There were 3 tiers of mmo for different ages, young kids like 8-9 were on club penguin, runescape for 10-14, then you moved to world of warcraft. Its just a time that has passed now, most of the takes about how to fix wow are shit, we always had wikis and youtube guides for everything and if anything people today are less resourceful and don’t even google for themselves anymore not to mention search engines keep getting worse and worse.
10-14 was like the majority of WoW players, so many people at my age in school back then played WoW, even the biggest normalgays.
I think only Runescape might have been more common to play.
I remember the youngest people being like 14 but I am basing this on people I voice chatted with, I would say there was an equal amount of 14-18 year olds and college aged people and some older people.
discord isn't solely to blame for the shift away from socializing in video games. that falls more on the games companies cracking down on "no no language" and their automated banning systems running completely rampant with little to no human mediation or control behind said systems. just an underpaid third worlder shrugging at his computer every time a ticket for an unjust ban pops up on his screen.

WoW is the only MMO that has traditional fantasy classes matched with traditional races with enough variety to make each character different.
Sure, I can fire up an Orc Warrior in any other MMO and be fine, but where's the Goblins? What about Minotaurs? Where the frick is my Undead race? WHERE'S THE FRICKING DWARVES!?
Combat in WoW is also totally different from any other MMO. The RNG procs on some classes make playing them feel like a slot machine. The rotations of solid builder/spender classes feels good.
Hell, Fury Warrior is literally two buttons and somehow still feels good to play.
Add in the fact that it's been around for a frick-long time, and you get why WoW is so big.

I actually do think what's happening right now is Blizzard trying to figure out what the frick to do with the game because they realize retail is never going to get new players ever again and Classic is done with for most people.
BfA and Shadowlands did irreparable damage to the game's identity and Dragonflight is just considered so-so by the playerbase. It really didn't bring many people back, and there's a lot of talk that The War Within will be more of the same.
Most people consider Vanilla to Wrath to be the "classic era" and that it ended with Cata, and that Cata was the game's first bad expansion. Besides that, Classic has just kind of run its course. People played through WotLK, finished it, and moved on, and the people that are left are the sweaty minmax raider people, raidlogging to once again roflstomp a mind-numbingly easy raid from 15 years ago.
Maybe some curious people who never got to play Cata will try it, but a lot of people know what they're in for and won't bother.
So Blizzard is trying all this wacky shit to try and stir up interest in the game. That's what Plunderstorm was for. That's what SoD was for. That's what MoP Remix will be for. And you can bet there's more garbage like this on the way as they throw shit at the wall trying to make something stick.
But why? Firelands was literally half a raid tier. They never shipped the water raid that was supposed to go with it. 6/7 of those bosses will just fall over and Heroic Rag is a massive difficulty spike out of nowhere.
One of the patches of Cataclysm is just them ripping ZA and ZG out of the game and repackaging them as shitty five mans. An entire patch.
Cata got done dirty by homosexuals basically I refuse to blame blizzard for struggling to respond to screaming babies. I quit during Cataclysm and I feel genuinely sorry for the suckers that stayed. There is a crowd of people that will never quit the game no matter what Blizzard does and they are basically the fiendish meth junkies of the gaming world.

in the history of world of warcraft pvp has never been good or fun. it has always been a minigame and the developers have always hated dealing with it. that some people enjoy it regardless is not proof that it's contrarian to say it's never been good or fun, it's just that there's a certain segment of the population that likes things that are bad and in this case it's worth $15 a month to them

You could strip away their prestige, make it impossible to get a real match, and it'd all look great to the suits because the mountsmogscheevos guys would be queueing up 24/7 for months to get 35 seasons' worth of collectables. By the time things settled down, the people who actually liked PVP would be gone and no one would ever have to worry about balancing it again.
They don't do that, so the only thing that makes sense is that there are devs that like PVP.

I actually do think what's happening right now is Blizzard trying to figure out what the frick to do with the game because they realize retail is never going to get new players ever again and Classic is done with for most people.
BfA and Shadowlands did irreparable damage to the game's identity and Dragonflight is just considered so-so by the playerbase. It really didn't bring many people back, and there's a lot of talk that The War Within will be more of the same.
Most people consider Vanilla to Wrath to be the "classic era" and that it ended with Cata, and that Cata was the game's first bad expansion. Besides that, Classic has just kind of run its course. People played through WotLK, finished it, and moved on, and the people that are left are the sweaty minmax raider people, raidlogging to once again roflstomp a mind-numbingly easy raid from 15 years ago.
Maybe some curious people who never got to play Cata will try it, but a lot of people know what they're in for and won't bother.
So Blizzard is trying all this wacky shit to try and stir up interest in the game. That's what Plunderstorm was for. That's what SoD was for. That's what MoP Remix will be for. And you can bet there's more garbage like this on the way as they throw shit at the wall trying to make something stick.

I would play even base classic if it had more people in it and more relaxed pace. Timing between Ahn'qiraj and Naxxramas was really fast. I am not a 100% casual, but I don't to waste 40 hours a week to clear raid 20 minutes faster.

Unless you're playing a Vanilla private server it's not remotely worth checking out.

Being the most subscribed MMO nowadays is not a huge feat as most of them went f2p decade ago. Plus we don't have numbers to prove that population numbers in WoW are healthy and growing and those are not just dejected boomer cultists swinging back and forth unable to let go of their childhood addiction.
WoW's subscription is pretty good value these days, at least compared to what it was 10 years ago. I already quit this expansion last summer, but I might test out the new MoP mode and last phase of SoD whenever it's out.
