 or even 2016 when OW came out. I don't even think this is necessarily it, it's just games have a longer lifespan in general now, used to you bought a game played it, that was it, move on to the next game, mmos were something of an anomaly in that they kept updating for a fee, now though you buy a game and if the dev doesn't include ongoing updates for the next 2-3 years it's considered a scam and review bombed
or to put it another way mmos expect you to stay in the same world for 10+ years while they drip feed you content, when the system starts to feel old you're still expected to be there, modern games also drip feed you content but they very clearly cut support before they ever start feeling dated, you get your content for 2-3 years and then move on but with none of the baggage of mmos

Plunder Storm is in a broad sense what I wanted though. Inconsequential side content that doesn't contribute to "number go up" that you can do if you think it's fun and just ignore if you dislike it. Pretty much like how XIV treats fricking everything they do.

plunderstorm was a good idea on its own it just shows the weakness of the actual gameplay though, everyone moving at the exact same speed just makes battles boring and the few spells they have in it are just huge aoes that involve everyone running in circles, also maybe it's just me but max zoom on modern wow is just too much for visual clarity, when my character is reduced to a couple of pixels chasing down a couple of other pixels on a dark/drab background there's no real way to tell what's going on, but at the same time you need a huge zoom out scale because every spell is so fricking huge
I'm not going to pretend I'm a game design expert but it seems like there were very obvious solutions to fixing pluderstorm that they just didn't put in (a sprint/stamina meter for one) but things like the visuals being a mess are just wider problems of the game at large needing to be tweaked for modern times, I shouldn't be watching my character from space twirling in a circle every fight

I'm surprised they haven't. Classic has shown people will play to pay an old version of the game. It only became an issue when content patches were spaced far and people meta games too hard. But give it time, hardcore is still fresh enough and most people won't get through it, but we soon as it gets stale, they can easily just advertise more classic. I'm personally not going to fall for it, but the demand and itch that WoW players get is easy to exploit for profit.

The tortanic armor isn't spraypainted on,the shirt does fit very thinly above your character's chest however, you can tell it's not spraypainted on if you're playing a woman, as it actually squishes the breasts down. Here's another good example of actual effort put into armor and not just lazy spraypainting, also from the same gigaflop!

I barely know how 3d modeling works but it baffles me how little content wow is pushing out. How long does it actually take to make an armor set? I bet you could make a set every week or 2. How many artists are working on wow? What are they actually working on all day? Youd think there would be hundreds of new sets every expansion but theres only like 5 per class

WoW sets are just overpowered by their shoulders and helms. It's made worse by most sets looking like something your character carved off of the wall of the raid. The last sets I really liked were the Legion ones that were like remakes of old sets.
A lot of chests do have 3d elements now, but I think it's a few reused templates for 3d chests not sure I ever noticed any 3d stuff on pants.
my favorite part about wow armor is how the evoker has customizable accessories for their base form to make up for not being able to wear anything but shoulders, with like 3-4 color options and even then NONE OF THEIR TIER SETS MATCH THOSE COLORS

Is SoD worth getting in to as a fresh player? I played vanilla through cata and stopped at mists, and I've been getting that MMO itch again. I've got a couple of irl buddies that have been playing SoD, but they're already max level. I think the undyable armor is due to a limitation in WoW's engine. In theory they could provide the tech for newer stuff, but they're too content with just releasing tints on different difficulties to try to drum up interest in players going outside of their preferred difficulty.
