would getting one of these and hacking it so I can run emulators itch my /vr/ scratch?
I'm looking for a low-cost, portable, all-in-one /vr/ emulator box that can run retroarch.
Seems like this guy can do everything but n64/Saturn faithfully.

Why not get a Vita? The only thing that sucks about it compared to the Switch is that there are no additional triggers or whatever they are called, L2 and R2. Judging by what people say the PSP and by extension the Vita run PS1 games natively

It's usually cheaper to get a Switch and the Vita is rather underpowered in comparison.

Is it? Then get a Switch I guess but I've heard it's a pain in the ass to hack. I'm tech-illiterate and even I could hack a Vita

      >Why not get a Vita
does it have good hdmi out?
I do not need it to be a handheld, but I do need it to be easily portable.

Vita's are really great to mod. In response to this guy's L2 R2 propaganda, they do sell shells for your vita that give it L2 and R2 triggers with grips as well.

Been using it for emulators for about 4-5 years now. It's perfect. Make sure you get yourself a V1 model. They're the only ones that can be softmodded.

You can tell by the serial number on the bottom of the switch.

As for emulation it runs everything up to Dreamcast and PSP pretty flawless (except Saturn)

Love my modder switch. Honestly tho for the $$ you'd be dropping, i think one of those Chinese handhelds would probably go farther.

Not for nothing, I expect the Steam Deck will probably be the best emulation machine once all the right software gets released.

    >retroarch
The online updater isn't able to fetch the core list, or update anything for that matter. Anyone else run into this problem?

No I updated my cores just yesterday

It should be able to. Have you updated the actual retroarch program itself?

You can always just manually grab the .nro core files and drag and drop update them yourself instead of the updater.

        ran into that issue too
had to redl the thing for it to update

thanks anons. i'll play around with it some more tomorrow. I figure just manually getting the cores themselves would be just fine but y'know, laziness and convenience and all that

Unless you already have a hackable switch (not all switches are easily hackable) I wouldn't recommend it. You're better off just getting any chink handheld or a Steam Deck or something.

like a Wii, its only really worth it if you already have one laying around

Just get a cheap or used android phone with semi decent specs and you'll be good up to almost ps2.

If you're at this sort of size anyway, any reason you're not going for a Steam Deck, or one of the larger anerbic type models that are a bit more setup for wider emulation?

Steam Deck is waaaaay overpowered for what I need. Also too expensive.

My title is misleasing - I have zero interest in being able to play on the go. I meant portable so it’s easy to throw in a backpack/light/small but no I don’t need it to be a handheld. Easy video out to TV or monitors is all I need.

There are a lot of relatively cheap Chinese android boxes on Amazon with Emulec or other front ends installed that have rom dumps of "10,000" games or whatever.

I bought one for like $80 (pic related) and it's not bad. It uses retroarch as the emulator for everything so there's flexibility in the settings and the core you use, and you can use save states. Definitely not as good as a personally curated collection on a device you set up yourself, and there will be some games that don't run or need tweaking (sometimes you can replace bad roms or isos) but if you're looking for something portable that "just works" with hdmi out then you could do worse. Just make sure you do your research and buy a decent one, as the specs vary wildly.

the vita is underpowered and the deck is overpowered. What are you trying to emulate? Your phone can't do the job?
