Probably not. FF7 was anime as frick but you can still see the drift towards realism. Of the PS1 series of games, FF9 is the only one noticeably cartoony and whimsical artsyle. And I think people responded to that. Games like FF7 and MGS got a lot of attention for how movie like they were which was unheard of in video games and it continued into the PS2 generation. If FF stayed anime it probably would've been left behind.

FF has been left behind already, it's a dying franchise and the only part of it that is still kind of culturally relevant is an MMO. Nobody under the age of 30 cares about the series as a whole.

Yeah it's left behind now. Doesn't mean Squaresoft didn't have the late 90s and most of the 00s by the balls. It wasn't until the early 10s that FF's dominance over the JRPG scene started to be questioned. And by the late 10s and all of the 20s, FF is like JRPG's bumbling racist grandpa. It hangs on the porch and sometimes you can almost see how great it used to be but it's clear those times are over and you'd like for him to stop shitting himself.

It's a dead franchise, same as Halo, same as Street Fighter, same as Sonic, same as all boomer IPs, no one cares about them anymore except delusional millennials and boomers.

The only company that still has relevant boomer IPs is Ninteno, and that's because tendies are just as delusional and brainrotted as the s0ilennials and boomers are.

the "art style" of bland realism in the remakes is one of the most disappointing aspects of its design

The action is fine, but the cutscenes and the world are weird as frick. You have these anime characters LARPing around next to regular people and it just doesn't blend. When the anime is isolated, it's great, but if you try to put it alongside Unity store NPCs, it's bizarre.

What I like about the Remake characters is that they look like the hypothetical real people that the cartoon versions were based on. If you were going to draw a caricature of Cloud on the right you'd come up with something that looks like Cloud on the left.

Beautiful. It really feels like they captured the atmosphere of a lot of the environments.

They said were frustrated working at both Square and Namco because of the lack of creative freedom they had. They also hated Square's management over Final Fantasy

Popular or not, FF really should've stayed cartoony. Chasing realism fricked them in so many ways during the PS3 days and they never recovered.

      Anonymous

The problem with the PS3 days was the stupid ass Fabula Nova Crystallis bullshit that was never going to work because one party hijacked the budget to make he waifu real, the other kept changing his mind as to what the frick Versus was supposed to be every week, and I can't even remember what happened with Agito which turned into Type-0 which I didn't play but I'm sure the circumstances that made it are equally stupid. SE got so caught up in trying to redefine something that they forgot to just make a game.

        >and I can't even remember what happened with Agito which turned into Type-0 which I didn't play but I'm sure the circumstances that made it are equally stupid.
There really aren't "circumstances" beyond what you can see at face value. It didn't make significant progress until XIII-1 was nearing completion because the handheld game that was supposed to be a phone game was obviously the lowest priority when it came to engine feature development, at which point SE panicked at the reception to XIII and wanted to distance the remaining FNC titles from poisonous branding.

Realism is a cancerous plague in gaming and it always has been unless you're making some sort of sport or simulation shit.

  16. 1 week ago

I'd like to believe so but on the other hand the mass market gets a hard-on for their realism stuff. Plus the remake and 16 go for that slight stylized look we'd sometimes see in older games like MGS or RE which came close to looking like real life people, maybe even using facescan, but since the technology wasn't that strong yet you'd still get something stylized. I think it's more a fault of other aspects of the art direction. Look no further than the moogle in the remake. That's not even a fault of realism, that's just changing the design to look like a koala for no good reason.

  17. 1 week ago

Honestly no, I feel like the stylized realism look made it stand out compared to other jrpgs more

The art style was an integral part of the humor, and in trying to preserve that charm and whimsy while at the same time fully transitioning into a hyper realistic art style they (probably unintentionally) shattered the soul of the series. In the past they still had enough talent and freedom to create such unique worlds that it wasn't as noticeable, but even in FF10 you could see the cracks beginning to show.

That's not FFX, that's the butchered "remaster"

They kept the sovl intact, but it just begs the question even harder: how the frick does Aerith's mom have such a nice house in the slums when everyone else is living in Mad Max metal huts? The more detailed you get, the less you can handwave anime shit.

        Anonymous

People were asking that even back in 1997. It's not a new question just because Remake looks more realistic. Personally I was amazed at how faithful they managed to be. I was expecting garbage but when I saw the reactor it felt like they took the OG renders and made them real. Even the lighting they got right, which isn't just drab blues but has some "heat" to it with reds and yellows. Things I was afraid they'd fail to reproduce but they pulled it off.

It's the scene that's pertinent to my point, not the textures. In a more cartoonish style with text dialogue it wouldn't have been awkward whatsoever.

It's already not awkward. The problem has always been the audience not understanding intentional cringe.

    It doesn't matter
FF never stopped having an anime artstyle, but if you're talking about 7's in particular it wouldn't mean shit because every FF has a different artstyle due to every game having different art directors.
Amano's art isn't the same as Nomura's which isn't the same as Yoshida's so forth and so on.
Besides the problem with Final Fantasy after the early 2000s was never the artstyle, that's historical revisionism. The problem is that every FF after X has some major design flaws among other things like bad art direction, shit characters/stories etc.
