If you want to get mad at Valve for killing something, you can at least leverage like half the blame on them for killing basically every TF2 subcommunity with the quickplay and matchmaking updates during gunmettle to Meat Your Match.
Half the blame being that the competitive community and youtubers took advantage of the fact that some of the CS:GO employees were over "helping" with TF2 and didn't realize that they were in fact, trying to kill the other 90% of the playerbase that genuinely can't fricking stand them.
gaudiness is the appeal, you get a big glowing "LOOK AT MY MONEY" sign on your favorite hat
same thing applies to Stranges, just more vanity to display when shooting people
It really doesn't get any more complicated than long ago people arbitrarily decided that the burning one should be the most valuable.

Literally they just decided that keys should cost 4x as much metal because of the Very Scary Halloween Special (Or the Monoculus update) featuring INCREDIBLY minor reskins of series 2 unusual effects. (2 recolors, and 2 featured a new sprite on an old effect)

The color doesn't match the mercs' team colors and it'll always bug me because of it. Painting it still leaves the truck unpainted and sticking out like a sore thumb
Paints are literally fine, and the issue is more that workshoppers are too fricking lazy to make more subdued paint regions on their cosmetics (Which is something you can do, in less than a minute) >BUT EVERYONE WILL OPTIMIZE FOR SPECIFICALLY THE UG-
