Quitting during shadowlands was the best move I could have made. I wish I had done it earlier and that I had never started, but now so much time has passed that even if I wanted to start again (I don't) the thought of having to catch up immediately removes any interest no matter how faint.

Same, quit two months in. Then several months later all that blowout happened. Going back to remove joke lines and painting and whatever seems like a small deal, but the fact that so many people at Blizzard are willing (giddy, even) to go back and do all that means they're the type of people I'd rather not give my money to ever again. Life's better without any MMOs really, gives me more time to spend on games that deserve it (like how I finally got around to playing all the Dragon Quest games except X over the last couple of years)
Same here. I went to XIV some months before the streamers did during shadowlands but I despise its community and only ended up staying for the story finale and until I had completed my fishing log.
Going back to WoW I got quite demotivated by the amount of shit I had to catch up with and the writing and quests taking an even further nosedive in quality did not help either.
I was back to farming old content within a day and did so until my game time ran out.
In a way I am happy that I am free from the game, but I can't seem to get into new MMOs anymore and barely play vidya at this point.

Yeah I think WoW just isn't for me. I love FFXIV's endgame because there's tons of stuff you can do that don't involve dungeons, but that game has many shortcomings that make it less playable than WoW

I've played ffxiv for 1700 hours. I've cleared p1s to p12s, thaleia, most criterion dungeon, extremes including Golbez and Zeromus and last few recent Unreals. Honestly pass trough all story campaing without skiping. Tried some casual activites. And realized that even tranniefurry shitlands better than this weeb game. Ffxiv is not even a MMORPG. It's just the big bunch of QTE. This game feels like OSU or other rhythm shit. Loot means nothing except passing through dps check. You character didn't changes with gearing him. Savages and extremes are hard as frick, and ultimates even harder. When you clear it you feel hollowed. Ffxiv sisters tells that this game is for chilling, but that's a lie. All endgame content is about parsing QTE raids. And community is much toxic. They never forgive you even one mistake. And they can't bear any criticism about they gorgeous game. There is only 2 ways of playing ffxiv. Ass sniffing in Limsa Lominsa and qte raids.
In worlo you can clear heroic, you can make keymaster, and receive full experience. Yes there is so much shit with timegates, moron, furries, stupid story, ridiculous alt hate systems, but the core content is available for all levels of player skill.

LuckyBancho has long been an accepted accurate census. It gathers total player numbers across 2-3 month periods for any player that does basically any activity in the game that affects their account, i.e. anybody that does more than just log in and AFK is counted. The census count has been in the 1.1 to 1.4 million range for well over a year now, and since that's a total count across several months it means the actual sub count is even lower. Those numbers are slightly higher than the tail end of Shadowbringers pre-Wowfugee exodus
Steam is also not a huge platform but its numbers line up with LuckyBancho, slightly higher than end of Shadowbringers pre-exodus
LuckyBancho only tracks who gets pets or other cosmetics from the leveling questline. Basically the amount of characters at level cap. And it doesn't take into consideration alts or anything so you can slice that number AT LEAST by half. And now count the people who actually do what very little content there is to do in the game and you'll maybe have ten thousand unique players at the very most.

This is the first time that's actually been true. Even Shadowlands had a couple of minigames/activities tied to the Covenants, Torghast solo achievements, and Zereth Mortis's relatively complex mount-crafting systems to work through. DF pruned all of that. After you do your main game content for the week, there's no casual side stuff or solo challenges to work on (so there's nothing to talk about).

It feel very forced to me, by that I mean the mode is popular because of Streamer hype than the game mode itself standing on it's own being enjoyable. It's around for only 6 weeks so there's that at least, but the streamer shit is also why Hardcore exists and why it's now dead, and why Sod season 1 popped off and Season 2 died.

The average WoW player is over 30 years old at this point - most definitely male - and missing the days where mom brought them a coke and pizza while they were hanging out with the boys in Azeroth.
Those players don't want new content - they want their childhood back. And each new character they level is the chance to make new friends and contacts and experience some sparkles of what used to be their childhood.

You don't have this with any other MMO outside of Runescape - which also had the split cause nobody fricking liked the new version of it..

Yeah it probably does have more players, the game has been around for ten years longer. But the game itself is pretty bland.
I lost all interest 4 years ago in the game with Shadowlands being the absolute worst expansion to date, that on top of all the political shit, the internal drama with WoW every week and the community being massive fricking spergs. The fun, the spark of what made it enjoyable was gone and it felt like a second job grinding out alts.
Finally I got sick of pic related, the fricking UI bloat in Retail is so fricking moronic. Shit, how can any of you play this and say with a straight face you don't think there's anything wrong?
Classic is what WoW is period. Most people are playing Classic. Only occasionally leaving to check out what slight other variation of Classic Blizzard is currently pushing.
Retail meanwhile is only relevant for the first week of its release where it makes record numbers for Blizzard - in one way or another - but then everyone drops the game quickly cause nobody can be arsed to do any of the endgame bullshit that Blizzard is coming up with. Mythic is dead - the raids are overdesigned trash that require you to install 200 addons - nobody wants to do this shit. Not to mention that the new shitty lore isn't really making people care about the events either.
So after a few weeks of new retail expansion those players either enter hibernation or they move to Classic where players are actually doing shit.
