I know plenty of people with dozens, some with nearly every race-class combo in the game who are balanced with casuals who only play on one character on one server. So assuming the lower number of characters average and the highest number of active characters,we ONLY only arrive at 1.2m, with the most generous estimates. The truth is likely lower than 1m.

As someone who played XIV from 2.0 to current expansion, it's a shit game. The gameplay is beyond stale at this point. It was already mogging WoW's combat, but slower and less flexible at launch. It's done nothing to spice that up, only really making classes play even less flexibly than before with stiff rotations and burst windows.
The story is it's strongest point but the presentation is garbage and they haven't done much to improve it since 2.0. They still play the same few songs to convey moods. The cutscenes are just back and forth camera angles, weird unnatural walk cycles, and the same handful of reused emotes. It's incredibly difficult to sit through the often 30 min long scenes where basically nothing happens. They can't even be arsed to make class unique animations for your character to do things in the story scenes, often leaving that to NPCs to save dev time on having to do more than make your character strike an existing combat pose and glare menacingly. The story also has pretty much run it's course and the new direction they're trying to take it isn't remotely as interesting as what came before.
The charm of it being Final Fantasy is running dry, too. Frankly FF as a series has been shit longer than it's been good at this point, and they've already done lots of nostalgia baiting on the older FF games.
Plus the cash shop has completely subsumed all fun cosmetic gear and emotes at this point. You get maybe 1 or 2 things tossed to you here and there over the course of a year, meanwhile a dozen or so cash shop outfits and emotes get made that could've been fun holiday events or tie-ins.
I'd play it but I have noone to play with. Guess that's the thing that killed this game, lack of social aspect. Everyone plays only with their clique. Try for example to find some decent team for pvp. It's impossible. The ones who play are either complete and utter shitters or those who only play with their closed circle of friends.
I guess same applies for raids and troony+
MMOs are long dead, nobody cares about them.

I do not think there's a single competent, masculine man left in the entire Warcraft universe as it currently stands, and the Horde doesn't even have a Warchief anymore.
This isn't even going into the fact that MMOs are a dying and stagnant genre, in general, as well. What's the point of playing a game that destroyed its own lore and that feels horrible to play? It's not fun to interact with the world and it's not fun to play the game, what does that even leave you?

People just want a massive RPG to play in, it should be obvious that no one actually wants to socialize or play with other people, every time an "MMORPG" focuses on single player content it does well with its audience, and anytime they try to focus on group content they bomb hard. Developers should've realized years ago the only people who still play this genre play it for the same reason people played old RPGs, to hack'n'slash their way to cool loot and build a character (or characters) over time. People who actually want a social experience play other games more suited towards that kind of thing, or simply go onto social media.
This is completely wrong. I've been playing classic lately and the only reason I'm doing it is because every single time I log on I have unexpected interactions with complete strangers running elite quests or dungeons. Playing with others is the point of MMOs and a big part of the appeal of classic wow where interactions like this were encouraged by the game design.

Shadowlands killed both the lore and any interest in the game in general. WoW will never recover.
The only way you could recover WoW lore is to retcon Shadowlands out of ever happening. And Blizzard won't do that, so the game is never going to be what it once was. It's amazing they managed to top WoD, which was when they went off a cliff and decided to a time travel and alternate dimension expansion just so they could recycle WC2 characters since they had cannibalized and destroyed all of the WC3 characters and stories by that point. Then Shadowlands happened and we see what current day Blizzard does when they finally run out of things to recycle from the RTS series, and thus ended Warcraft.

Shadowlands broke the hold over many players that were just going through the motions for the last few expansions without really enjoying them, they quit the game and will not be returning regardless of how good an expansion supposedly is.

I'm pretty sure WoW is dying because it was put in maintenence mode about 6 years ago, as the actual talent on the mmo team was transferred to work on project Oddysey.
Blizzard replaced the original team with absolute morons who care more about safespaces and identity politics than gameplay.
If Oddysey succeeds they will slowly gut and fire WoW team, until they shut WoW down or just do low effort shit like Classic and Hardcore.
And if Oddysey fails (which is possible because Blizzard is chasing a 7 years old trend of survival mmos and that ship has sailed away years ago) then they will cancel the whole thing within 2 years while returning to WoW.

Content wise he's not wrong, if you actually look at the amount of content Dragonflight has it is cutting back. Only four new dungeons, which is the lowest ever, recycling old content and dungeons for M+, and shrinking the amount of raid bosses is not "more content than ever". In fact the biggest things Dragonflight sold to new players were the removal of grinds that, while annoying and irritating, were a big chunk of dev time.
Consider the time and effort that went into Tor'ghast and consider then that there is no equivalent in Dragonflight. Dragonflight has the lowest amount of content a WoW expansion has ever had but Blizzdrones eat it up because they're so sick of their game that Blizzard removing garbage features counts as an improvement of the game, even if it results in less content overall.

BFA & SL were both massive content droughts that almost killed the game. The new devs finally got their shit together around DF but the damage was done. Their new mega dungeon is coming without new raid or area.

Never happened to anyone with a brain. By the time I had to swap covenants just doing the covenant campaign gave enough renown for everything. The covenant campaigns alone were better and more interesting than the entire Dragonflight main story.

levelling is fun but end game is really trash
and unfortunately they made levelling reallly fast and killed the mmo feel with all the portals so yea

it's true for every mmo, FF14 feels fun while you're levelling up unlocking all the content, becomes pretty boring once you're caught up. WoW has really nice levelling in the vanilla areas, but doesn't want you to do it and gets MEGA ASS at endgame. ESO has amazing endgame but absolutely abysmal endgame combat. GW2 has fun as hell levelling but gets stale after awhile at cap. The only MMO I can say gets better at the maximum level is classic FF11.
I have no social connection to the game anymore and don't have the motivation to build up a new core circle to run with, which is the only way to really enjoy the actual endgame content. Queueable stuff like LFR and single player stuff gets stale too fast and requires no pulse.
The game is in a good place technically, but lots of people have just moved on to other things due to the 3 previous expansions having so many burnout-inducing systems or just being awful.
none of my friends will ever go back to WoW because the setting is "too gay" now.

It's a Euro ESL thing. WoW is proportionally a lot more popular in central, eastern, and northern Europe. It probably took them by surprise that there was another MMO that was even successful when the bald moron played it on stream.

I knew some people irl who's first and only video game they've ever played was WoW, and I knew someone in highschool who was in a "WoW family". i.e. the family views WoW as an event and all share an account and all obsess over WoW and the parents had a horde themed baby shower.
FF14 is pretty much the only MMO that has stayed rather successful instead of dying after a few months. If the past 6 years of WoW hadn't been complete dogshit, they could've just existed together in peace and people wouldn't care. But for some reason, WoW players get super defensive when XIV is brought up instead of blaming their own devs for turning WoW into shit.
