I notice that among everyone talking shit about Disney, even the unfounded stuff that was later shown to be unequivocally false that they still repeat like claiming he was a nazi/anti-semite.
It's always someone among them trying to make claims on his life's work.

The truly impressive thing Walt did was not really as an artist but as a businessman and it was choosing to produce Snow White. Many people seem to not realize this anymore, Snow White invented the concept of feature length animated movies. They did not really exist before Snow White. People thought Walt was crazy to spend so much money up front on such a "wild" project. And now animated movies are a multi-million dollar a year industry. You could argue he wanted to make something like Snow White because he was also an artist but again the willingness on his part to make such a big risk that resulted in something so impactful is his far more important contribution to animation than any actual cartoon he worked on as an animator or writer.

People told Walt directly, "Nobody in their right mind has the attention span to watch animation for an hour."

They werent wrong when for them animation was nothing but some black and white furries hitting each other with mallets or singing

At least in case of Disney comics and cartoon shorts Walt was AFAIK pretty hands-off and trusted the writers and artists he hired to not put his name in quality products. He was pretty good in recognizing talent even in unexpected places. Carl Barks - who ultimately invented Scrooge McDuck, Magica DeSpell, Gyro Gearloose and most of general Donald Duck/Duckburg lore - used to work odd jobs and as a part-time cartoonist and editor for softcore magazines until he got hired at Disney in his late 30s.

As soon as he got rich, he tried getting away from cartoons. He spend his time making live action movies, theme parks, educational videos and futuristic city development.

      >Tolkien sold the rights to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings to United Artists in the late 1960s. When producers discussed the idea of movie adaptations, Tolkien was once again adamant that Disney should not be involved. “It might be advisable,” he wrote in a letter, “to let the Americans do what seems good to them — as long as it was possible…to veto anything from or influenced by the Disney studios (for all whose works I have a heartfelt loathing).”
