Now, more than ever, no. Not even getting into the whole political bullshit, the game is on its way to being wow 2.0 and retreading the same steps RS3 did. The unironically want to implement gear augments i.e. enchantments which will warp everything combat related around it and an extra thing to micromanage when you go from content to content. On top of that the devs themselves are extremely fricking scummy and have been for years - they clearly see the polling system as something that gets in the way of what they want to do and operate as such. There's still shit that have passed polling that they still haven't implemented in over a year. They keep wasting resources into PKing while not addressing the people why PKing is so dogshit because they're terrified of pissing of their content creators. Inept company

      It's not very "oldschool" anymore.

Bro it's been RS3lite for like 3+ years now and only getting worse. I was there back then. I actually kinda liked some of the pre-EOC changes bigger number make brain happy-happy. Having my account forcibly follow RS into EOC was heartbreaking because the skill system is so fricking dumb and bad especially because of RS's gauranteed lag issue.
I tried going back years ago and I kept running into "new" content that just made me resent OSRS for not being OSRS. I watch OSRS micro e-celebs and man it makes me whinge every time new shit is added.

Jagex had lightning in a bottle and no idea what it was. Every day the corpse gets a little more hollow.

Seen a concerningly large number of OSRS players announcing themselves on RS3 ironmen.
The only person I've seen go from RS3 to OSRS became a literal troony.

its mindboggling how much time and effort gets wasted into the wilderness, nerfing items for pvp, and introducing new items for pvp. then content creators still cry about a lack of pvp updates

the only pvp update i want is a classic lms mode. dscim/msb to dds. no protection prayers. no combo foods. thats how people played back in the day, thats what i want to do now

If you play Ironman and treat it like a singleplayer idle cookie clicker game it can be a moderately fun diversion.
But the glory days of '07 are over, if you're looking to have a fun time interacting with the community and play it like a proper MMO you're going to be disappointed. You're not a kid anymore, and neither are anyone else playing this game, it's composed entirely of jaded adults in their 30s who are doing their own thing, and bots.

Reading about Albion Online, it sounds like it has MOBA-like combat with an emphasis on crafting and PVP.

Off topic but I try not to pollute Fortune Vee too much, tangentially related.

As an adult in his mid 30s who works full time, are there any MMOs for me? I never really had any interest in the genre, I always heard stories of people camping spawns for 18 hours and bosses that take 2 hours to kill back in the Everquest days, and it sounded more like a pain in the ass than fun. But the "shared, evolving world" concept, sounds very interesting.

      >I always heard stories of people camping spawns for 18 hours and bosses that take 2 hours to kill back in the Everquest days, and it sounded more like a pain in the ass than fun
this gay shit stopped long ago in any successful MMO. A few moronic neets and boomers will jerk it off because they could replace skill with free time to burn and feel good about themselves but its dead
      >shared, evolving world
dont go in expecting something amazing. MMO worlds are very non-responsive, players can scarcely make a unique impact in the world, any "evolution" is pre planned by the devs and usually only reflects a tiny part of the game
A tiny number of games really let players go wild but usually these just get fricked to hell and back by players griefing or metagaming the world

        >players can scarcely make a unique impact in the world

I thought like economies could crash and that modeling has been used by real economists etc(read this somewhere, EVE and Star Wars Galaxies i think)? If your game doesn't have crafters no weapons? Or am I real off base here?

Like I said it all just sounded so stressful but it kind of sounds chaotically appealing now.

          Anonymous

Those are the exception to the rule. EVE is very hard on the player driven content side of things, which means it's a very collaborative game more often than not. The problem is that since it's so freeform and expecting collaboration, the community has essentially turned a lot of the game into a job where you're on call 24/7. Fricktons of grinding, often with little payoff in satisfaction in the end with a few big events at best. There's a ton of risk in doing anything combatitive, so most of your time will be grinding whatever you specialize in for money to fund your guild for the occasional skirmish/war. Way too much politics.

Other more traditional MMOs operate on a more skinner box system, where you grind sections of the game for shiny baubles and general mastery. Depending on the game, the shiny baubles might be easy or hard to get, have time gates, or other stupid shit in the way for more "Pride and Accomplishment" and depending which one you get, those accomplishments might be useful 2 years down the line (osrs) or completely worthless at the next expansion (WoW).

Yeah, every MMO is a long grind of some flavor, and some respect your grind more than others. I like osrs because it at least rewards achievements by letting them persist as achievements for a long time instead of just a cosmetic emblem after the next expansion drops. It's also practically a single player game with the option of multiplayer interaction for most content. It's as intense or chill as you want it to be.

          >I thought like economies could crash and that modeling has been used by real economists etc(read this somewhere, EVE and Star Wars Galaxies i think)?
thats probably true but the most famous "real world case study" in any mmo was world of warcraft's corrupted blood plague

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corrupted_Blood_incident

          >World of Warcraft introduced the game region of Zul'Gurub on September 13. The boss of the region, Hakkar the Soulflayer, cast Corrupted Blood on raid participants; the debuff's effects expired when players defeated Hakkar. Corrupted Blood soon spread beyond Zul'Gurub as players reacted to the infection with panic, either fast traveling to heavily-populated game regions or deactivating their animal companions. When those companions were reactivated, they still carried the debuff, becoming disease vectors, while non-player characters became asymptomatic carriers. Player reactions to the Corrupted Blood pandemic varied: some provided aid by healing players or warning them of outbreak zones, while griefers intentionally contracted the debuff to spread it across World of Warcraft. After several failed hotfixes, Blizzard ended the pandemic by performing a hard reset, and a later patch prevented companions from contracting Corrupted Blood entirely.

          >Although it was the result of a software bug, the Corrupted Blood incident gained attention from World of Warcraft players and disease researchers. Blizzard developed intentional in-game pandemics in two expansion sets: Wrath of the Lich King in 2008 and Shadowlands in 2020. Epidemiologists, meanwhile, took interest in how MMORPGs, unlike mathematical models, could capture individual human responses to disease outbreaks rather than generating assumptions about behavior.

            Anonymous

That was all an overhyped pile of malarkey. The dot only lasted literal seconds before expiring. There was no 'big, widespread plague', just a bunch of brief bursts whenever someone decided to store the dot in their pet and let it out in a populated area.

I didn't think so at first, but listening to their Q&A thing where they talk about actually updating the engine to not only make sailing have better movement and water physics but to actually allow you to see the mainland in a meaningful way (like player's fishing) sounds fricking kino.

Same, when I think about the 3 new skills I basically went: "when I was doing tutorial island in 2006, which one of these would I have expected to see on the skill tab?".
Sailing hands down feels the most natural to the game, shamanism feels like it has all the same issues as warding.

Started playing a year ago (started on april 1st) and have pic related hours in the game, so from the perspective of a newish player I really enjoy it since it's mostly a make your own fun game. you can tackle pretty much anything in the game the way you want, but it is a grind in some aspects, so bear that in mind. I also enjoy it since it replaced my all my cookie clicker games, and has tonnes of options to do questing, raids, mini games, etc. I tried to get into it since it released as OSRS and made a few accounts and left them, but a friend convinced me to try it again and I have been having a lot of fun since. f2p is trash so if you want to actually experience the game I would recommend getting a membership for a month and seriously give it a try (you can also buy your membership with in game gold once your account can do good money making methods or selling mats/items from boss drops). Set your own goals and experience the game how you want to, don't let people decide how you should play or min max and have fun. I only used the wiki/plugins for the big quests cause sometimes they have specific things or good gear you need to complete them, so dont worry about it getting to WoW addons levels or PoE wiki everything to understand the game. You can do that if you want to, but it's really not needed. Also dont listen to people who say there is no community, they play with entity hiders on and public chat off and are scared of interacting with anyone outside their clan.

Its like if OSRS was Diablo 2 and it kept getting constant updates, every update was a decent addition to the game and has a long lifespan where rs3/runescape is Diablo 3, everything is scaled into the trillions, you can gamble for items without fighting things and gets boring quickly.

Last time I played, I joined a guild where a lot of people were maxxed out and actually hated Jagex to add more content because they didnt want to play anymore. I don't know if they were just particular autists or that had to do with the quality of content.

Tons of stuff to do, no rush to do any of it. Same with guild wars 2 but something about that game has never appealed to me. It’s cool that I can hop on for 20 minutes or whatever in between meetings or before bed and make meaningful progress towards something.

Might be hard to tell/see but I’m making a RuneScape like game with 2023 graphics. (He’s fishing right now. I can post more if you want)

Would you play it or have I wasted the last 2 years on it? It’s literally just RuneScape with 2023 graphics. Fully multiplayer so far. Even have play testers.

Personally I think the art style and shitty graphics are part of the charm of OSRS, but that's only because of nostalgia and wouldn't apply to everyone else. An updated Runescape that doesn't center around shitty tick manipulation and prayer flicking sounds pretty cool. If you added a little more depth to the combat without getting too crazy and had a nice world to explore it could turn out great.

  54. 1 year ago
    Anonymous

It's probably the worst time to get into OSRS unfortunately, and it's only getting gradually worse. Game is rampant with bots, tick manipulation is factored into making content now, absolute cancer community who only cares about efficiency, reddit runs the game, zero customer support, etc, etc.

    >Would you say Old school Runescape is worth getting into in 2023?
    Only as a group ironman/ironman
As a standard account some skills have no significance to your account, like thieving and runecrafting.
As a Ironman each skill leads to more content and you can't buy/merchant your way to the top.
I wish Jagex would fix collection logs so that it's only added if you get the item yourself instead of purchasing the item, sure pets fill in that niche since you can't buy them BUT it should have been a blanket policy on all collections.

Bros, my friends wanted me to join them on their group iron man, on a spare account that someone left alone. I tried it for a few weeks, but it felt strange because a lot of the basic stuff was already done, and I was told to not do certain things because that's not what they needed.
Made it seem really uninteresting to me. Should I instead start my own ironman if I wanted to try it out, or just go back to them?

      Anonymous

Frick that. I don't play games to be told what to do by another autist. That's the fastest way to suck all the fun out of any game. Do what you like. Tell them you're going to contribute your way, don't prostitute all the resources, but find a way to contribute in your own unique way. Also, if it's a spare account, don't get attached to it, someone else owns it and can take it away at any moment.
I'd personally make my own solo ironman, the temptation to take their work and skip the early grind is too strong.

No, you’re about seven years too late. OSRS is irreversably pozzed now, it’s over and there will never be a real community ever again. It is neither the game we grew up with in the 2000s nor the hilariously endearing shitfest it was after its revival in the 2010s, it’s purely irredeemable fricking dogshit and Jagex can kiss my ass for ruining this game time and time again.

Actually I play HC iron (rank ~4000), it feels good not being a failure.

The only fun thing non-irons really get is easy-setup team pvm. Group iron sucks, it's fricking clunky and I've never seen a team of group ironmen actually doing anything together.
OSRS is decent as an economy simulator and decent as a rewarding group pvm thing, but most of the bosses are solo instances and GWD can be done solo, people in my HC clan do it but I'm not there yet.

        >f there was no GE then ironman would be pretty pointless, with the old trading system it felt like everyone was an ironman/scavenger.
im sorry what? most of the skills would still be buyable. you would still have massive amounts of p ess, dhide, raw fish, logs, flax, and ores/bars, and boss uniques being easily tradable in w2. the single biggest difference between pre ge and post ge would be people high alching/selling their garbage slayer loot to general stores instead of the ge. 99% of items are hardlocked at their vendor/high alch price

am i the only one who remembered merch bots? i used to try to lure them to dark wizards. they would buy/sell whatever common item at set prices and would automatically list the correct amount of items/gp based on what you offered in the trade screen. without the ge these bots would only be more rampant, especially once you factor in insane runelite plugins that werent available back then
