i'd really rather just have a new port of the original with better netcode than the xbox port. 2 probably wouldn't be as fun both gameplay wise and as far as the roster goes.
The game already has most of the classic sonic characters of that era. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Nack/Fang, Bark, Bean, Metal Sonic, Eggman. Only ones left would be Mighty, Ray and the rest of the Chaotixs.
As for Modern Sonic I would want it to have the same cast as Sonic Battle with some of the newer ones like Heroes Team Chaotix, Metal Sonic, Neo Metal Sonic, Tikal and Chaos as a duo, Omega, Cream and Cheese and with Infinite as the final boss. The plot could be he trapped everyone in an illusion.

I wish the dev(s) for this got their shit sorted. No idea what the state of the game is anymore, as they've flip flopped between whether the Definitive or Ultimate version is the one available, they killed their own account that was used just for Sonic Smackdown news, and last I checked, the main dev disengaged himself from places like the Sonic Smackdown chat server.
I can understand that they might instead want to focus on the new shit they're making, but the lack of any communication and news is beyond frustrating.
I'd play the PS360 port on PC with good online, let alone a new one, granted a new one would be more likely with modern designs/characters. All the fangame fighting games are 2D so The Fighters would still have a niche.

Also, I don't like them personally, but a Sonic fighting game is also screaming for a tag/assist system. If that could be included in a unique way that doesn't feel tacked on and entirely separate from your moveset, I think it'd fit really well

Honestly a multiplayer fighting game is the only place where most of the comic cast could really work in the games, there's no way you could make characters like Kit, Mimic, or Starline work as playables in an actual Sonic game.

I was thinking something similar to Ginyu in FighterZ, where Witchcart summons her lackies during certain specials. Her base moveset is based around using magic and riding a minecart though, so probably some kind of mix of rushdown and zoner.
sounds fun. I thought of a moveset for a heavy and bomb duo where their gimmick would be the tether rings like you could position heavy somewhere and essentially use it as a way to launch bomb around into the opponent or vice versa
